ID Verification in Person - 9 Week Wait Time? How Often Should I Check Transcript?

Went in person today to verify my identity for my tax return. They're telling me it could take 9 weeks to process. šŸ™ƒ (Because nothing says efficiency like waiting two months after already waiting in line for hours, am I right?) How quick was the turnaround for those who've been through this? How often do they typically update the system? And when should I start obsessively checking my transcript? I run a small shop and was really counting on this refund sooner rather than later...

Tbh the 9 wks is just their CYA timeline. Most ppl I know (incl myself) got processed WAY faster. My ID verify took ~3 wks last yr, but I've seen others get it in 10-14 days. Transcripts usually update overnight Thurs-Fri, so that's when u wanna check. The WMR tool is basically useless compared to transcript updates. Just sayin'.

9 weeks? Are they living in the stone age? I had to verify in person last year and kept asking myself why they couldn't just do this online like a normal organization. But surprisingly, mine only took about 18 days before I saw movement on my transcript. Still felt like forever though.

I verified my identity on March 12th, 2024 and saw my transcript update on March 29th, 2024. Exactly 17 days. My refund hit my account on April 3rd, 2024. The IRS always gives these ridiculous timeframes but it's usually much faster in my experience.

I've been through this twice. They always say 9 weeks. Mine took 22 days the first time and 17 days the second time. Check your transcript every Friday morning. That's when updates typically post. The Where's My Refund tool lags behind transcript updates by 3-5 days. Don't waste your time checking daily - it won't speed things up and will just drive you crazy.

Thank you for this! I'm in the same boat and was planning to check constantly. Good to know: ā€¢ Fridays are update days ā€¢ Real timeline is 2-3 weeks not 9 ā€¢ Transcript is more reliable than WMR Really appreciate the reality check!

I went through identity verification last month. Here's what to expect: 1. First 7-10 days: No changes whatsoever 2. Days 10-14: Your transcript will likely update with a TC 570 (hold) 3. Days 14-21: You'll see a TC 571 (release of hold) 4. Within 5-7 days after the 571: You'll get a TC 846 (refund issued) The 9-week timeline is their maximum processing time. Most identity verification cases resolve in 3-4 weeks. Check your transcript every Thursday night/Friday morning when the system updates.

This is like having a map when you're lost in the woods! I was in the same situation last month and this is EXACTLY how it played out for me. It's like the IRS is a giant machine that moves at its own pace no matter how much we need our money.

This matches what happened to me. Very accurate timeline. Still frustrating process though. System needs modernization.

Thank you for breaking this down! I had to verify last year and was completely in the dark about what was happening. Wish I'd seen something like this then!

Have you considered just calling them directly to check status? When I was in your situation, I tried the normal IRS number for days with no luck. Then I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 30 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. The agent gave me the exact status and timeline for my case after ID verification. Saved me weeks of anxiety wondering what was happening with my return. Worth it when you're running a business and need to plan your cash flow.

Does this service actually work? I've tried calling the IRS directly multiple times and couldn't get through. Kept getting the "high call volume" message and disconnected. Seems too good to be true that a third-party service could bypass that.

Yep, it rly does work. Used it twice myself. They basically keep dialing for u and hold ur place in line. When they get thru, they call u. Saved me hrs of redial hell. Not cheap but worth it when u need answers ASAP.

Just a word of caution - I would probably check your transcript once a week, maybe twice at most. I've seen several cases where people who verified in person had their returns pulled for manual review afterward, which can add another 4-6 weeks to the process. Not trying to be a downer, but it might be good to prepare for that possibility, especially if you're counting on the funds for your business.

I verified in person on February 28th and had my refund direct deposited on March 18th - exactly 19 days later! According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.3, the normal processing time after identity verification is 9 weeks, but the IRS has been moving much faster on these cases in 2024. Don't wait until the last minute to make financial decisions based on this timeline though - the IRS is notoriously unpredictable.

I had to verify in February. My transcript updated exactly 3 weeks later. It was like watching paint dry compared to my previous returns that processed in 8-10 days. Much better than the 9 weeks they quoted me though. If you compare this to the 2021 tax season when some people waited 6+ months after verification, we're in much better shape now.
