IRS call dropped during transfer - Need advice for wage and withholding questions

I had a call with the IRS yesterday about my wage questions and withholdings. The agent said she needed to transfer me to another department, but the call dropped during the transfer. Now I'm trying to prepare for my next call. I've already talked to my employer about the withholding error. Any advice on what I should have ready for the IRS?

Ugh, that sucks! 😤 I hate when calls drop like that. Here's what I'd suggest having ready: 1. W-2 and recent pay stubs 2. Any emails or docs from your employer about the withholding issue 3. Your tax returns from the last couple years 4. A clear explanation of the problem (write it down if it helps) 5. Questions you want to ask - have them written out Good luck! The IRS can be a real pain to deal with.

Thanks for the detailed list! I'll definitely write everything down. Do you think I should mention the dropped call from yesterday?

Yeah, mention it briefly. They might have notes from that call which could help. But don't dwell on it - focus on solving your issue.

Good advice! I'd add: have your SSN and filing status ready too. They always ask for that stuff right away.

I feel your pain, OP. I've been dealing with a similar issue for months now. The IRS is seriously understaffed and overworked. It's a nightmare trying to get anything done with them.

Pro tip: call early in the morning, like right when they open. You're more likely to get through and the agents are usually less frazzled.

This! 👆 Also, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be less busy than Mondays or Fridays.

Hey, I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

How does it work exactly? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

Basically, yeah. They have a system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold. When a real person answers, it calls you. Pretty slick.

Have you checked the IRS website? They have a lot of info about correcting withholding errors. Might save you a call altogether.

I looked, but couldn't find anything specific to my situation. That's why I'm trying to talk to someone directly.

Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Get the name and ID number of every person you talk to, and take detailed notes of what they say. It'll save you a lot of headaches if you have to escalate later.

This is solid advice. I learned it the hard way after getting conflicting info from different agents. 😑

Have you considered reaching out to a tax professional or CPA? They might be able to handle this for you and save you the hassle of dealing with the IRS directly.

I hadn't thought of that. Do you think it's worth the cost for a relatively simple withholding issue?

Depends on how complicated your situation is and how much you value your time. For some people, it's totally worth it to let a pro handle it.

Friendly reminder: Be patient with the IRS agents. They're dealing with a lot and being nice can go a long way in getting help. 😊

This! I used to work for the IRS. The nicer callers always got extra effort from me.
