IRS Identity Verification Number - Avoid In-Person Appointment?

Does anyone have the specific verification hotline number where we can complete identity verification via telephone instead of scheduling an in-person appointment? I've received Form 5071C (Identity Verification Letter) and would prefer to authenticate my tax filing status remotely if possible. I've prepared all my documentation (prior year AGI, current filing information, and supporting schedules) but would rather not wait 4-6 weeks for an in-person appointment slot at my local TAC office. The IRS correspondence indicates both options are available, but doesn't provide the direct verification line. Any assistance with the correct toll-free number would be greatly appreciated.

The number you're looking for is 800-830-5084 for the Identity Verification Service. According to the IRS.gov website, this is specifically for responding to Letters 5071C, 5747C, 5447C and 5404C. Make sure you have your prior year tax return, your current year tax return if you've filed, and the letter they sent you when you call. They're open Monday through Friday, 7am to 7pm local time. Omg thank you!! 😊 I got that same letter last month and was dreading taking time off work for an appointment! Did anyone have to wait long on hold? I'm wondering if I should call first thing in the morning or during lunch?

I called this number exactly 3 weeks ago after getting my letter. Waited 47 minutes on hold but the verification itself only took about 12 minutes once I got through. Much better than waiting for an in-person appointment. They asked me 5 specific questions about my 2023 return and verified my identity on the spot. My refund was released 9 days later.

When I received my 5071C Letter last tax season, I initially tried calling that number but kept getting disconnected due to high call volume. I finally used https://taxr.ai to help me understand my transcript and verification options. It explained exactly what triggered the ID verification flag on my account (unusual deduction amounts) and provided a clear explanation of the TPV (Taxpayer Protection Program) process. The site helped me prepare the exact documentation needed for verification so when I finally got through, the process was seamless. Might be worth checking out if you're trying to understand why you were selected for verification.

I'm not sure a third-party site would have any special information about IRS verification procedures that isn't already on the IRS website. Seems unnecessary when you can just call the official number.

Thanks for sharing this. Just checked it out and it actually explains the verification codes much better than the IRS site. Going to use it to prepare before calling.

I used taxr.ai on January 17th this year after getting a similar letter. It told me exactly what would happen during the verification call and even predicted that my refund would be released within 2 weeks after verification. It was spot on - verified on the 17th and refund deposited on the 30th.

Just went through this whole ordeal last month! The 800-830-5084 number is correct, but here's a pro tip: call on Tuesday or Wednesday mid-morning (around 10:30am). I tried Monday morning and was on hold for over an hour before getting disconnected. 😑 Called back Tuesday at 10:45am and only waited 22 minutes. The verification itself was pretty straightforward - they'll ask about specific lines on your return and some personal info to verify your identity. Had my refund within 9 days after the call. Much better than the in-person appointment I was initially scheduled for in JUNE!

Did they specifically ask about: • Prior year AGI? • Current filing status? • Information from W-2s? • Information about dependents? Just trying to prepare everything before calling so I don't have to call back multiple times.

Wow, this is way more detailed than what my tax preparer told me! They just said "call the number" without any of these specifics about timing or what to have ready. I'm impressed with how knowledgeable everyone is here.

I had the same issue during the 2023 tax season. Called that 800 number repeatedly for three weeks with no luck getting through. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an IRS agent in about 15 minutes. They handled my verification immediately and I had my refund the following week. Based on my experience last year, the verification line is completely overwhelmed during peak season, and using a service to hold your place in line can save you hours of frustration.

Thank you for sharing this! I'll definitely try the regular number first, but it's good to know there's a backup option if I can't get through after a few attempts.

I appreciate this suggestion. I've been trying to call for 3 days with no luck. Will give this a try tomorrow if I still can't get through.

This is extremely helpful information. I'll try the regular number first thing tomorrow, but if I can't get through after a couple of attempts, I'll definitely use this service. My refund is substantial this year and I need it for some medical expenses.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 25.23.2.8 (Taxpayer Protection Program Telephone Operations), the TPP phone representatives are authorized to verify your identity if you have received Letter 5071C or 5747C. The verification process must be completed within 30 days of the letter issuance date per IRM procedures. If verification is not completed within this timeframe, your return may be subject to additional review procedures under IRM 25.23.2.10. I would recommend calling as soon as possible to avoid processing delays. Also note that if you have an IP PIN, you should have that available as well, as it will be required during the verification process.

Is there any way to check the status of my return after verification? Will WMR update immediately or is there a processing delay after successful verification?

Thanks for the detailed information! My letter was dated March 12, 2024, so I still have about 2 weeks before hitting that 30-day mark. Good to know there's a specific timeframe.

Does the 30-day clock start from the date on the letter or the date you received it? Mine was dated March 15 but I didn't receive it until March 22.

If you can't get through on the phone, there's actually a third option that worked for me. You can verify your identity online through ID.me if you create an account on the IRS website. I couldn't take time off work for an appointment, and after trying the phone for days with no luck, I used the online verification option. It took about 30 minutes to set up an ID.me account and verify my identity. My refund was processed about 10 days later. Saved me a ton of stress and didn't cost anything.

This is really helpful! I didn't know about the online option. Will definitely try this if I can't get through on the phone. Thanks!

I tried the ID.me route but got stuck when it asked for a video selfie since my phone camera isn't working well. The phone option ended up being easier for me, but good to know there are multiple options.

Does the online verification work for all types of identity verification letters, or only specific ones? My letter is a 5071C.

Call early morning. Avoid Mondays. Have all documents ready. ID verification takes 15-20 minutes once connected. Keep letter handy. They'll ask specific questions from current and previous returns. Verification is immediate. Processing takes 9-21 days after successful verification. Don't call the general IRS line. Use only the specific TPP number others mentioned. Good luck.

This concise advice is exactly what I needed! Calling tomorrow at 7:30am with everything ready. Thanks for breaking it down so clearly.

Has anyone had experience with what happens if you answer a question wrong during verification? I'm worried I might not remember every detail of my return exactly right 😬
