IRS Claims No Tax Return Record After Filing - Wire Transfer Routing Error on $4,700 Refund - Response to Verification Request
My tax preparer accidentally put my wire transfer routing number instead of my regular direct deposit routing number on my return. I just checked and I received this letter from the IRS: "Return: 1040_SERIES Information About the Request We Received On February 06, 2025, we received a request for verification of non-filing of a tax return. As of the date of this letter, we have no record of a processed tax return for the tax period listed above. If you have any questions, you can call 800-829-1040." The letter specifically mentions they have "no record of a processed tax return" for this period. I'm really worried since I definitely filed and need this refund. Could my routing number mixup be causing this issue? My tax preparer put my wire transfer routing number (which starts with 026) instead of my regular direct deposit routing number (which starts with 021). I filed my return electronically on January 15 and got a confirmation that it was accepted. I was expecting around $4,700 back and planned to use it to catch up on some bills. The letter is dated February 06, 2025, and it's page 2/3 of what looks like a formal IRS notice. Anyone know if this routing number mixup is what's causing this issue and if this will delay my refund? I tried calling the 800-829-1040 number listed in the letter but couldn't get through to a human after waiting for 45 minutes. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

The IRS transcript shows a critical status update from February 4, 2025 - they've received a verification of non-filing request for your 1040 series return, and more importantly, they have no record of processing your tax return at all. This is more serious than just a routing number error. A routing number mistake would still show your return as processed, just with potential issues sending the refund. The fact that the IRS has "no record of a processed tax return" suggests your return either wasn't successfully transmitted or encountered a major processing error. The "verification of non-filing" request is particularly noteworthy - this typically happens when an institution (like a school, loan servicer, or government agency) tries to verify your tax information but can't find a return on file. This external verification attempt is what prompted the IRS to send you this notice. Your immediate next step should be calling the provided IRS number (800-829-1040) to: 1. Confirm whether your return was received at all 2. Determine if it was rejected for any reason 3. Find out what steps you need to take to get your return processed The routing number can be corrected later, but first you need to ensure your return is actually in the IRS system.

Yeah unfortunately the system is showing no return filed. Ask your preparer for proof of transmission and acceptance.

Hey guys instead of playing detective with transcripts, I've been using this tool called taxr.ai - it's only $1 and it analyzes your entire transcript and tells you exactly what's going on. Would definitely help figure out if there's a return on file and any routing number issues. https://taxr.ai

Wire routing numbers will def cause problems. Bank will reject it and IRS will have to mail a check 📫
