IRS Identity Verification Letter Never Arrived - Can't Access Mailbox. How to Get Refund?
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with my tax refund. I was supposed to verify my identity but I never got the letter in the mail. I don't really have access to my mailbox right now. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any ideas on how to get my refund without that letter?

Ugh, that sucks. I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried calling the IRS directly? They might be able to resend the letter or give you another way to verify your identity.

•I've been trying to call them for weeks but can never get through. It's so frustrating!

•Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 30 minutes on hold that way.

•30 minutes? You got lucky! I was on hold for 3 hours last time I called 😭

Have you considered setting up mail forwarding with USPS? That way you can get your mail sent to wherever you're staying now. Might help with future issues too.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

•Yeah, it actually does! I was skeptical at first too, but I got through to an agent in about an hour without having to sit by my phone the whole time.

•$20 seems steep just to make a phone call 🤔

•I get that, but for me it was worth it to not waste a whole day on hold. Time is money, ya know? 💁♂️

Have you checked your online account on the IRS website? Sometimes they post notices there even if you don't get the physical mail.

•I tried that but couldn't log in. Guess I need to verify my identity for that too 🙃

This whole system is so broken. Why can't they just email us important stuff like this? It's 2023 for crying out loud! 🤦♂️

•Security reasons, probably. But yeah, it's a pain in the a**.

Here's what I'd do: 1. Try to set up mail forwarding ASAP 2. Keep calling the IRS (early morning is best) 3. Check if there's a local IRS office you can visit in person 4. See if you can get someone (family/friend) to check your old mailbox 5. If all else fails, consider using a paid service to get through on the phone Don't give up! It's your money and you deserve to get it back. Good luck!

•This is solid advice. I'd add: document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every interaction. It might come in handy later.

Have you considered hiring a tax advocate? They can sometimes work miracles with this stuff.

•I didn't even know that was a thing. How much does something like that usually cost?

•It varies, but some offer free consultations. Might be worth looking into if you're really stuck.
