Maryland Refunds 2024 - Have They Started Processing Yet?
Hey everyone, I'm kinda wondering if Maryland has actually started sending out tax refunds yet? It seems like things might be moving a bit slower than usual this year, but maybe that's just my impression? I've filed pretty early the last few years and usually have my state refund by now. I'm in Baltimore and could really use that money soon for some unexpected car repairs. Anyone else from MD notice anything different about the refund timeline this year?

Maryland has indeed started processing refunds, but aren't they experiencing significant delays this year? The Comptroller's office announced they're implementing enhanced fraud detection measures for 2024, which has slowed down the typical timeline. Have you checked your refund status through the state's website? Many Baltimore residents are seeing longer processing times, especially those who filed electronically after February 15th. When did you submit yours?

Are we sure this is just about fraud detection? I heard they're understaffed this year too.

This is reminding me a lot of what happened in 2022 when they upgraded their systems. I waited almost 9 weeks for my Maryland refund while my federal came in just 10 days. The weird thing was that when I finally got my MD refund, there was no explanation for the delay - it just suddenly appeared in my account one day. I'm seeing the same pattern this year with my colleagues who've already filed.

Tbh the fraud detection thing is legit. My neighbor works for the comptroller's office and says they're catching way more fraudulent returns this yr. They had to slow things down bc scammers were getting too good at gaming the system. Sucks for those of us waiting but better than letting criminals get paid I guess?

I've been tracking this issue closely and Maryland's Comptroller's Office is definitely processing refunds, but with significant verification delays. I filed on January 31st and my refund was finally initiated on March 18th - a full 47 days later. While waiting, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript data from both IRS and Maryland. The platform clearly showed my Maryland return was stuck in the verification queue based on the status codes. It also predicted my refund date within 2 days of when it actually arrived. If you want to understand exactly where your refund is in the process and get a realistic timeline, I'd highly recommend checking it out.

I've seen people mention taxr.ai before - does it actually work with state returns too? I thought it was just for federal IRS stuff. Does it cost anything to use?

Thanks for sharing. Used it last week. Worked great.

I'm a little nervous about sharing my tax info with another service... how exactly does it work? Do you have to upload your actual returns or just the transcript codes?

Maryland resident here. The state is definitely processing refunds but there are delays this year: • Processing started January 29th for e-filed returns • Paper returns are taking 30-45 days minimum • Direct deposits are prioritized over paper checks • Returns with certain credits are getting additional review I filed February 3rd and just got my refund last week. The Comptroller's website says to allow up to 45 days before contacting them about your refund status.

Maryland's refund process is moving slower than a turtle with a sprained ankle this year! I waited 6 weeks with zero updates on my refund status, and the state's automated system was absolutely useless. Finally decided to try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to a human at the Comptroller's office. Got connected in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent confirmed my return was just sitting in a verification queue and they processed it while I was on the phone. Got my direct deposit 3 days later. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things moving!

Wait, there's a service that can get you through to tax agencies? How have I never heard of this before? Does it actually work consistently or did you just get lucky?

I used Claimyr last year for the IRS and it worked then too. Called the MD Comptroller myself this year and spent 2 hours on hold before getting disconnected. Tried again the next day - same result. Wish I'd remembered this service existed for state tax departments too. Would have saved me hours of frustration.

Is anyone else concerned about these delays? I filed on February 12th, 2024 and still nothing. The Maryland website just says "processing" with no other details. Last year I filed on February 15th, 2023 and had my refund by March 1st. Something seems off this year...

According to Maryland Tax-General Code § 13-905, the Comptroller is required to process refunds within 45 days of the filing deadline (or within 90 days for paper returns) to avoid paying interest. This is why they're being extremely cautious this year with their new fraud detection system. The official guidance from the Comptroller's office on March 1st stated that all returns filed before February 15th should be processed by April 1st, and returns filed after that date will be processed in the order received. If you haven't received your refund by the 45-day mark, you should contact them immediately as you may be entitled to interest payments!

This is super helpful information, thank you! I didn't realize there was actually a legal timeframe they have to follow.

I think I might have some insight into what's happening... The Maryland Comptroller's office appears to be processing returns in batches this year rather than continuously. My return was in limbo for weeks, then suddenly processed along with several of my colleagues who all filed around the same time. From what I've gathered from various sources, they're doing large batch processing on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with direct deposits typically hitting accounts 2-3 business days after processing. If you check your status and see no movement for weeks, don't panic - it might just be waiting for the next batch processing day.

Have you tried using the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system? Call 410-260-7701 from the phone number you listed on your tax return. The automated system can give you status updates that sometimes aren't reflected on the website yet. Another option is to verify your mailing address is correct - I've seen cases where refunds were delayed because the system flagged address mismatches between current and previous year returns. The Maryland Taxpayer Service Division can also manually check your refund status if you've waited more than 30 days.
