Received "Daily Limit Exceeded" Error After IRS Claims My 2023 Return Was Already Filed - Possible Identity Theft?

Just submitted my 2023 tax return and got this weird message saying my info matches a return thats already been filed? I swear I only filed once and triple checked everything. Now I'm freaking out thinking someone stole my identity or something. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do next? I was trying to check my refund status on the IRS2Go app today at 10:25. I entered my filing status as "Single" for the 2024 tax year (which is the latest available option on the app). After entering my SSN and clicking "Get Status," I got an error message saying "You have exceeded the daily limit on inquiries. Please try again tomorrow." But that's not even the weird part! Before this, when I had tried checking earlier, the system told me my information matches a return that's already been filed. How is that possible? I definitely only filed once and was super careful with all my information. The app has options for Refunds, Payments, Free Tax Help, and Connect at the bottom, but I don't know which one would help with this situation. There's also an "Accessibility" button and "Privacy Notice" link, but neither seems helpful for my problem. Is this error message normal, or should I be concerned that someone has filed a fraudulent return using my information? Has anyone experienced this before? What steps should I take to resolve this and protect myself?

Tax pro here - This is actually pretty common. First thing: dont panic. This could be a few things: 1) System glitch 2) Someone filed fraudulently using your info 3) Your previous tax prep software saved old info. Call the IRS Identity Verification hotline ASAP at 800-830-5084. Also get a copy of your transcript to see if any returns were actually processed.

The best way to actually understand what's happening is to use taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats going on. It costs $4.99 but its worth every penny for peace of mind. Check it out here: https://taxr.ai

Does it actually help? How does it work? Like does it just read the transcript or what

It basically scans your entire transcript and uses AI to explain everything in plain English. Shows if there are any red flags or identity issues too
