IRS "Fraudulent Tax Filing Identified" message before I've filed - must mail paper return by April 15, 2025
I just logged into my IRS account to check my tax return status and I'm completely freaking out. There's a message saying "Fraudulent Tax Filing Identified" and that IRS records show a return has been filed using my identity. The exact message says "IRS records indicate that a return has been filed using your identity. Criminals attempt to file a fraudulent return and claim a tax refund under a stolen identity. By letting us know you're a victim of identity theft, the refund will not be issued." I haven't even filed my taxes yet for this year! I was planning to do them next week. The message says I won't be able to file electronically now and have to mail a paper return by April 15, 2025. It specifically states "If you were planning to file a tax return this tax season, you will not be able to file electronically and will need to mail your paper return by April 15, 2025. To find where to file your return, go to Where To File Paper Tax Returns" There's also something about an Identity Protection PIN that I need to get. The message explains: "If you don't already have an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) you may get an IP PIN as a proactive step to protect yourself from tax-related identity theft. An (IP PIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The IP PIN is known only to you and the IRS. It helps us verify your identity when you file your electronic or paper return. Even though you may not have a filing requirement, an IP PIN still protects your account." It also says I can "Visit the Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft and Review Identity Protection on the IRS website, OR Call the Identity Theft Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490 to speak with a customer service representative." This is dated March 03, 2025 and I'm so confused and worried about what to do next. Has anyone dealt with this before? What steps should I take? I'm in a complete panic right now!

This is identity theft and you need to act immediately. Here's what you should do: • First, report this to the IRS by calling their Identity Theft Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490. They'll help you file Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit). • Get an IP PIN through the IRS website as mentioned in the message. This is essential for future filings. • File a report with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov • Contact credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit reports • File a police report with your local law enforcement • Review all your financial accounts for suspicious activity You'll need to file a paper return as mentioned and it may take up to 6 months for your case to be resolved. The IRS will assign you a case number and work with you to resolve it. Stay organized and keep copies of everything.

Thank you so much for all this information. I just called that IRS number but after 45 minutes on hold got disconnected. So frustrating! Has anyone had success getting through to them?

Just a tip - when you file the paper return make sure to include the Identity Theft Affidavit (Form 14039) with it. And KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING 💯

I went through this exact nightmare last year and spent WEEKS trying to piece together what was happening with my account. The IRS agents I talked to (when I could actually reach someone) gave me different answers each time. I wish I had known about taxr.ai back then - it saved me so much stress when dealing with the aftermath. It analyzes your transcripts and explains everything in plain English, tells you exactly what steps to take, and even helps with identity theft cases. Seriously the most helpful tool I found. Check it out at https://taxr.ai - it would have saved me dozens of hours of research and anxiety.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read transcripts. It actually interprets what's happening with your account, identifies issues like identity theft indicators, explains what each code means for YOUR specific situation, and gives you personalized steps to resolve it. It saved me when I was dealing with the aftermath of my identity theft case. The IRS was giving me the runaround for months and taxr.ai helped me understand exactly what was happening and what I needed to do. Best tool ever for dealing with the IRS!

Not an ad at all! Just someone who went through ID theft hell with the IRS and wished I'd found this tool sooner. It literally saved my sanity when trying to figure out all those cryptic transcript codes and what they meant for my case. I recommend it to everyone now because the IRS is impossible to deal with otherwise.

After dealing with a similar situation, I was stuck in IRS phone tree hell for DAYS trying to reach a human. Finally found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes (claimyr.com). They called me back with an agent on the line who helped me start the identity theft resolution process. Honestly worth every penny since I wasted hours trying to call them myself. The agent was able to flag my account and give me direct instructions on what to do next.

How does this work? Sounds kinda sketchy tbh

Nothing sketchy about it! They just navigate the IRS phone system for you and call you back when they have an agent. Saved me hours of hold music and frustration. When you're dealing with identity theft, the last thing you need is more stress trying to reach the IRS.

Can confirm this works!! I used it after trying for THREE DAYS to get through to the IRS about my identity theft case. Got a call back with an agent in about 30 mins. Best money I've spent all year considering I was about to lose my mind on hold 🤣

This happened to my cousin. The criminal filed a fake return with a huge refund amount. Make sure you check your credit reports ASAP and freeze your credit at all three bureaus. Someone got enough of your personal info to file a tax return, so they might try opening credit cards too.

Just checked my credit reports and thankfully nothing suspicious there yet. I did freeze all three though. Thanks for the advice!

Ugh the IRS is such a disaster these days. They're so understaffed that identity theft cases are taking 8-12 months to resolve. I've been dealing with mine since May 2024 and still waiting.

FACTS. I waited 13 months for my identity theft case to be resolved. Had to get my senator's office involved to finally get movement.

That's exactly why I gave up trying to deal with them directly and used taxr.ai to navigate the mess. It helped me understand exactly what was happening and what my options were. So much better than trying to piece everything together from different IRS agents who all give different answers. https://taxr.ai

Has anyone tried going to a local IRS office for this? I know you need appointments but wondering if that's faster than trying to call?

I tried last year and the earliest appointment was 2 months out. By then I had already resolved most of it by phone and paper forms. But they were helpful for getting my IP PIN setup once I finally got in.

appointments are impossible to get in my area. But I called using claimyr.com and got through in like 20 min. totally worth it to not waste an entire day on hold.

get an IP PIN asap!! that will help prevent this from happening again next year. the irs gives these out to people who've had identity theft. its a 6 digit number you use when filing.

Something similar happened to me a couple years ago. Once you get this resolved, use a tax professional next year, not one of those cheap chains or online services. Find a proper CPA or EA who can help protect you. Also set up ID monitoring service and freeze your credit at all three bureaus.

Don't panic! This happened to me two years ago and I got through it. Besides what everyone else said, make sure to request your Wage and Income transcripts from the IRS to see what was reported under your SSN. Sometimes the thieves file with fake W-2s, and you need to know what you're dealing with.

I tried to get my transcripts but the system won't let me access them online anymore because of the fraud flag. So frustrating!

Oof, yeah that happens. You can use Form 4506-T to request them by mail or try calling. I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I was in your situation. They connected me to an IRS agent who could pull them up and tell me what was on file.

This is yet another example of how broken our tax system is. In other countries the government just sends you a statement of what you owe or are owed. Here we have this complicated mess with identity theft running rampant. Makes me so angry.

ive gone thru this twice. pain in the ass but heres wut u need to do: call IRS iddentiy theft hotline 1-800-908-4490, file a police report, file with FTC at identitytheft.gov, AND MOST IMPORTANT get urself an IP PIN from irs.gov for next years filings. the IP PIN is the only thing that stopped them from doing it to me a 3rd time.

whatever you do, DO NOT IGNORE THIS. if u dont file ur paper return as instructed, the IRS might think the fraudulent return was yours and come after you for any fraudulent refund that got paid out. happened to my brother and it was a nightmare.

This! And keep records of EVERYTHING you submit to them. My case got "lost" twice and I had to resubmit 🙄

After going through this mess last year, I can tell you that using taxr.ai helped me understand what was happening with my transcripts and the next steps I should take. I was totally lost with all the IRS codes and notices until I used it. Highly recommend for situations like this! https://taxr.ai
