Filed 2023 taxes but forgot 1095-A/8962 forms - How to submit after filing?

Just got notified I need to submit my health insurance forms (1095-A and 8962) but I already e-filed my taxes 2 weeks ago. Not sure how to handle this since I cant e-file again. Anyone know the process for submitting these forms after the fact?

You'll need to wait for the IRS to send you a formal notice (usually Letter 12C) requesting these forms. Once you receive it, you'll have to mail in Form 8962 along with your 1095-A to the address provided in the letter. Don't try to send it before getting the notice - they won't process it correctly. The notice typically comes within 4-6 weeks after filing.

ugh that means more waiting 😩 any idea how long after sending the forms it usually takes?

Usually another 6-8 weeks after they receive your forms. But honestly its been taking longer lately with all the backlogs

Hey! Instead of playing the waiting game, you should try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's happening and when you'll likely get your refund. It costs $1 but totally worth it for peace of mind. https://taxr.ai

Pro tip: DONT mail anything until you get the official notice. They'll just lose it in their system if you send it early

can confirm. learned this the hard way last year lol

Quick heads up - make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them. The IRS is known for losing mail these days with all the backlogs their dealing with. And when you do mail it, use certified mail with tracking so you have proof they received it.

thanks for the tip! definitely gonna do certified mail

Also worth noting - if you owe additional taxes after submitting the 8962, you'll get a separate bill for that amount plus interest from your original filing date. But if you end up getting a larger refund, they'll send you the difference. The whole process is annoying but at least they do eventually sort it out once they have all your forms.
