IRS rep said my refund could take 9 weeks to get a DDD - anyone else wait this long?

Just got off the phone with an IRS representative about my refund status. I filed my return back in mid-March and it's now early June with nothing showing except "still being processed" when I check Where's My Refund. The rep told me it could take up to 9 weeks before I even receive a deposit date! This seems crazy long to me. Has anyone else been told they needed to wait that long just to get a date for their refund? I really need this money soon and was counting on it for some bills coming up.

Unfortunately, what the representative told you is accurate. The IRS is experiencing significant processing delays this year. The 9-week timeframe is actually pretty standard now for returns that require additional review or verification. The "still being processed" message usually indicates one of several things: 1. Identity verification may be needed 2. They're reviewing information on your return 3. Your return got flagged for potential fraud protection 4. There might be a math error or missing information You can try checking your tax transcript online which sometimes gives more detailed information than the Where's My Refund tool. It might show pending actions or specific codes that explain the delay. If you absolutely need the money urgently, you might want to contact your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They sometimes can help expedite processing in hardship situations.

Thanks for the info. I tried looking at my transcript but honestly I couldn't make sense of all the codes. Is there a guide somewhere for what they all mean?

0 coins

Yes, the IRS has a page that explains the transcript codes, but frankly it's not very user-friendly. Try taxr.ai - it can translate those transcript codes into plain English and tell you exactly what's happening with your return.

Just checked out taxr.ai and WOW what a difference! I can actually understand my transcript now. Turns out they're verifying some income I reported. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hey, I had a similar issue and was totally lost trying to understand what was happening with my refund. I tried using taxr.ai and it was insanely helpful! The tool actually reads your transcript and explains everything in normal human language. It showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and what to expect next. Seriously saved me hours of stress and confusion trying to decode all those weird IRS codes. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does way more than just read the transcript! It analyzes all the codes and tells you exactly what they mean, when you can expect your refund, if there are any issues, and what steps you need to take. It even helped me figure out I had a math error that was holding up my return. Absolute game changer!

OMG I just tried it and it's AMAZING! I've been pulling my hair out for weeks trying to figure out why my refund was delayed. The tool showed me exactly what was happening and when I could expect my money. Everyone dealing with the IRS should be using this!

Does it cost anything? I'm already broke waiting for my refund lol

With how much stress it saved me and finally getting clarity on my refund situation, it was definitely worth it. I was about to hire a tax pro which would have cost way more!

After waiting 2 months with no updates, I used a calling app from claimyr.com to finally get through to a real person at the IRS. Got a callback within an hour instead of waiting on hold all day! The agent was able to tell me exactly what was going on with my refund and even released it while I was on the phone. talking to an agent got my refund released so fast - best money I've ever spent considering I was waiting on a much larger refund amount.

0 coins

this sounds too good to be true tbh. does it actually work?

0 coins

100% worked for me! I was skeptical too but after 5 failed attempts trying to call the IRS myself and waiting on hold for hours, I was desperate. Got a call back with an actual IRS agent in 45 minutes. The agent saw that my return was just sitting there and pushed it through while we were on the phone.

How much did you have to pay for this? I'm hesitant about paying for something the IRS should provide for free 😤

0 coins

I get what youre saying and felt the same way initially, but after wasting entire days trying to reach someone, it was worth every penny. Especially since they actually got my refund moving! If you're waiting on thousands of dollars, it's a no-brainer.

just went to claimyr.com and used it - had a REAL IRS PERSON on the phone in 28 minutes!!! They fixed my issue and I'm getting my refund next week. I could kiss whoever made this service lmao

9 weeks is actually on the shorter end for what I've seen lately. My sister filed in February and didn't get her refund until late July. The whole system is just broken. I filed in early April and still waiting... it's been almost 12 weeks now with zero updates.

The IRS is such a joke 🤡 They expect us to pay our taxes on time every year but take forever to give us OUR MONEY back. I've been waiting 16 weeks for my refund and every time I call they give me a different story.

0 coins

fr fr the double standard is ridiculous. If we're late with payments we get penalties but they can sit on our refunds for months with no consequences 🙄

0 coins

EXACTLY. And then they have the nerve to charge interest when we owe them, but do they pay us interest for holding our refunds? barely anything worth mentioning.

0 coins

They actually do pay interest if they hold your refund past 45 days after the filing deadline (or the date you filed if you filed after the deadline). But its like 7% annual which is nothing compared to what they charge us 💀

Have you checked your account transcript on the IRS website? I was in the same boat but discovered there was a specific hold code on my account that the "Where's My Refund" tool wasn't showing. The transcript had way more detailed info.

0 coins

I tried but there are so many codes and numbers that I can't make sense of it. Is there a guide somewhere that explains what all the codes mean?

0 coins

There are some guides online but honestly they're super confusing. I used https://taxr.ai and it analyzed my transcript instantly and told me exactly what was happening. Way better than trying to figure it out myself.

