IRS Exam Code 420 on Transcript: Head of Household Return with $9,785 Refund Under Review?

I checked my transcript today and I see that my refund has examination code 420 on it from February 21, 2025. Looking at the detailed transcript, it shows my return was filed as Head of Household with 4 exemptions. My AGI is $25,611.00 and taxable income of $3,711.00. No tax due per the return - it literally shows "TAX PER RETURN: 0.00" on the transcript. The transcript contains this information: ** INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED ** EXEMPTIONS: 04 FILING STATUS: Head of Household ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: $25,611.00 TAXABLE INCOME: $3,711.00 TAX PER RETURN: $0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: $0.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: $0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: $0.00 RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER) Apr. 15, 2025 PROCESSING DATE Mar. 10, 2025 In the TRANSACTIONS section, I see: CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION - CYCLE - DATE - AMOUNT 150 Tax return filed - 20250805 - 03-10-2025 - $0.00 70221-437-71266-5 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding - 04-15-2025 - -$37.00 766 Credit to your account - 04-15-2025 - -$3,400.00 768 Earned income credit - 04-15-2025 - -$6,348.00 810 Refund freeze - 03-10-2025 - $0.00 811 Removed refund freeze - 03-10-2025 - $0.00 570 Additional account action pending - 03-10-2025 - $0.00 971 Notice issued - 03-10-2025 - $0.00 971 Notice issued - 03-10-2025 - $0.00 420 Examination of tax return - 02-21-2025 - $0.00 There's code 570 (additional account action pending) and two 971 notices issued on March 10. The refund amount includes my withholding ($37) plus EIC ($6,348) and another credit ($3,400). I see there was a refund freeze code 810 that was removed same day (code 811). Does this mean my return is under audit? Haven't received any notices in the mail yet and the WMR tool still says processing. My refund is pretty important to me this year so I'm getting worried about how long this might take. Anyone seen this before or know what I should expect next?

Shelby Bauman

Yes, unfortunately code 420 means your return is being examined (audited). The code 570 means they've frozen your account until the examination is complete. The 971 codes indicate they've sent you notices - you should receive these in the mail soon explaining what they're reviewing. Typically when there's an EIC claim involved, they might be verifying your eligibility for the credit. This is a pretty standard review process that happens with many EIC claims, especially with Head of Household status. You have a couple options: 1. Wait for the notices and respond with whatever documentation they request 2. Call the IRS examination department directly (the number will be on the notice) 3. You can try calling the general IRS number but expect long wait times These reviews can take 45-120 days depending on how quickly you respond and how backed up they are. I'd recommend gathering documentation that supports your Head of Household status and EIC eligibility now, so you're ready when the notice arrives.

Oh man, this is not what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the explanation though. Do you know if they'll eventually release the refund even while under examination? Or will it be held completely until everything is resolved?

Shelby Bauman

Unfortunately they typically hold the entire refund until the examination is complete. In rare cases they might release a partial refund if only part is being questioned, but with code 570 active, it looks like the full amount is frozen for now.

Same thing happened to me last year. Total nightmare. Took 4 months to get my refund and I had to send in birth certificates, school records, and utility bills to prove my kids lived with me. Good luck 😔

this is why i never claim eic anymore even tho i probably qualify. the hassle aint worth it when they audit you and freeze ur money for months 🙄

Don't listen to profile 6! Always claim what you're legally entitled to. Just keep good records so you can respond quickly if questioned.

When I had this issue last year, I was completely lost trying to figure out what was happening with my return. I finally used taxr.ai and it explained everything in plain English - told me exactly what the codes meant, why my refund was delayed, and what documents I'd need to have ready. Saved me hours of stressing and googling random tax codes! The tool is insanely good! I use it every week to check for updates on my transcript because it translates all that IRS jargon into something I can actually understand. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

Laila Fury

It does WAY more than just read your transcript. You upload your transcript and it analyzes everything - explains all codes, shows expected refund dates, identifies problems, and tells you exactly what actions you should take. It also explains why certain things are happening and what to expect next. Honestly changed my whole tax experience!

WOW this is exactly what I needed!! Just tried it and it immediately explained why my return was selected for review and what documentation I'll need. So much clearer than anything else I've found. Everyone dealing with tax issues needs to know about this tool!!!

Yeah there is a fee, but considering I spent HOURS trying to figure this stuff out on my own (and still didn't understand it), I'd say it's 100% worth it. Plus it helped me identify issues before they became bigger problems.

I had the exact same issue with code 420 last April. Kept checking WMR everyday like a madman but nothing changed for weeks. Finally got fed up and used this calling service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at the IRS instead of waiting on hold forever. The agent explained they needed proof for my dependents and EIC claim. Got the issue resolved in about 20 minutes on the phone and my refund was released two weeks later. Honestly the best money I've ever spent after trying to call the IRS myself for days with no luck. Check them out at claimyr.com if you're tired of waiting.

Yes! Absolutely works. They basically hold your place in line and call you when they have an agent on the phone. Saved me like 2 hours of hold time and frustration. The agent I spoke with was super helpful once I actually got through.

That's exactly why this service exists! The IRS phone system is intentionally difficult (imo) and this just navigates it for you. Seriously, after spending hours redialing and getting hung up on, it was a game changer.

This might be what I need. Did you have to provide any documentation over the phone or did they just tell you what was needed?

They just explained what was happening with my return and told me exactly what documentation to mail in. Having a real person explain everything made such a difference versus trying to decode those vague notices.

