IRS Phone Number for Refund Status Check?

According to TurboTax's tracker, my refund should've hit my account last week. Checked the IRS2Go app and WMR portal but they're just showing 'processing'. Need to call someone directly to find out what's happening with my money - I've got some dividend reinvestments I'm waiting to make. What's the best IRS number to call for refund status?

The main IRS refund hotline is 800-829-1954. It's an automated system that'll give u the same info as WMR tho. For talking to an actual person, call 800-829-0582 and when prompted, enter extension 652. Prepare for LONG wait times - avg is 45+ mins rn during peak season. Have ur SSN, filing status, and exact refund amt ready when u call. Pro tip: call early AM (7am EST when they open) for shortest queues.

THANK YOU!!! Been trying to figure this out for days! The IRS website is so confusing with all their different numbers and I was getting so frustrated trying to find the right one to call about my refund!

Just to clarify a couple things that helped me when I called: 1. Make sure you have your exact refund amount from line 34 of your 1040 form 2. They'll ask for your filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.) 3. Have last year's AGI handy as they sometimes ask for verification 4. Be prepared to verify your identity with your birthdate I was relieved when I finally got through and found out my return was just in normal processing.

The IRS phone queue system is notoriously difficult to navigate during filing season. According to IRS Procedural Notice 2024-01, average wait times currently exceed 60 minutes with call abandonment rates of approximately 35%. I've had success using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) - it's a service that navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is available. The service significantly reduces the time investment required to reach an IRS representative during peak processing periods.

• Is this actually legit? • How do they maintain your place in line? • Does this really work during high-volume periods? • What's the success rate? • Seems like something that might just take your money without results

Has anyone here actually used Claimyr successfully? I've been reading about it on the r/tax subreddit and people seem to have good experiences, but I'm curious if it works for refund status inquiries specifically or just general IRS calls?

According to Internal Revenue Manual section 21.1.3.3, taxpayers should wait at least 21 days after e-filing before calling about refund status. Per IRS Publication 2043, the IRS is legally required to process most returns within this timeframe, but the current processing backlog has extended this period. If you filed electronically and it's been less than 21 days, representatives will likely just direct you back to the Where's My Refund tool. If you filed by paper, the wait time guidance extends to 6 weeks minimum before calling.

I was in a similar situation last month - refund showed as 'processing' for 31 days. When compared to my experience in previous years, this was unusually long. I finally reached an agent who explained they had a system flag requiring manual review of my investment income. The verification took about 10 minutes once I got through, and my refund was released the next day. This situation happens more frequently with returns containing Schedule D or significant dividend income compared to simple W-2 only returns. The technical reason is that the automated matching system cross-references your reported investment income with 1099 forms from brokerages.

Haha, the IRS and their mysterious "system flags" 🙄 But seriously, this is pretty common with investment income. The system often flags returns with capital gains for additional verification, especially if you have multiple brokerages or cryptocurrency transactions.

I need to call them ASAP then! I have investment income too and my refund is going on 28 days now. I was planning to use that money for Q2 estimated taxes which are due soon!

Would this apply to dividend reinvestment programs too? Or is it only for actual buying and selling of stocks? I wonder if having a DRIP set up triggers these kinds of reviews?

After spending hours trying to decode my transcript - which was like trying to read hieroglyphics without a Rosetta Stone - I found https://taxr.ai which analyzes your IRS transcript and explains what's happening with your refund. It's like having a tax pro looking over your shoulder explaining all those cryptic codes. Saved me from having to make a call at all since it showed my refund was just working through normal processing steps.

I was probably in a somewhat similar situation last month. After not getting any useful information from the automated system, I finally got through to a human after calling maybe 20+ times. Turns out they were just holding my refund because they needed to verify some information about my investment income. Once I spoke with someone, it was resolved fairly quickly, and I received my refund about 5 days later.

Don't waste time with the phone if you haven't checked your transcript yet. Go to irs.gov, create an account if you don't have one, and view your tax transcript. It will show exactly what's happening with your return and usually has more detailed information than you'll get from a phone representative.

What investment platforms are you using? I've noticed that some brokerages are slower than others at reporting 1099 information to the IRS, which can cause delays in refund processing. Did you receive any CP01 notices or other IRS correspondence?

I've been using Fidelity for years and this is the first time I've had an issue. Last year I had almost the same amount of dividend income and my refund came through in 8 days. The only difference this year is I started a DRIP program. No notices from the IRS yet - that's why I wanted to call them.