0 coins

It's so frustrating how they leave us in the dark! I'm in week 11 of waiting. Called twice, got two totally different answers. First rep said everything looks fine just be patient. Second rep said there was a "verification issue" but wouldn't tell me what or how to fix it. Just "wait for a letter" that never came.

0 coins

This is what worries me! Did you ever get your refund?

0 coins

Eventually yeah but it took almost 4 months total. No explanation, no letter, nothing - just suddenly appeared in my account one day. The whole process is so random.

0 coins

Here's a hack I found - the IRS has different processing centers and some are way slower than others. You can tell which one got your return by the first two digits of your DLN (Document Locator Number) on your transcript. Centers in Fresno (05) and Austin (11) seem to be the slowest this year.

0 coins

How do you find this DLN number?

0 coins

It should be on your account transcript! Log into the IRS website, go to Tax Records, then Get Transcript, then view Account Transcript for 2024. Look for a 14-digit number that usually shows up near the filing date entry.

0 coins

Mine starts with 87... any idea which center that is?

0 coins

I think 87 is Philadelphia which has been better than some others. But honestly the whole system is backed up everywhere right now.

0 coins

I waited 11 weeks just to be told there was a "processing error" that they couldn't explain. Then another 4 weeks after that to finally get my refund. The IRS is severely understaffed and their computer systems are from like 1985 lol.

0 coins

did you file electronically or paper? Paper returns are taking FOREVER this year. My mom filed paper in february and still hasnt even been processed. Electronic usually faster but still taking longer than normal.

0 coins

I filed electronically using TurboTax on March 15th. Got the acceptance notification same day but nothing since then.

0 coins

strange that its taking so long for electronic... did you claim any credits like earned income or child tax? those tend to get additional scrutiny

0 coins

Yeah I did claim child tax credit for my two kids. Maybe thats whats causing the delay?

0 coins

Definitely could be. They're doing extra verification on those this year to prevent fraud. My brother had the same issue but eventually got his refund after about 10 weeks.

0 coins

9 weeks from NOW or 9 weeks from when you filed? Makes a big difference. If its from now, thats ridiculous and you should call your congressional representative. They can sometimes light a fire under the IRS.

0 coins

From now 😩 I already waited almost 12 weeks since filing in March. So potentially 21 weeks total which is insane.

0 coins

Yeah thats completely unacceptable. Definitely contact your representative. Their office can submit a congressional inquiry which often gets faster responses than anything we peasants can do ourselves lol

0 coins

I legit gave up calling the IRS after trying for weeks and never getting through. Then I found claimyr.com and had an agent on the phone in 40 minutes. They explained everything and even expedited my refund due to financial hardship. it was the only way I could talk to a live agent and totally worth it!

0 coins

I might have to try this. Been trying to call for days and cant get through the ridiculous phone tree.

0 coins

Pro tip: check your transcript for code 570 (additional account action pending) followed by 571 (resolved additional account action). If you see 570 but no 571 yet, that's why you're waiting. The 9 weeks is their standard response when there's a 570 code.

0 coins

The IRS told me 8 weeks back in april... its been 14 weeks now and still nothing 🤬 They just make up timeframes to get you off the phone tbh

0 coins

This ⬆️ They told me 6-8 weeks in March, and I finally got my refund YESTERDAY. Thats like 16 weeks! Don't believe anything they say about timeframes.

0 coins

Anyone else remember when refunds used to take like 7-10 days? Pepperidge Farm remembers... 😂

0 coins

omg right?? I remember getting my refund in like a week or two consistently for years. Now its like a part time job just trying to track it down.

0 coins

Last time I got a refund quickly was 2018. Ever since then its been a minimum 6 week wait even for the simplest returns. The system is completely broken.

0 coins

I had to wait 11 weeks for mine this year. The most frustrating part was checking "Where's My Refund" every day and seeing the same "Your return is still being processed" message with zero additional info. Felt like screaming into the void.

0 coins

I feel your pain! I went through the exact same thing - filed in early March and didn't get my refund until mid-August. The 9-week estimate they gave you is honestly pretty optimistic based on what I've seen this year. What helped me was actually getting my transcript analyzed to understand exactly what was holding things up. I used a service that broke down all those confusing codes and told me my return was stuck in identity verification. Once I knew what the actual issue was, I could address it directly instead of just waiting blindly. The "still being processed" message is basically useless - it tells you nothing about what's actually happening or when it might resolve. Your transcript will have way more detailed info about any holds or issues. Definitely worth checking if you haven't already! Hang in there - it's incredibly frustrating but you will eventually get your money. The system is just completely overwhelmed right now.

0 coins

This is really helpful, thank you! I keep seeing people mention getting their transcript analyzed but I'm not sure how to do that effectively. When you say you used a service, was it something like taxr.ai that others have mentioned? I'm willing to try anything at this point because staring at those codes myself just makes my head spin. Identity verification issues sound like they could definitely be what's happening with mine too since I moved states last year.