Code 420 is basically the IRS saying "we need to take a closer look at your return." Almost always happens with EIC claims, especially with Head of Household filing status. They're cracking down hard on improper EIC claims this year. Make sure you have docs proving your dependents lived with you for more than half the year - school records, medical records, benefit statements, etc. They probably sent you a 566 letter requesting additional info.

0 coins

-

Josef Tearle

I haven't gotten any letters yet. Is there a way to find out what they want before the letter arrives? I'm worried it got lost in the mail.

You can try calling the IRS exam department at 866-897-0177, but be prepared to wait foreverrr. Another option is checking your IRS online account to see if they've posted any notices there. Good luck!

If you qualify for EIC with no dependents this could also be a case of income verification. They'll be looking at your W2s and 1099s to make sure income was reported correctly.

Don't panic! The IRS does random reviews all the time, and they flag TONS of EIC claims for verification. It doesn't mean you did anything wrong. Just gather your documentation now so you're ready when they ask. Last year they verified my EIC and it took about 8 weeks total before my refund was released.

I've been through this 2 years in a row. 🙄 Their system flags returns with EIC and head of household for extra scrutiny. Make sure you have proof that your dependents lived with you for more than half the year. The IRS loves school records, medical bills, benefit statements showing your address and kids names. Anything official with both your address and their names on it. It's annoying but if you have the right docs it's just a matter of waiting.

The IRS is absolutely TERRIBLE at this. I had my return held for 6 months last year for "verification" that my kids were mine. I sent birth certificates and they still wanted more proof! Utterly ridiculous.

I feel you. They made me submit the same documents three different times because they "couldn't locate" the ones I already sent. The system is completely broken.

This is why i always file paper returns. Electronic returns get more flags and reviews. I know it takes longer initially but at least i don't deal with this audit nonsense every year.

0 coins

-

Ally Tailer

That's actually not true. Paper returns have higher error rates and are MORE likely to be reviewed or have problems. The IRS even says electronic filing is preferred.

maybe thats what they want u to think... but ive been filing paper for 15 years and never once been audited. my sister files electronic every year and gets reviewed constantly. just saying 🤷‍♂️

That's just anecdotal evidence. The real difference is probably your tax situations, not how you file. The method of filing doesn't impact audit selection criteria.

the codes on ur transcript tell a story: 150 (return filed) -> 806/766/768 (credits/refund calculated) -> 810/811 (temp freeze that was removed) -> 420/570/971 (examination started, refund frozen, notices sent). basically they started to process ur refund normally, then their system flagged something that needed review. most common reason = EIC verification.

I worked for the IRS for 12 years (retired now). Code 420 means they're reviewing your return, specifically for the earned income credit based on your transcript. They're probably verifying that you qualify for head of household and that your dependents meet the requirements for EIC. The 570 means they've frozen your refund until the review is complete. You'll get a letter (that's what the 971 codes are) asking for specific documentation. Answer EXACTLY what they ask for - no more, no less. If you send too much info it can actually delay things more.

Thank you so much for this insider perspective! Do you know if these reviews usually result in reduced refunds? Or if everything checks out will I get the full amount?

0 coins

-

16d

Cass Green

If your documentation supports your claims, you'll get your full refund. They're just verifying eligibility, not looking to reduce it. Just make sure you respond promptly with exactly what they request. Good luck!

lmao welcome to tax season hell 2023 edition. the IRS is so underfunded and understaffed they're just throwing darts at a board to decide which returns to review 🤡

they're definitely not throwing darts. EIC has the highest improper payment rate of any tax credit, so they review those claims more carefully. it's actually strategic

Have you tried checking the Where's My Refund tool on irs.gov? Sometimes it will give you more specific info than the transcript codes.

Yeah it just says "still processing" and has said that for weeks. The transcript has way more detail but I'm not sure how to interpret all these codes.

Just fyi, code 971 means notices were GENERATED, not necessarily sent yet. So you might not receive them for another week or so. The IRS is notoriously slow with mail.

Can't believe no one has said this yet but check the USPS Informed Delivery service if you have it! You can see what mail is coming to you before it arrives. Might give you a heads up on those IRS notices before they hit your mailbox.

Let me tell u from experience... calling the IRS is a complete WASTE of time unless u can actually get through to someone. I spent 3 weeks trying to call about my audit last year and never got through. Finally broke down and used claimyr.com and had an agent on the phone in 2 hours. They got me straight to the examination department who explained exactly what was happening with my return. Talking to an actual agent got my refund released within days. Without that I'd probably still be waiting lol.

Just a heads up - I had a similar situation last year with EIC verification. When you do get the notice, respond ASAP and send EVERYTHING they ask for the first time. Don't make them ask twice or it will drag on forever. I sent my docs certified mail with tracking and kept copies of everything. Got my refund about 60 days after I responded to their request.

I've been an enrolled agent for 15 years and see this alllll the time with my clients. Code 420 is an examination (audit) indicator. Combined with 570, it means they're reviewing your return and have frozen your refund pending the outcome. Based on your filing status (HOH) and the EIC claim, they're almost certainly verifying your eligibility for both. This is extremely common - the IRS has been directed by Congress to thoroughly verify EIC claims due to historically high improper payment rates. Wait for the notice (971 code indicates it's coming) and respond promptly with exactly the documentation requested. Most of these reviews are resolved in favor of the taxpayer as long as you can provide the required proof. In the meantime, you can call the IRS exam department, but be prepared for long wait times. Good luck!
