In-Person Verification Process - What You Actually Need to Bring
After my divorce finalized 73 days ago, I needed to verify my identity in person with the IRS. I wanted to share the exact requirements since many people seem confused. The process took exactly 27 minutes from entry to exit. You need precisely 2 items: 1. Two forms of valid identification (I brought my driver's license and passport) 2. A complete copy of your tax return (all pages, not just the summary) I arrived at 9:15am and was seen by 9:42am. The verification itself took only 8 minutes. The agent compared my ID to my face, verified the information against my tax return, and entered 6 verification codes into their system. No need to wait for the letter if you're in a hurry - just bring these items and the process is straightforward. I documented each step in case anyone needs a clear roadmap.

This is probably helpful for some people, but I'm not entirely sure if this applies everywhere? When I went for verification last month, they seemed to have slightly different requirements depending on which office you visit. Did they possibly mention if these are nationwide standards or just for your specific location?

According to the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification-in-person), the standard requirements are two forms of ID nationwide, but some locations might have additional requirements. The site specifically mentions you need 'photo identification and another form of ID' plus a copy of the tax return in question.

As someone who works adjacent to tax preparation, I can confirm that while the base requirements (two forms of ID and tax return) are standard nationwide, some offices may have specific preferences for what secondary ID they accept. Military IDs, Social Security cards, and birth certificates are all generally accepted, but credit cards or utility bills might be questioned at certain locations.

Did they check everything on your tax return or just certain pages? I have an appointment tomorrow morning and wondering if I need to bring the whole 32-page return with all schedules or just the main forms? • Need to know ASAP • Already printed main forms • Trying to avoid reprinting everything

Went thru this last yr. They def checked my whole return (all 18 pgs). Guy was super thorough, flipped thru every pg, even tho most were just worksheets. Better safe than sorry IMO. Took like 45 mins total w/ waiting. Brought DL + passport + SS card just 2 be extra safe.

Did you have to make an appointment in advance, or were you able to walk in? I'm thinking about going this route, but I'm not sure if I should call ahead first or if that would just delay things further.

I wonder if the wait times vary by location too? Like, would a smaller office in a rural area be faster than one in a major city? My nearest office is about 45 minutes away, but there's another one about an hour and 15 minutes away that might be less busy.

Appointments are required now. Changed after COVID. No walk-ins accepted. Call the appointment line. Schedule at least 2-3 weeks out. Busy season means longer waits. Check IRS.gov for your local office.

I tried to do this on March 2nd, 2024 and was turned away because I didn't have an appointment. The security guard said they're booking about 3 weeks out right now. Has anyone had luck with cancellations opening up sooner?

I've been through this process twice before - once in 2019 and again in 2023. The requirements have been consistent both times. You definitely need an appointment these days. I scheduled mine 14 days in advance through the IRS appointment line (844-545-5640). They're very strict about the two forms of ID - one MUST be government-issued with a photo. The second can be a credit card, utility bill, or another government document. When I went on February 8th, I counted 17 people in the waiting area, but the process itself was efficient once I got to the desk.

Did they require original documents or would high-quality copies work? My passport is currently with the embassy for a visa application, but I have scanned copies of everything.

Just completed this last week! OP is spot on. Took me 32 minutes total, but that's because I had a complicated return with multiple schedules. The agent was super professional and didn't ask any questions about my actual tax situation - just verified my identity against the documents. Such a relief after stressing about it for days!

This in-person verification feels like trying to board a plane with no boarding pass - stressful and confusing! I had my appointment last week, but the line was like a DMV on the last day of the month. Waited almost 2 hours despite having an appointment! If you're struggling to even get through to make an appointment, I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to connect with the IRS appointment line. It's like having a fast-pass at an amusement park - got through in about 15 minutes instead of the constant busy signals I was getting before. The appointment itself was exactly as OP described though - they just need to see your ID and tax return.

Is this service actually worth it? I've been calling the IRS for 3 days straight and can't get through, but I'm hesitant to pay for something when I should be able to reach a government agency for free.

I was skeptical too, but Claimyr just helps you get through the phone system. They don't talk to the IRS for you or anything. You still handle the actual conversation yourself. It just saves you from the endless redial game during busy season.

I used it last month after trying for literally a week to get through. Called over 40 times with no luck. With Claimyr I got through in about 12 minutes. Appointment was scheduled for the following week. Worth every penny during tax season when everyone is trying to call at once.

Just adding another positive experience - I used it yesterday after my mom spent three days trying to get through. Connected in about 20 minutes, and we got her appointment scheduled. The IRS really needs to improve their phone system, but until they do, this was a good workaround.

Did they actually check all the information on your tax return? I'm bringing mine tomorrow and wondering if I need to have explanations ready for some of the deductions I claimed. Also, did they ask why you needed to verify in person rather than waiting for the letter? My situation is a bit complicated because I moved twice this year and I'm worried about explaining that properly.

There are a few additional things people should know about this process that might help: 1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time 2. Some locations have metal detectors and security screening 3. Cell phones may not be allowed past security in certain offices 4. If you're bringing dependents, you'll need their ID documentation too 5. The verification is separate from any tax issues - they won't discuss your actual return contents 6. If you filed jointly, only one spouse needs to complete verification I'm slightly worried that different offices might interpret the requirements differently, but these seem to be the standard procedures across most locations I've heard about.

The Identity Verification process (IdVer) is distinct from a standard Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment. IdVer appointments specifically address potential identity theft concerns, while TAC appointments handle broader issues. The two forms of identification must meet the Acceptable Documentation standards outlined in Publication 1586, with one being a primary photo ID (passport, driver's license, or state ID) and the secondary ID potentially including birth certificate, Social Security card, or voter registration card. Military IDs are accepted as primary identification across all locations.
