IRS Identity Verification Letter En Route - Timeline and Next Steps?

Just completed a CP01E Authentication call with the IRS examiner. According to the representative, my identity verification letter was dispatched on March 13th. She advised that if the correspondence doesn't arrive by March 26th, I should initiate a follow-up call. This filing season has been particularly challenging post-divorce with the change in filing status and dependent allocation. Anyone else navigating the identity verification process this year? What should I expect in this letter and what's the typical processing timeline after verification? I'm somewhat familiar with the 5071C letter, but wondering if this might be something different.

I've been through something kind of similar recently. The identity verification letter is probably a 5071C or possibly a 4883C, though it might be something else depending on your specific situation. These letters usually ask you to either verify online through the ID.me process or call a specific verification line. In my experience, it took about 2-3 weeks after verification for my refund to start moving again, but I've heard it can sometimes take up to 9 weeks for some people. The mail can be slow these days, so waiting until the 26th seems reasonable before following up.

Did you have to provide exactly the same information during your verification call as what will be requested in the letter? I'm wondering if I can just complete the verification once I receive the letter in exactly 13 days, or if I should call back after exactly 9 business days if I don't receive it.

I went through this process last year and I'm hesitant to say this, but... sometimes the letters never actually arrive. The IRS told me mine was sent, but it never showed up. I ended up having to call back after waiting about two weeks, and they guided me through verification over the phone. It might be worth calling earlier than the 26th if you're worried.

Wow, I had no idea the identity verification process involved so many technical steps! I'm surprised by the complexity of these verification protocols. When you mentioned ID.me and the different letter types, it made me realize how sophisticated their authentication system has become.

Been through this multiple times. Here's what you need to know: • The letter is almost certainly a 5071C identity verification letter • You can often verify without waiting for the letter at IDverify.irs.gov • Have your prior year tax return handy - they'll ask specific questions from it • Have your current year return information available too • Most verifications are processed within 9 weeks, but many are done in 2-3 weeks • Your transcript will update with a 971 code when verification is complete Divorce-related changes often trigger these verification requirements. It's just a security measure.

Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! I've been waiting since February 15th and just received my verification letter yesterday, March 18th. This timeline makes me feel much better about the whole process.

I had something similar happen last year. The letter came about 10 days after they said it was sent. Just curious - did you try the IDverify.irs.gov route first or did you call them directly? I found the online option worked well for me, but I've heard mixed experiences.

Thx for the info! Went thru ID verify last yr after divorce too. Took exactly 4 wks after verification to get my refund DD. Make sure u have ur DL/state ID ready for the online verification - they'll ask for issue date, exp date, etc. Also needed my cell phone for 2FA. Way easier than waiting on hold!

I had a similar situation last year and waited patiently for the letter... only to find out it was sent to my old address despite me updating everything with the IRS! Can you believe they still use outdated address information sometimes? And why don't they just email these important notices in 2024? I ended up waiting an extra month because of this mixup. Make sure your address is updated everywhere, and maybe even call back before the 26th if you're worried. Why make us wait when our money is on the line, right?

According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.3, identity verification letters should arrive within 5-10 business days after issuance. Have you checked your transcript for TC 570 and 971 codes? These typically indicate verification holds. I've been trying to reach the IRS for a similar issue, but the hold times are ridiculous - I was on hold for 97 minutes yesterday before being disconnected. I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They confirmed my letter was sent to the wrong address and helped me verify over the phone instead. Might be worth trying if you don't receive your letter by the deadline?

This identity verification process is much more streamlined now compared to 2022. Back then, it would take 3-4 months after verification to get a refund. Now most people see movement within 2-3 weeks. Unlike the amended return process, which still takes 6+ months, the identity verification pathway is relatively quick. Similar to how the CP14 notice resolution improved this year, the identity verification process has been optimized as well. If you're coming from a divorce situation like I did, make sure all your personal information matches exactly across all documents.

Can you explain more about what you mean by 'personal information matches exactly'? I recently changed my name back after divorce, but my social security card still has my married name. Would this cause issues?

Thank you for sharing this comparison! I was dreading a months-long wait after reading older posts. It's reassuring to hear the process has improved since 2022.

When you say 'movement within 2-3 weeks,' do you mean seeing updates on the transcript or actually receiving the refund? My transcript has been showing codes 570/971 for weeks now without any change.

I got the verification letter in February. Completed it online immediately. Checked WMR daily. Nothing changed for two weeks. Then suddenly updated to approved. Got my direct deposit three days later. Total time was 16 days from verification to deposit. The online process was simple. Took about 10 minutes. Needed my ID and cell phone. Used ID.me system. Much better than calling.

Did you have to create a new ID.me account? I already have one for VA benefits but I'm not sure if it's the same system or if I'll need to make a new one specifically for the IRS verification?

Thanks for sharing your timeline. I completed my verification about a week ago but haven't seen any updates yet. The IRS agent told me it could take up to 9 weeks, but your experience gives me hope it might be faster. Did your transcript update before WMR showed the approval?
