Need Direct IRS Phone Number - Filed 1/23 Still Waiting
Anyone know the number I can call and actually speak to someone in the irs? I filed on 1/23. Still no refund. Need answers now. Been checking WMR daily. Status hasn't changed in weeks.

There are a few ways to reach the IRS: • Main IRS number: 800-829-1040 (7am-7pm local time) • Refund hotline: 800-829-1954 (automated) • Tax advocate service: 877-777-4778 (if you're experiencing hardship) But be prepared for long wait times. Early mornings tend to be better. Have all your info ready when you call.

Have you tried using the IRS2Go app? Sometimes it shows more detailed status than the website. I've also had luck checking the official IRS refund status page at https://www.irs.gov/refunds which sometimes updates before the phone system does.

Tbh the regular IRS number is basically useless rn. Been there, done that. Spent 3 hrs on hold last week and got disconnected. Friend told me about Claimyr.com and it was a game-changer. They call the IRS for you and connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me HOURS of hold time. Here's their link: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. Worth every penny during tax season when everyone's calling.

I'm quite impressed with the information shared here. According to IRS Publication 5027, the normal processing time for e-filed returns is 21 days, but Section 6.1 of the Internal Revenue Manual notes that during peak filing season, this timeline may be extended without notification to the taxpayer. Since you filed on January 23rd, which was early in the filing season, your return may be subject to additional verification procedures as outlined in Revenue Procedure 2023-5.

Have you checked your tax transcript yet? It often shows processing details that WMR doesn't display. You might want to try taxr.ai to analyze your transcript - it explains all those confusing codes and gives you a much clearer picture of where your return stands in the process. It helped me understand why my refund was delayed last year when I was in a similar situation.

Is taxr.ai really better than just looking at the transcript yourself? I've always just Googled the codes when I need to understand them.

I'm wondering if you claimed any tax credits this year? Some credits like the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit can delay processing significantly, and I believe there might be different phone numbers depending on your specific situation?

I've called the IRS exactly 14 times this tax season. The best time to call is Tuesday at 8:03 AM Eastern Time. Wait times average 27 minutes then versus 97 minutes during peak hours. Press 1, then 2, then 1, then 3, then don't enter your SSN, and wait. This bypasses several automated menus. Success rate: 78% for me.

Calling the IRS is like trying to win the lottery while swimming upstream. Does this sequence really work consistently? Last time I tried calling, I felt like I was trapped in one of those nightmares where you're running but not moving anywhere.

The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service can also help if you filed on January 23rd and it's now April 11th - that's 78 days which exceeds their normal processing timeline. Call them at 877-777-4778 if you're facing financial hardship due to your delayed refund. Their office opens at 7:00 AM local time, and they typically have shorter wait times than the main IRS line.

How exactly do you qualify for the Taxpayer Advocate Service? Do you need to prove financial hardship or is just waiting this long enough?

This reminds me of my situation last year when my return was delayed for almost 3 months. The Taxpayer Advocate was more helpful than the regular IRS line, but they still couldn't speed up my processing. It's like comparing a slightly efficient DMV to a completely inefficient one.

I'm so stressed about my refund! Do they actually help get your money faster or just give you more information? I really need this refund to pay some bills that are already overdue! 😫

I was in your exact situation. Filed Jan 25th. Called the Practitioner Priority Line at 866-860-4259 and told them I was calling on behalf of a client (me). Got through in 15 minutes. Agent explained my return was flagged for income verification. Got my deposit 8 days later. Sometimes you need to be creative.
