IRS rejected my e-file due to accidental identity theft question, now have to file by mail - what's the process? (SC)
I made a mistake when filling out my tax return last month. I accidentally clicked 'yes' on a question about being a victim of identity theft when I meant to click 'no'. Now the IRS system is saying I need to file by paper mail because of this error. I'm in South Carolina and have never filed by mail before. What exactly do I need to do to file by mail? Do I print everything out? Do I need to include a letter explaining my mistake? How long will this delay my refund? Really frustrated that one wrong click is causing all this hassle.

Tax professional here. When you accidentally mark 'yes' to the identity theft question, the IRS automatically requires you to paper file as a security measure. Here's what you need to do: • Print your ENTIRE tax return including all forms and schedules • Sign and date the return (in blue ink preferably) • Attach all your W-2s and any 1099 forms that had tax withheld (use paperclips, don't staple) • Include a brief cover letter explaining the error (that you mistakenly marked 'yes' to the identity theft question) • Make copies of everything for your records • Mail it to the appropriate IRS center for South Carolina Unfortunately, paper returns are taking 6-8 months to process right now, so your refund will be significantly delayed compared to e-filing. Make sure to send it certified mail with return receipt so you have proof of mailing.

•Thank you so much! Is there a specific format I should use for the cover letter? Or just a simple explanation? Also, where do I find the correct mailing address?

•Just a simple letter stating "I mistakenly answered 'yes' to the identity theft question. This was an error. I have not been a victim of identity theft." Sign and date it. For SC, mail to: Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Kansas City, MO 64999-0002

•Make sure u use certified mail with tracking. That way u have proof they received it if anything happens down the road.

•Thanks for the tip! Definitely will send certified. Really don't want to lose it in the mail after all this trouble.

I had this EXACT same issue last tax season. Honestly the best thing I did was use taxr.ai to help guide me through the process. It explained exactly what was happening with my return and why the rejection happened, plus gave me step by step instructions for fixing it. The analysis it gave me was so much clearer than anything I found online - it literally saved me hours of research and stress. I use it for all my tax stuff now. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Kaiya Rivera
•It does WAY more than just reading transcripts. It basically analyzes your entire tax situation, explains everything in plain english, and gives you personalized steps to resolve whatever issues you're having. For this specific rejection problem, it told me exactly what forms to include, how to write the explanation letter, and even which IRS office to send it to. Worth every penny - my refund came faster than expected even with paper filing.

•HOLY CRAP I JUST TRIED IT AND IT'S AMAZING. Why isn't everyone using this??? I've spent literal DAYS trying to understand my tax situation and this broke it down in minutes. The interface is super clean too. Thanks for recommending this!!!

•another tax app? 🙄 what makes this one different from the 500 others?

•The difference is it's not for filing taxes - it's specifically for understanding tax problems, IRS notices, and weird situations like refund delays or rejections. It's like having a tax pro explain everything to you without paying hundreds for a consultation.

So I had this EXACT same issue last year. I found a solution that actually works - I used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) and got connected with an actual IRS agent who helped me resolve everything. I was able to fix the mistake over the phone instead of waiting for months with a paper return. The agent walked me through the whole process and even put notes in my account about the error. Honestly it saved me so much time and headache.

•wait does this actually work? i thought it was impossible to get through to the IRS

•Yes it absolutely works! I spent 3 days trying to call the IRS myself with no luck - just that stupid automated system that kept hanging up on me. Claimyr got me through to an actual person in like 15 minutes. Best money I've ever spent considering how much time and stress it saved me.

•sounds fishy... how do they do it when nobody else can get through? 🤔

•They basically have a system that navigates all the phone menus and holds in line for you, then calls you back when there's an actual agent. Nothing sketchy about it - they just automate the painful waiting process. After getting my refund issue fixed in one phone call instead of waiting 6+ months, I'll never go back to calling the IRS directly lol

Dealing with similiar issue right now! For those saying to paper file, where do u put your bank info for direct deposit? Or do they mail you a check no matter what?
0 coins
Lucy Taylor
•There's a section on your 1040 form (line 35) where you can enter your bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit. As long as you fill that out correctly, they'll still do direct deposit even with a paper return.

•Oh thank goodness, I was worried about getting a paper check since my mailbox isn't super secure. Thanks for the info!

I don't understand why the IRS system is so janky lol. Like it's 2025 and they can't build in a way to fix a simple checkbox error? my company's HR system lets me correct mistakes but nooooo not the government 🤡

Since you're in SC, make sure you're sending to the right IRS center! Different states send to different places. Also make double copies of EVERYTHING before you mail it. The IRS lost my paper return last year and I didn't have copies... nightmare situation.

•This happened to me too!! They claimed they never received my return even though I had tracking confirmation. I had to resend everything and wait another 4 months. Always make copies and always use certified mail!

•Thanks for the warning. I'll definitely make copies of everything. Would taking pictures of each page with my phone be enough or should I actually photocopy everything?

William Schwarz
•Actual photocopies are better. Phone pics might not be clear enough if you need to reference specific line items later. Plus some phones compress images which can make text hard to read.

just curious - do you have to mail in state taxes too or just federal?

Lucy Taylor
•Great question! It depends on your state. Most states will still accept e-filed returns even if your federal return must be paper filed. For South Carolina specifically, you can still e-file your SC state return separately even if your federal is rejected.

You can actually call the Taxpayer Advocate Service for help with this. They might be able to help you resolve this without going through the long paper filing process. But good luck reaching them - I tried calling every day for weeks and couldn't get through. The number is 1-877-777-4778 if you want to try.

•The Taxpayer Advocate Service is so overloaded they're not even taking new cases unless you're facing immediate financial hardship. They won't help with this type of issue anymore - I tried last month.

•I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach the TAS after trying for 2 weeks on my own. Got through in one day. They can help with getting through to the advocate service too, not just regular IRS.

I just wanna say that the whole identity theft question thing is SO DUMB. Like the real identity thieves are gonna check 'no' anyway! All it does is inconvenience honest people who make a simple mistake. ugh the IRS is stuck in the 1970s i swear 😤

•THIS!! i have been saying this for years! all these "security measures" just punish normal people. my uncle got his identity stolen and the IRS was zero help, but god forbid you click the wrong box 🙄

When I had to paper file, I attached a bright colored paper (neon green) with "MISTAKEN IDENTITY THEFT SELECTION - ERROR CORRECTION" written in big letters on top of my return. My tax guy suggested this to make sure it got attention. Got my refund in 4 months which isn't great but better than the 8+ months some people wait.

Isaac Wright
•That's a smart idea, I'll definitely try that! Did you still include a regular explanation letter too?

Aurora St.Pierre
•Yep! Had the detailed explanation on regular paper inside. The bright paper was just to catch their eye when they open the envelope. Can't guarantee it'll work for everyone but worth a try!

If u have a tax preparer u use regularly, they might be able to help advocate with the IRS for u! My H&R Block guy was able to call some special tax professional hotline and get my issue fixed when I had a similar problem.
