Filed early April, IRS said refund with EITC/ACTC would arrive by August 15th but still nothing - any hope?
I submitted my return the first week of April with earned income and child tax credits. The IRS website and the rep I spoke with both said I should expect my refund around August 15th because of the mandatory delays for those credits. Well today is August 15th, the date they promised, and still absolutely nothing. No update on Where's My Refund, no deposit pending in my bank account. Has anyone else been told a specific date only to have that day come and go with nothing? I'm at my wits end with this - I've been counting on this money for months now.

This is unfortunately very common with tax credits like EITC and ACTC. The IRS is required by law to hold those refunds until at least mid-February, but that doesn't mean they process them immediately after that date. What's likely happening is that you're in the standard processing queue. Have you checked your transcript online? That will give you more detailed information than the Where's My Refund tool. You should be looking for an 846 code with a date - that's when they'll actually issue your refund. Without that code, you're still in processing.

•I tried checking my transcript but I couldn't get past the ID verification. Kept saying my phone number wasn't matching what they had on file...so frustrating.

•That's extra annoying! Try requesting a mailed transcript if you can't get through online. Also might be worth calling the dedicated refund hotline at 800-829-1954.

•Ugh I've called so many times and can never get through to a human. Just endless automated messages 😤

•Yeah the IRS phone system is designed to frustrate. I've had success calling right when they open at 7am EST. But honestly, most people with EITC/ACTC are waiting longer this year. I've seen anywhere from 2-4 months after filing.

•I had the exact same problem with transcript access! So annoying trying to verify my identity. Has anyone here succeeded with the facial recognition thing? I kept failing that too

I was in the same situation last year and got so frustrated trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. What finally helped me was using taxr.ai - it actually explained everything that was going on with my return instead of just guessing based on vague status bars and dates. It read my transcript, showed all the codes in plain English, and gave me an actual timeline. Saved me hours of stress and confusion. You should definitely check it out: https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It connects to your IRS account and analyzes everything - not just transcripts but also notices, letters, etc. The AI explains exactly what each code means for YOUR situation specifically, not just generic explanations. It even told me when my refund would actually arrive and it was spot on!

•HOLY CRAP I just tried taxr.ai and it literally solved the mystery of my delayed refund in minutes!!! It showed me I had a freeze code I didn't even know about and exactly what I needed to do to fix it. Cannot recommend this enough to anyone pulling their hair out with the IRS!!

•Yeah I get the frustration, but after spending literally 30+ hours trying to decode my transcript and getting nowhere, it was worth every penny. The peace of mind alone knowing exactly what was happening instead of guessing was priceless.

After weeks of trying to figure out my refund status and getting nowhere with the IRS website, I used the Claimyr app and finally got through to a real agent on the phone (claimyr.com). The agent was able to see that there was a small issue with my return that was holding things up - something I never would have known from the online status. They helped me resolve it in minutes and my refund was processed within a week. Honestly, reaching a live person at the IRS made all the difference and saved me months of waiting around confused.

•Does this actually work? I've spent HOURS trying to reach someone at the IRS with no luck.

•Yes! It basically navigates all the phone menus for you and holds your place in line. When an agent is available, it calls your phone and connects you. Saved me literally hours of holding and getting disconnected. Talking to the agent directly got my refund issue fixed in one call.

•this seems sketchy af... how do they even do that?

•It's not sketchy - they just have a system that waits on hold for you through all the IRS phone tree nonsense. When a human finally answers, it calls your phone and connects you. It was the only way I could ever talk to an actual person at the IRS and it was worth every penny since I finally got my $5300 refund released!

•Can confirm this works. I was about to give up on ever seeing my refund but getting a real person on the phone changed everything. Agent told me there was a simple verification flag they needed to remove. Never would have known that from the website.

