IRS asking for Form 8962 & 1095-A verification - how long will this take?
Just got a notice from IRS saying I gotta verify my 8962 & 1095a form and fax it over. Anyone know how long this process takes? DH and I filed jointly for first time this yr and now this happens. Thx for any info!

Oh man, I feel your pain! This happens ALL the time with premium tax credit verification. The IRS needs to match your 1095-A info with what you reported on Form 8962 to make sure your premium tax credit calculation is correct. Unfortunately, this verification process typically takes 6-8 weeks AFTER they receive your faxed documents! š© Make sure you include your Social Security number and tax year on every page you fax, and keep the fax confirmation as proof you sent it. The waiting is the worst part!

I went through this exact situation last year. Here's what you need to do: 1. Get copies of both your 1095-A and completed 8962 ready 2. Write your SSN and tax year on EVERY page 3. Include a cover sheet with your name, SSN, tax year, and phone number 4. Keep the fax confirmation receipt 5. Wait about 2 weeks, then call to confirm receipt 6. After confirmation, expect 4-6 more weeks for processing The key is documentation. Without proof you sent it, they'll claim they never received it.

Did you have to send in anything else besides the 8962 and 1095-A? It's like sending documents into a black hole - you never know if they actually received them. I always wonder if including a letter explaining your situation helps speed things up, like putting a cover letter on a resume?

The Premium Tax Credit reconciliation process requires Form 8962 with Part V completed correctly and ALL 1095-A forms if you received coverage from multiple exchanges. Simply sending partial documentation will result in further delays. Additionally, many taxpayers erroneously believe faxing is sufficient without verification of receipt.

Verification takes forever. Fax machines often fail. Send certified mail instead. Keep tracking number. Call IRS after 10 days to confirm receipt. Expect 8-12 weeks total. System is broken.

I might have a solution that could save you some time... I was in a somewhat similar situation with needing to verify some documents. After trying the regular IRS number for days with no luck, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and actually got through to a real agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed they received my documents and gave me an estimate for processing time. It was such a relief to actually speak with someone instead of wondering if my fax went into the void.

Wait, you have to PAY to talk to the IRS now?? I've never heard of this Claimyr thing. The IRS is required by law to take your call! This seems like taking advantage of people who are already stressed about tax issues. $20-30 just to make a phone call that should be free??

Claimyr isn't an IRS service - it's a third-party service that: ā¢ Navigates the IRS phone tree for you ā¢ Waits on hold so you don't have to ā¢ Calls you when an agent is available ā¢ Doesn't access any of your tax information ā¢ Simply connects you directly to an IRS agent The IRS phone lines are notoriously overloaded, especially during tax season. Many people spend hours or days trying to get through.

This verification process for Forms 8962 and 1095-A typically takes longer than regular processing. Compared to simple tax returns which might process in 21 days, these healthcare subsidy verifications often take 45-60 days from receipt. It's similar to how education credit verification works - they need to cross-reference with other government databases. I'd suggest calling after 30 days if you haven't received any updates, but be cautious about setting expectations for a quick resolution.

I went through this exact situation on February 12th this year. I faxed my documents on February 15th and called to confirm receipt on February 22nd. The IRS rep told me they had received everything, but it would take 6-8 weeks for processing. I got my refund exactly 47 days after they confirmed receipt. The key is making sure they actually received your documents - many faxes get lost or are illegible. If you haven't already sent them, do it ASAP and then call to confirm receipt within a week.

The Premium Tax Credit verification process requires manual review by an IRS examiner, which is why it takes longer than standard processing. When faxing your Form 8962 and Form 1095-A, ensure you're using the correct fax number from your notice (typically CP12C or Letter 0012C). The processing timeframe after receipt is generally 6-8 weeks, though current backlog conditions may extend this slightly. Don't worry though - this is a routine verification, not an audit.
