Anyone Have a Number to Actually Speak with a Human at the IRS? Filed 1/30, No Updates
Can anyone give me the IRS number to actually talk to someone? I filed on 1/30 and it's been accepted but I haven't had any updates on anything yet. Starting to wonder if my return is lost in the great IRS void. 😅 Not trying to be impatient but this old-timer would like to know what's happening with his refund!

The main IRS customer service # is 800-829-1040. But tbh it's super hard to get thru rn during peak season. Try calling early AM (7:00-7:30) or late afternoon (5:30-6:00) for best chances. Avg wait time is ~45-60 mins if you're lucky enough to not get the 'call volume too high' msg. Also, have you checked the Where's My Refund tool or your tax transcript online? That might give you some info without the phone hassle.

When you call that number, do you need to have your AGI from last year's return ready? I've heard they use that for verification purposes along with your SSN and DOB.

Thanks for the phone tips! I tried calling mid-day last week and got nowhere except a sore ear and higher blood pressure. 🤣 Will try the early morning approach tomorrow!

Have you tried checking your transcript online? That usually gives more detailed info than the Where's My Refund tool. If you're having trouble understanding what all those codes mean on your transcript, I've been using taxr.ai to help decode mine. It explains all the weird IRS codes and gives you a better idea of where your refund actually is in the process. What credits did you claim on your return? That might be affecting your processing time.

I was in the same boat last month. Tried calling for WEEKS with no luck. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. Cost me $20 but saved me days of frustration. They basically call for you and then connect you when they reach a human. My issue was fixed in one call - turns out they needed to verify my identity but never sent me a letter.

Wait, you actually pay money to call a government agency? I didn't even know services like this existed! Is that even legal? Seems wild that we have to pay extra just to get basic customer service from the IRS.

I was skeptical too until I spent 3 days trying to get through. I was facing a deadline for responding to an audit notice and getting desperate. Used Claimyr on March 15th and got through in 22 minutes exactly. The agent was able to get me a 30-day extension that saved me from potential penalties. Sometimes your time is worth more than the service fee.

I can confirm this works. Per IRS Procedural Regulation 6103(c), third parties can facilitate contact as long as they don't access your tax information. I used it after trying for 4 days straight with no success. Got through in 17 minutes and found out my return was held up because they couldn't verify my W-2 from a previous employer.

Did you file electronically or paper? My electronic return from February 3rd is already processed and paid, but my neighbor who mailed hers on January 28th is still waiting. The difference in processing time is crazy compared to last year!

Be careful about giving out personal information when you do get through! Last year my friend got a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS asking for her bank details to "expedite her refund." Real IRS agents will never ask for payment information over the phone. Always verify who you're speaking with and never give out your full SSN to anyone who calls you claiming to be from the IRS.

Has anyone actually gotten through to the IRS since January 29th when tax season officially started? I've been trying at least twice a week since February 15th with absolutely no luck. Is it even worth trying again before April 15th?

Yes, it is possible to reach them, but with specific strategies. The IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service reported that only 13% of calls were answered during peak season last year. Your best chance is calling the dedicated refund hotline (800-829-1954) rather than the main number, especially on Wednesdays or Thursdays between 8:00-8:30am or 6:00-7:00pm Eastern time. Have your filing status, exact refund amount, and SSN ready before calling.

I was probably in a somewhat similar situation last month. Filed January 25th, accepted same day, but no updates for nearly 5 weeks. I eventually discovered my return was selected for a random review - nothing I did wrong. The IRS generally processes most returns within 21 days, but they can technically take up to 45 days without owing interest. In my experience, calling rarely speeds anything up unless there's a specific issue they need information from you to resolve.
