Maryland State Refund Processing Status - Anyone Received Theirs Yet?

I'm tracking the processing metrics for my Maryland state refund and noticing potential anomalies in the disbursement timeline. Has anyone in the Baltimore metropolitan area received their MD state refund for tax year 2023 yet? I'm attempting to establish a baseline for normal processing parameters. My federal return has already completed processing (cycle code 20241105), but the Maryland Comptroller's system still shows my state return as "being processed" after 24 days. I've verified all submission protocols were followed correctly during e-filing. My spouse and I filed jointly for the first time, so I'm concerned this may have triggered additional verification procedures.

OMG same boat here! MD refunds are taking FOREVER this yr. Filed 2/15, fed came 2/29, but MD still says "processing" w/ no ETA. Called comptroller's ofc yesterday & they said there's a HUGE backlog bc of extra fraud checks. Rep told me they're prioritizing by filing date, but some Feb filers still waiting. Check ur status here: https://interactive.marylandtaxes.gov/INDIV/refundstatus/home.aspx & if it says "being processed" just gotta wait. If it's been >8 wks, def call them ASAP!

Thank you for this information! I was starting to think there might be something wrong with my return, but it seems this is possibly just normal for this year. I've been checking that status page almost daily, and it's been showing "being processed" for what feels like forever.

I've been waiting since JANUARY 31st! Called three times and got three different answers. First they said 4-6 weeks, then 6-8 weeks, then "we can't provide a timeframe." How is it possible they're this backed up every single year? Don't they learn anything from previous tax seasons?

Wow, thanks for sharing that link! I've been looking all over the MD Comptroller's website but somehow missed the direct refund status checker. This is way more helpful than what I found before.

The extended processing times are definitely related to enhanced security protocols. I'm seeing this across multiple states this year, not just Maryland: โ€ข Increased identity verification steps โ€ข More manual reviews of returns with certain deductions โ€ข Higher fraud detection thresholds โ€ข System upgrades that temporarily slowed processing

I filed Feb 1st and JUST got my MD refund yesterday! Almost 8 weeks of waiting while my federal came in like 10 days ๐Ÿ˜‚ The funny thing is the Where's My Refund tool still says "processing" even though the money is already in my account. Classic Maryland efficiency! Maybe check your bank account directly? Their system seems to be lagging behind the actual deposits.

I had the exact same experience last year. The money showed up in my account a full week before the tracker updated. I've been checking my bank account every morning at 9am when deposits typically post. Still nothing as of today, but I'm hopeful after seeing your timeline.

OMG THANK YOU for posting this! I've been so stressed watching my bank account dwindle while waiting for this refund! Knowing someone who filed early February finally got theirs gives me hope mine will come soon! ๐Ÿ˜ญ I've been checking the tracker daily but will start watching my account more closely now!

I'm in a similar situation regarding my Maryland state refund. According to Maryland Tax Code ยง10-911, the Comptroller is required to process refunds within 45 days of filing or pay interest on delayed amounts. I'm currently at day 37 of waiting, with the Maryland tax portal still showing status as "being processed." The anxiety is building as I approach that 45-day threshold. My federal refund was processed within standard IRS timeframes (21 days), but Maryland seems significantly delayed compared to previous years.

I actually hit the 45-day mark last week and called to ask about the interest. The representative told me they're only required to pay interest if the delay is their fault, not if they're conducting "routine verification processes." Seems like a convenient loophole.

Are you certain about that 45-day requirement? I thought it was 60 days for electronically filed returns and 90 days for paper returns in Maryland. Can you clarify where you found the 45-day timeframe?

This happened to me last year. Hit day 52 before I got my refund, and they did add interest automatically - wasn't much (like $3.42 on a $1200 refund), but at least they honored it without me having to ask.

I work with tax clients in Maryland and have been tracking this issue closely. Here's what I'm seeing: 1. Maryland is indeed experiencing significant processing delays this year 2. Most of my clients who filed in January are just now receiving their refunds 3. February filers are still largely waiting 4. The Comptroller's office is severely understaffed for phone support If you need to speak with someone at the Comptroller's office, I've had several clients use Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through. It's particularly helpful since Maryland's tax department phone lines are almost impossible to get through on directly. One client waited 3+ hours on hold before using Claimyr and got connected within 15 minutes. They were able to confirm there were no issues with their return - just standard processing delays.

I waited exactly 63 days for my Maryland refund last year after filing on February 8th, 2023. This year I filed on January 29th, 2024, and still nothing as of today (April 2nd). Called the Comptroller's office on March 15th and they said there was a "verification hold" but couldn't tell me why or when it would be resolved. Called again on March 29th and was told they have no additional information. The representative mentioned they're seeing unprecedented volumes this year and many returns are being manually reviewed. Be prepared for a long wait.

Thanks for sharing your timeline. That helps set realistic expectations for those of us still waiting.

I appreciate you mentioning the "verification hold" possibility. I'll ask specifically about that when I call them tomorrow.

Did they mention anything about what triggers these verification holds? I'm wondering if certain deductions or credits are more likely to cause them.

This is really helpful context, thank you! I was starting to worry something was wrong with my return.

I believe the Maryland Comptroller's office might be prioritizing processing based on several factors, not just filing date. From what I've gathered, they may be expediting smaller refunds while subjecting larger refunds to additional scrutiny. There also appears to be some correlation between claiming certain credits (particularly the Earned Income Tax Credit) and longer processing times. It might be worth noting that the Comptroller's website has a notice about "increased identity theft protection measures" which could potentially explain some of the delays we're experiencing this year.

Do you know if first-time joint filers like the OP mentioned are more likely to get flagged for review? My wife and I also filed jointly for the first time this year and we're still waiting.

This makes a lot of sense! My refund is relatively small this year (~$500) and I got it within 3 weeks, while my brother is waiting on a much larger amount and has been waiting for over 2 months now.

Have you heard anything about address changes causing delays? I moved last year and wonder if that's contributing to my long wait time.
