Someone filed my 2023 taxes without my knowledge - IRS won't let me file online now. Help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. Someone filed my taxes for 2023 without my knowledge, and now I can't file online myself. I called the IRS earlier this year and they said they'd take care of it, but now that I'm trying to file, the system won't let me. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do next?

Ugh, that sucks! Identity theft is no joke. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the IRS ASAP and explain the situation again. 2. Ask about their identity verification process. You might need to fill out Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit). 3. Request a copy of your tax transcript. Look for any weird transaction codes. 4. Ask them what steps you need to take to file your 2023 taxes correctly. 5. Consider putting a freeze on your credit reports to prevent further fraud. Good luck, and keep us posted!

•This is solid advice. I went through something similar last year and these steps helped me sort it out. It's a pain, but you'll get through it!

•Quick question - how long did the whole process take for you? I'm in a similar boat and wondering how long I'll be dealing with this mess 😩

•It took me about 3 months from start to finish. The IRS moves slooooow, but keep calling and checking in. Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all that 🛢️

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/IDKN1SpQoEI

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Anyone else tried it?

•20 bucks? No way, I'd rather wait on hold for free 🙄

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho. And yeah, it's legit - they've been featured in some news articles too.

•Just used it yesterday actually. Worked like a charm. Beats listening to that god-awful hold music for hours 🎵🔇

This happened to my cousin last year. It was a nightmare to sort out. Make sure you keep ALL your documentation and correspondence with the IRS. And don't be afraid to reach out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service if things get really sticky.

•The Taxpayer Advocate Service is a godsend! They helped me resolve a similar issue in half the time it would've taken otherwise.

This is why I always file as early as possible. Reduces the chance of someone beating you to it. Hope you get it sorted out soon, OP!

•Early filing is great until you realize you made a mistake or are missing info. Then you're stuck filing an amended return anyway 🤷♂️

Plot twist: what if it was a time-traveling version of yourself who filed your taxes? 🕒🤯

I work in tax prep, and unfortunately, this is becoming more common. Here are some additional tips: 1. Check if you can file a paper return instead of online. 2. Consider using an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for future filings. 3. Be prepared for a longer refund wait time while they investigate. 4. If you usually get state refunds, check with your state tax agency too. Hang in there, it's a process but it'll get resolved!

•Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely look into the IP PIN. Any idea how long the investigation usually takes?

•It can vary, but typically 3-6 months. Sometimes longer if it's complex. Just keep following up regularly!

unpopular opinion: maybe the person who filed your taxes did a better job than you would have 🤷♀️ free tax prep! (i'm kidding, identity theft sucks
