Got 4883C letter from IRS - Need help validating identity & checking refund status on CP05A line

Hey everyone, I just got a 4883C letter from the IRS and I need to validate my identity. Has anyone gone through this process before? I'm also trying to check the status of my refund through the CP05A line. Any advice on how to handle this situation would be really appreciated!

Ugh, I went through this last year. It's a pain in the butt, but don't worry too much. The 4883C letter is just the IRS being extra careful about identity theft. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the number on the letter (it should be a special verification line) 2. Have your personal info ready (SSN, birth date, etc.) 3. They'll ask you some questions to verify your identity 4. Once verified, they'll process your return As for checking your refund status, you can use the "Where's My Refund?" tool on the IRS website. Just make sure you wait at least 21 days after filing before checking. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is great advice! I'd add that you should also have your previous year's tax return handy when you call. They might ask questions about it.

I tried calling that number for WEEKS and couldnt get through. Any tips on how to actually reach a human?

Yeah, getting through can be tough. I found that calling early in the morning (right when they open) or later in the afternoon (an hour before closing) worked best for me. Also, Tuesdays and Wednesdays seem to be less busy.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/5jrMesbidvI

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks? That's a rip-off. The IRS should make it easier to contact them for free!

I get the skepticism, but it honestly saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny IMO. And yeah, the IRS should definitely improve their system, but until then, this is a solid workaround.

am i the only 1 who thinks its ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get our own money back? 🤔 the whole system is broken af

Quick question - how long did it take for your refund to come through after verifying your identity? I'm in the same boat and wondering how much longer I'll have to wait. 😩

Not OP, but for me it took about 3 weeks after I verified. Hang in there!

Thanks for the info! Guess I'll just have to be patient 😅

Pro tip: If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help push things along if you're facing financial hardship due to the delay.

This! 👆 The Taxpayer Advocate Service saved my butt last year when I was dealing with a similar issue. Definitely worth a shot if you're getting nowhere with the regular IRS channels.

I just went through this exact same process a few months ago! The 4883C letter can be stressful, but it's actually pretty straightforward once you get through to someone. Here's what worked for me: - Call first thing in the morning (8am sharp) - way better chance of getting through - Have your Social Security card, driver's license, and last year's tax return ready - They'll ask you verification questions like previous addresses, employers, etc. - The whole call took about 20 minutes once I got connected For the refund status, definitely use the "Where's My Refund?" tool, but don't panic if it doesn't update right away after verification. Mine took about 2 weeks to show movement, then got my refund about 3 weeks after that. Good luck! You got this! 💪
