IRS Identity Verification Letter Never Arrived - What Now?

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with my IRS identity verification. I was supposed to get a letter with a code, but it never showed up at my address. Now I can't verify my identity and I'm stuck. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on what to do next?

Ugh, been there done that. The IRS is such a mess these days. Have you tried calling them? Sometimes they can help you over the phone.

I haven't called yet, but I'm worried they won't be able to give me the code over the phone. Do you think they might have other ways to verify my identity?

They probably won't give you the code directly, but they might have some alternatives. When I called, they asked me a bunch of personal questions to verify my identity. It's worth a shot!

Yeah, don't expect them to just hand over the code. Security and all that jazz. But they def have other ways to check who you are. Good luck with the call, OP!

Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the IRS directly. The number should be on their website. 2. Explain that you never received the identity verification letter. 3. Ask if there are alternative ways to verify your identity. 4. Be prepared to answer detailed questions about your personal and financial history. 5. If they can't help over the phone, request that they resend the letter to your current address. 6. Make sure your address is up to date in their system. 7. If all else fails, you might need to visit a local IRS office in person. Remember, patience is key when dealing with the IRS. It might take some time, but keep at it. Good luck!

Have you checked if the letter was sent to an old address? Sometimes they use outdated info.

I didn't even think of that! I'll double-check with them about the address they have on file. Thanks for the tip!

Hey guys, I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

I was skeptical at first too, but I tried it and it actually worked. Saved me hours of hold time.

How long did you have to wait before they connected you?

It took about 2 hours total, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They just called me when an agent was on the line.

Pro tip: If you can't get through on the phone, try reaching out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help push things along.

I've never heard of the Taxpayer Advocate Service before. How do I contact them?

You can find their contact info on the IRS website. They're like the customer service superheroes of the tax world πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ

Preach! πŸ™Œ The whole system needs an overhaul.

For real tho. Other countries have way simpler tax systems. We're living in the stone age here πŸ’€

I went through the exact same thing last year! The IRS letter never showed up, and I was panicking about not being able to file my taxes. Here's what worked for me: I called the IRS early in the morning (like 7:30 AM) and got through pretty quickly. They couldn't give me the verification code over the phone, but they were able to verify my identity using other methods - they asked me questions about my previous tax returns, addresses, and some financial info. They then sent a new letter to my current address, which arrived within 10 business days. Make sure you have your Social Security card, driver's license, and last year's tax return handy when you call. Also, double-check that they have your correct mailing address! Good luck - you got this! πŸ’ͺ