This happen to me too. I filed February 12 this year and was told I'd get my refund April 1. April 1 came and went, then May, then June. I finally got my refund July 10th - almost THREE MONTHS after they said. No explanation, no apology, just randomly showed up in my account one day. The IRS is completly broken.

do u have any other letters or notices from them? sometimes they send something and just dont update the where's my refund tool. also check ur account transcript if u can. thats usually more helpful than wmr. i was in the same boat last year and found out from my transcript that they needed more info from me but never bothered to tell me 🙄

I filed around the same time as you and just got mine yesterday. No explanation for the delay, no updates on WMR, just suddenly appeared in my account. Maybe yours is on the way too? The system is completely broken so I wouldn't rely on any dates they give you.

•That gives me a little hope! Did you get any other updates before it showed up or literally nothing and then boom - refund?

•Literally nothing! WMR still showed processing, no transcript updates I could see, then randomly got a deposit notification from my bank. Completely ridiculous system.

Having the same issue but even worse - filed in March, IRS website still says "processing". Called a billion times but can never get through. I'm really thinking they've just forgotten about me at this point 😭

I checked my transcripts this morning and saw an 846 code with a date for next week - which means my refund is FINALLY being issued. I strongly recommend everyone try to access their transcripts, the WMR tool is garbage. I filed in march and had EITC/CTC so been waiting forever just like you.

•Go to irs.gov, click on "Get Your Tax Record", then "Get Transcript Online". You'll need to create an account if you don't have one already. Look for the "Account Transcript" for 2024 - that's where you'll see the codes and dates.

Bunch of THEIVES 🤬 They hold our money for months with no interest but if we owe them even $1 they come after us with penalties. How is this legal?!?

•EXACTLY! If I owed them and didn't pay by Apr 15 they'd be charging me interest and penalties but they can just sit on our refunds indefinitely with no consequences 🤡

•Actually there is a law that they have to pay interest if they're late! Check your refund when it finally comes - if it's more than 45 days after filing (or after April 15, whichever is later) they add interest.

Have you tried checking your transcript? That will tell you exactly where your return is in the process. The 'wheres my refund' tool is basically useless.

I recommend checking the IRS2Go app in addition to the website - sometimes it updates faster than the website for some reason. Also, if you can't check transcripts yourself, you can request a tax advocate to help. Their number is 877-777-4778, but be prepared to wait on hold for hours....

IRS is a total dumpster fire this year. My return was accepted mid-March, and I just got my refund last week. FIVE MONTHS for something that should take weeks at most. And I've been filing the same basic return for years with nothing complicated. The whole system needs a complete overhaul.

Check ur bank account! Sometimes it shows up there before the IRS even updates their system. Mine was deposited like 2 weeks b4 the wmr tool updated 🤦♂️

You should definitely contact your congressman/congresswoman's office! Not many people know this but they have dedicated staff who can help with federal agency issues including the IRS. I was stuck in limbo for months, called my representative's office, and they had someone from IRS contact me within a week. Refund followed shortly after. It's literally their job to help with this stuff!

•This is great advice! My sister did this last year and it actually worked. The congressional offices have special contacts at the IRS.

•I never thought of this! Do I just call their office? What do I say?

•Yep just call their local office (not DC) and ask to speak with whoever handles constituent services or casework. Explain your situation and that you've tried all the normal channels with no success. They'll probably have you fill out a privacy release form, then they'll contact the IRS on your behalf.

I work for a tax preperation company (not saying which one lol) and I can tell you we're seeing MASSIVE delays this year for refunds with EITC/ACTC. The official line from the IRS is they're "working through a backlog" but internally we know they're doing extra verification on almost all returns with those credits this year due to high fraud rates last year. Your return is probably sitting in a verification queue. Don't expect it anytime soon honestly.

•Any tips for getting it processed faster? Should we be calling or is that just a waste of time?
0 coins
Adrian Connor
•Calling rarely helps unless you can actually get through to a human (almost impossible these days). If you can access your transcript and see a 570 code (refund hold) followed by a 971 (notice issued), then you probably need to respond to whatever they're asking for. Otherwise, it's just a waiting game. The system is completely overwhelmed.
