Maryland State Tax Refund Delays 2024 - Anyone Else Still Waiting?
Filed my Maryland taxes early February and still nothing. The where's my refund tool just says processing. Called multiple times but keep getting the run around about verification delays. Anyone else stuck in this Maryland refund limbo? Starting to feel like I'm never gonna see this money.

Maryland tax specialist here - there's currently a massive backlog due to increased fraud prevention measures. Most returns are taking 8-12 weeks minimum. If you've waited longer than 12 weeks, request a taxpayer advocate through the comptroller's office. They're prioritizing returns with EITC claims and those filed before March 1st.

•8-12 weeks?! This is absolutely ridiculous. Its our money not theirs 🤬

•I know its frustrating, but the verification process is crucial to prevent fraud. Last year MD stopped over $100m in fraudulent returns.

Hey guys, instead of playing the waiting game, I started using taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. For $1 it literally told me exactly why my refund was delayed and when to expect it. Saved me hours of guesswork and anxiety. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

•Fr? Does it actually work or is this just another scam?

•100% legit. It analyzes your entire transcript and breaks everything down. Shows all verification flags, processing stages, everything. Best dollar I ever spent 💯

Same boat here - filed Feb 3rd and still waiting. Called the Maryland comptroller's office last week and they said there's a huge backlog from the new identity verification system they implemented. The rep told me to expect another 4-6 weeks minimum. Really frustrating when you're counting on that money for bills. At least we're not alone in this mess!

•Ugh same timeline here! Filed Feb 5th and nothing. That identity verification system sounds like a nightmare - wish they would have tested it better before rolling it out. Really hope we don't have to wait another month+ 😤 At least the rep gave you some kind of timeline, every time I call they just say "processing" with no ETA

Filed Feb 12th and just got my refund yesterday! Took about 10 weeks total. I know everyone's situation is different but wanted to give some hope to those still waiting. The "where's my refund" tool updated to "approved" about 3 days before the money hit my account. Hang in there everyone - they're definitely processing them, just painfully slow this year.

•That's so encouraging to hear! 10 weeks is still crazy long but at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. I'm at about 8 weeks now so hopefully mine will update soon too. Did you have to do anything special or did it just randomly process? And was your return pretty straightforward or did you have any complications that might have caused delays?

•@Andre Laurent That s'great news! I m'at week 9 right now so fingers crossed mine processes soon. Did you notice any specific codes or flags on your transcript before it got approved? I ve'been trying to track the processing stages but Maryland s'system is so confusing compared to federal returns.

Filed February 8th here and still stuck in processing hell too! It's so frustrating because I really need that refund for some unexpected medical bills. The Maryland comptroller's website is absolutely useless - just keeps saying the same generic "your return is being processed" message with no timeline. I've called three times and gotten three different estimates ranging from "a few more weeks" to "could be 16 weeks total." How is there no better tracking system in 2024? At this point I'm just checking my bank account every morning hoping for a miracle 😭

•I feel your pain! Filed Feb 10th and in the exact same situation - really needed that money for car repairs and now I'm stuck with credit card debt instead. The lack of transparency is what gets me the most. Like you said, how is there no proper tracking system in 2024? Even pizza delivery apps give you better updates than Maryland's tax department! I've given up calling since they just give different answers every time. Just hoping it shows up soon before I have to start paying interest on these bills 😤

Filed Feb 14th and just hit the 11 week mark with absolutely no updates. This is beyond ridiculous at this point - I've been checking the "where's my refund" tool daily and it hasn't changed from "processing" since March. Called again yesterday and they couldn't even tell me if my return was flagged for anything specific or just caught in the general backlog. Really considering filing a complaint with the taxpayer advocate program that someone mentioned earlier. Has anyone had any luck with that route? At this point I'm wondering if some returns are just getting lost in the system completely.

•Definitely file with the taxpayer advocate program! I did that around week 10 and got my refund within 3 weeks after they took my case. They actually have more direct access to see what's happening with your return and can escalate it if needed. The regular customer service reps basically just read from the same script, but the advocates can dig deeper. You can request one through the comptroller's website or call their dedicated line. At 11 weeks you definitely qualify for their assistance - don't wait any longer!

Filed Feb 20th and still waiting here too! This whole situation is absolutely maddening - I've been relying on that refund to catch up on some overdue bills and it's causing so much stress. What really bugs me is that Maryland processed my federal return in like 2 weeks, but their state system is completely broken. I've started documenting every call I make with dates and what they tell me because the stories keep changing. One rep said it was due to "enhanced security measures" and another said it was just volume. At this point I'm wondering if we should start a group complaint or something because this is affecting way too many people!

•@Sofia Peña I m'so glad someone else is documenting their calls! I ve'been doing the same thing because the inconsistency is just unreal. Filed Feb 22nd and also still waiting - going on 10+ weeks now. The stress is really getting to me too, especially since I was counting on that money for my kids summer' camp registration deadlines. A group complaint sounds like a great idea honestly. Maybe we could start a shared document or something to track everyone s'timelines and what reps are telling us? At minimum it would help us see patterns and maybe give us more leverage when dealing with the comptroller s'office. This whole situation is completely unacceptable for 2024! 😤

Filed Feb 16th and just wanted to share my experience - I was also stuck in processing limbo for about 9 weeks with zero updates on the "where's my refund" tool. Finally got fed up and contacted the taxpayer advocate program like others mentioned here. Within 2 days of filing the request, an advocate called me back and explained that my return was flagged for identity verification (apparently happens randomly now). She was able to clear it immediately over the phone after I provided some basic info to confirm my identity. Got my refund direct deposited 5 days later! Don't wait as long as I did - if you're past 8 weeks definitely reach out to them. The regular customer service line is basically useless but the advocates actually have power to resolve issues.

•@Faith Kingston Thank you SO much for sharing this! I m'at week 10 now and was starting to lose hope. Filed Feb 9th and the where "s'my refund tool" has been completely useless - just says processing with no other info. I had no idea the taxpayer advocate program could actually clear identity verification issues over the phone like that. I ve'been dreading having to mail in documents and wait even longer. Definitely calling them first thing Monday morning! Did you have to provide anything specific when you initially contacted them, or just your basic return info?

Filed Feb 7th and just got my refund this morning after 11 weeks! For anyone still waiting, I wanted to share what finally worked for me. After reading all these comments about the taxpayer advocate program, I decided to give it a shot at week 9. The advocate discovered my return was stuck because of a minor discrepancy with my W-2 wages (off by like $15 due to a rounding error). She was able to override it within a few days and my refund processed immediately after that. The regular customer service reps never mentioned this specific issue - they just kept saying "processing." Definitely recommend the advocate route if you're past 8-10 weeks. Also keep checking your bank account even if the "where's my refund" tool doesn't update - mine never changed from "processing" until the money was already in my account!

•@Landon Flounder This gives me so much hope! I m'at week 9 right now filed (Feb 13th and) have been getting the runaround from regular customer service. It s'crazy how a tiny $15 discrepancy can hold up an entire refund for months! I never would have thought to check for something that small. Definitely calling the taxpayer advocate program tomorrow - seems like they re'the only ones who can actually see what s'really going on with these returns. Thanks for the tip about checking bank accounts too, I ll'stop obsessing over that useless tracking tool! 🙏
