IRS refund sent to closed account - How to get funds back to IRS?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. My tax refund got sent to an account that was closed due to inactivity, and now the funds are locked up. I'm trying to figure out how to get the money sent back to the IRS from that account. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on how to handle this situation would be really appreciated!

Miguel Ortiz

Oof, that's a tough situation. Here's what I'd recommend: 1. Get all your docs together - anything related to the closed account and IRS stuff. 2. Call your bank ASAP. They might be able to send the money back to the IRS. 3. Get in touch with the IRS (good luck with that lol). Explain what happened and ask how they can reissue the refund. 4. Follow up like crazy. Don't let this fall through the cracks. Good luck, OP! Let us know how it goes.

This is solid advice. I had a similar issue last year and following these steps helped me resolve it. It took a while, but I eventually got my refund.

Quick question - how long did it take for you to get this sorted out? I'm in a similar boat and wondering how long I'll be treading water 🏊‍♂️

It took about 2 months from start to finish. The bank was pretty quick, but dealing with the IRS... well, you know how that goes 🙄

For real tho. I spent like 3 hours on hold last week and still didn't get through. It's ridiculous!

Pro tip: I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Jc9x-gysK0

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but it really did work for me. Saved me hours of frustration.

Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency we already pay for with our taxes? Seems kinda messed up 🤔

I get where you're coming from, but for me, time is money. I'd rather pay $20 than waste a whole day on hold. Just my two cents 🤷‍♂️

This happened to my cousin last year. It was a nightmare to fix. Took him like 6 months to finally get his refund. The system is so broken 😤

Have you tried reaching out to your local taxpayer advocate? They might be able to help push things along.

I hadn't even thought of that! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it.

I work at a bank (not giving financial advice, just sharing info). In situations like this, we usually can't just 'send the money back' to the IRS. The funds are often held in a suspense account. You'll likely need to work with both the bank and the IRS to get this resolved. Be prepared for a lot of back-and-forth.

Thanks for the insider perspective! Any tips on how to make the process smoother when dealing with the bank?

Document everything. Get names, dates, and reference numbers for every conversation. Ask for written confirmations when possible. And be patient - these things can take time to resolve.

hey op, just wondering - how long was your account inactive before they closed it? might be good info for others to know so they can avoid this situation

It was about 18 months of no activity. I totally forgot about the account tbh. Lesson learned the hard way 😅

This is why I always use direct deposit for my refunds. Less chance of things going wrong. Hope you get it sorted out soon, OP!
