Filed 1/31 Verified 2/18 - Still No Updates on Refund
Filed my taxes on January 31st and got verification they were accepted on February 18th. Still no updates whatsoever. My sister filed a week after me and already got her refund last Friday. My brother-in-law filed mid-February and got his yesterday. I'm usually pretty chill about these things, but I'm helping my mom with some medical expenses and could really use the money. Anyone else stuck in limbo like this? I've checked WMR daily and my transcripts twice a week with no movement at all.

This delay isn't necessarily cause for concern, but have you checked your transcript for any specific codes? Have you verified whether you claimed any credits that might trigger additional review? Did you file electronically or by paper? The timing is interesting because mid-February verification suggests your return may have been caught in one of the IRS processing batches that typically experience longer wait times.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Filed early February, and I'm still waiting while my coworkers who filed later already got their refunds. Your explanation about processing batches makes some sense, I guess.

I think I might be in one of those processing batches too... I filed on February 2nd and still nothing. Is there a way to know for certain if that's what's happening?

This actually happened to me last year! According to IRS Publication 5344, certain returns get selected for additional verification even without errors. Mine was held for 42 days exactly, then suddenly processed. The relief when it finally came through was incredible!

Have you tried calling the IRS yet? It's SO frustrating when others file after you and get their refunds first! I'd be losing my mind if I were helping with medical expenses too. Sometimes you just need to get a human on the phone to explain what's happening!

Calling is definitely the way to go. I had a similar issue and got it resolved with one phone call.

I tried calling when my refund was delayed last year. Spent three hours on hold before giving up. Then tried again the next day and waited two more hours. Finally got through on my third attempt. They told me there was a simple verification flag on my account that they cleared right away. Money came a week later.

The IRS phone system can be difficult to navigate. If you do call, make sure to have all your documentation ready - they'll ask for your filing status, SSN, and exact refund amount from your return.

I was in exactly the same situation last month. • Called the regular IRS number 15+ times • Never got through to anyone • Wasted hours on hold • Got increasingly frustrated Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes. They told me my return was flagged for a simple verification that wouldn't have been resolved automatically. Worth the fee to save literally days of my life on hold.

Couldn't you accomplish the same thing by just calling at the right time? In my experience, if you call right when they open or during off-peak hours, you can usually get through without paying a service.

How much does Claimyr cost? And do they actually guarantee you'll speak to someone?

Based on your timeline, I'd recommend checking your transcript specifically on April 12th. I've tracked patterns in IRS processing for years, and returns verified on February 18th that haven't updated by now often get processed in the mid-April batch. The current tax season has specific processing challenges due to staffing issues announced on January 24th, 2024.

Something seems off here. January filing should be processed by now. Even with delays. Even with credits. I'd be concerned. Have you checked for identity verification requirements? Those don't always show up clearly.

Do you think it could be related to the PATH Act? Some returns with certain credits get automatically held until mid-February, and then enter normal processing after that.

Everyone's saying something's wrong, but honestly, this is pretty normal this year. The IRS is moving at the speed of a sloth swimming through peanut butter! My cousin's return took 9 weeks with zero explanation, then suddenly appeared in his account one day. The system is just overwhelmed again.

I had almost the exact same timeline as you - filed January 29th, verified February 16th, and heard absolutely nothing for weeks. I was getting super anxious because I needed the money for my kid's braces. I finally broke down and called the IRS after 6 weeks of waiting. Turns out there was a tiny discrepancy between my W-2 and what my employer reported that triggered a manual review. The agent fixed it while I was on the phone, and I got my refund 8 days later.

Did they explain what specifically triggered the review? Was it an income amount or something else?

This is EXACTLY why calling is so important! Sometimes it's just sitting there waiting for someone to look at it!

Just a word of caution based on what happened to me last year. If you do call and they say they'll "fix it right away" or "release the refund," don't count on immediate results. The agent told me my refund would process within 48 hours, but it still took another 3 weeks. Their internal systems don't move as quickly as they sometimes suggest.
