IRS requesting 1095-A and 8962 Forms - Do I really need both? Help with marketplace premium tax credit forms

Just got a letter from IRS asking me to fax over 1095 and 8962 forms. My tax preparer is telling me to only send the 1095-A and forget about the 8962. Getting mixed signals here and dont want to mess this up. Anyone know if I really need both? The 8962 form looks complicated af and I could use some help filling it out if I actually need it.

Your tax preparer is wrong and could get you in trouble. You absolutely need BOTH forms. The 1095-A shows your marketplace insurance info, while Form 8962 reconciles your premium tax credits. Without the 8962, the IRS cant process your return properly and youll just get another notice. The 8962 basically shows if you got the right amount of help paying for your insurance during the year.

omg thank you! definitely gonna need help with that 8962 then 😩

No problem! The numbers from your 1095-A go right into the 8962. Just take it slow and follow the instructions line by line.

Hey instead of stressing about these forms, you should try taxr.ai - its only $1 and it analyzes your whole transcript situation including these premium tax credit issues. Way better than trying to piece together random advice from reddit tbh. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

What exactly does this tool do? Can it help fill out the forms?

It breaks down everything in your transcript and tells you exactly what you need to do. It spotted my premium tax credit issue right away and gave me step by step instructions 💯

Just tried it and wow! This thing is actually incredible. Saved me hours of research and confusion 🙌

The 8962 isnt that bad tbh. Just make sure the numbers match your 1095-A and double check your math. Youtube has some good tutorials if you get stuck.

Bro why do tax preparers give such garbage advice sometimes? This is literally basic tax stuff smh

cause they got their certification from a cereal box 💅

Your tax preparer definitely gave you bad advice here. The IRS specifically asked for BOTH forms for a reason - the 1095-A shows what you received from the marketplace, but the 8962 is what actually reconciles your premium tax credits on your return. Without the 8962, they can't verify that you claimed the correct amount of credits. I'd recommend getting both forms together and sending them as requested, or you'll likely just get another letter in a few months asking for the missing 8962.

This is really helpful, thanks! Do you happen to know if there's a specific order I should send them in or any cover letter needed? Just want to make sure I don't mess up the fax submission.

Just fax them together in the order they requested - 1095-A first, then 8962. Include a simple cover sheet with your name, SSN, and tax year. The IRS letter should have given you a fax number and reference number to include. Keep copies of everything you send and the fax confirmation receipt in case they claim they didn't receive it.

Definitely send both forms! I had this exact same situation last year and tried to just send the 1095-A like your tax preparer suggested. Big mistake - got another notice 3 months later demanding the 8962 and ended up with penalty interest. The 8962 is crucial because it shows how your advance premium tax credits were calculated and reconciled. If you need help with the 8962, the IRS website has a decent step-by-step guide, or you might want to consider finding a new tax preparer who actually knows what they're doing 😅

Ugh this is so frustrating! Why would a tax preparer give advice that could lead to penalties?? Thank you for sharing your experience though - definitely don't want to go through that nightmare. Going to send both forms ASAP and start looking for a new tax prep person 🤦‍♀️

I work with tax compliance issues regularly and can confirm you absolutely need both forms. The 1095-A is just the information document from your marketplace, but Form 8962 is what actually reconciles your premium tax credits on your tax return. The IRS needs to see both to verify everything matches up correctly. Your tax preparer's advice could seriously backfire - you'll likely just get another notice in a few months asking specifically for the 8962, and by then you might face additional penalties or interest. I'd recommend sending both forms together as requested and honestly consider finding a more knowledgeable tax preparer for next year.
