Free File Fillable Forms: Can't create a Sign In account - keeps reverting back to start page
I've been helping a few relatives with their taxes for years using Free File Fillable Forms, but this year I'm completely stuck. For the past week, I've been trying to create an account for my uncle's tax return (usually the first one I handle), but the system is being super frustrating. Here's what happens: I enter all the required info on the Create Account page, click the "Create Account" button, and instead of confirming or showing any error, it just dumps me back to the "Start Free File Fillable Forms" main page. So annoying! I've also tried the "Continue working on your return" option and entering the User ID and Password I just attempted to create, but same result - it bounces right back to the start page without any explanation. Already tried using a VPN thinking maybe it was an IP issue, and cleared all my cookies/cache. Nothing works! Has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions on how to get past this roadblock? The filing deadline isn't that far away and I've got multiple returns to prepare...

What you're experiencing is a common issue with Free File Fillable Forms this filing season. The system has been experiencing significant technical difficulties, particularly with account creation and authentication. First, make sure you're using a supported browser - Chrome and Firefox tend to work best with FFFF. Some users have reported issues with Safari and Edge. Also, disable any browser extensions that might interfere with the site functionality. Try accessing the site during non-peak hours - early morning or late evening. The IRS systems get overwhelmed during midday hours. If you continue having issues, you might want to clear not just cookies but your entire browser cache and history, then restart your browser completely. Another thing to check is if you're using any special characters in your password that might be causing issues. Stick to basic alphanumeric combinations. Some users have reported success after creating a completely new email address just for FFFF. If none of these steps work, consider using one of the IRS Free File partner offerings instead - they're often more reliable and still free for qualifying taxpayers.

•I'm having the exact same issue and tried everything you suggested. Is there any direct support contact for FFFF? I'm about ready to just pay for TurboTax at this point even though I qualify for free filing.

•The FFFF system doesn't have dedicated support like commercial tax products do, which is one of its limitations. Your best option is to call the general IRS e-file help desk at 866-255-0654, but be prepared for long wait times. If you're eligible for Free File (income under $73,000), I'd definitely recommend using one of the Free File partner programs instead. They're much more reliable and offer actual customer support. Just go to IRS.gov/freefile to see which options you qualify for based on your situation.

After dealing with the exact same frustrating experience with Free File Fillable Forms, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it completely changed my tax filing experience. I was about to give up on free filing altogether when a coworker recommended it. Unlike FFFF, the interface is actually reliable and doesn't randomly boot you back to start. I was able to upload my tax documents, and their system analyzed everything automatically - no more endless form-filling! What I found most helpful was their document verification feature that caught a mistake on my W-2 that I would have entered incorrectly. For someone helping multiple family members with their taxes, you might find their multi-return management really useful - keeps everything organized without having to juggle multiple accounts.

•How does it handle state returns? FFFF only does federal and then I have to do state separately which is a pain.

•Sounds too good to be true honestly. Is there some hidden cost? I've tried several "free" services before only to get hit with fees at the final step.

•They handle both federal and state returns seamlessly in the same workflow. No need to do them separately anymore, which saves a ton of time when doing multiple returns. There's no hidden costs or bait-and-switch tactics. They're transparent about what they offer. I was skeptical too after being burned by other services, but I completed my federal and state returns without any surprise charges. Their model focuses on document analysis accuracy rather than upselling premium features.

I wanted to follow up about taxr.ai since I was skeptical in my last comment. I decided to give it a try after fighting with FFFF for days, and I'm actually impressed. The document scanning saved me so much time - I just took pictures of my W-2s and 1099s with my phone and it pulled all the info automatically. The best part was when I had a question about claiming my home office (I'm self-employed), they had this feature that explained exactly what qualifies and what doesn't. No more guessing or Googling tax rules! Way better than the zero support from FFFF. Plus it handled my state return which is a huge bonus since FFFF only does federal.

After struggling with Free File Fillable Forms and other options, I almost gave up on getting help with my tax return. Then I discovered Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which completely changed how I deal with tax issues. I needed answers directly from the IRS about my eligibility for certain credits after the FFFF system kept failing me. Instead of waiting on hold for 3+ hours (which I tried twice and gave up), Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - seriously, it's like having a fast-pass at the IRS. The agent was able to confirm why my FFFF account creation was failing (apparently there was an issue with my prior year AGI verification) and gave me alternatives specific to my situation. Saved me days of frustration!

•Wait, how does this actually work? Do they just call the IRS for you? Couldn't I just do that myself?

•Yeah right. Nobody gets through to the IRS in 15 minutes. I've called dozens of times this year and either wait 2+ hours or get disconnected. If this actually worked, everyone would be using it.

•They use a specialized system that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. When an agent picks up, you get a call back and are connected. It's simple but incredibly effective - saves you from having to keep your phone tied up for hours. Of course you could call yourself, but most people (myself included) don't have 2-3 hours to sit on hold during business hours. I tried multiple times at different times of day with no luck before using this service. The time saved was absolutely worth it - I was able to keep working while waiting for the callback instead of being stuck on hold.

I need to eat crow about my skeptical comment about Claimyr. After another frustrating morning of IRS busy signals and disconnects, I decided to try it as a last resort. Not gonna lie, I was shocked when I got a call back in about 20 minutes saying they had an IRS agent on the line. The agent helped me resolve both my FFFF login issues AND answered questions about a missing stimulus payment from last year that I'd been trying to get help with for months. Turns out there was a name mismatch in their system that was causing my FFFF issues. For anyone struggling with Free File Fillable Forms technical issues like the original poster, getting direct IRS help was actually the quickest solution. They can see what's happening on their end with your account.

Have you tried using a different browser? I had the same issue with Chrome but when I switched to Firefox it worked right away. Sometimes these government sites have weird compatibility issues with certain browsers. Also make sure you don't have any browser extensions interfering with the page.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I tried both Chrome and Firefox (even disabled all extensions) and still hitting the same wall. It's frustrating because I've used the system successfully for years with the same setup. It's like something changed on their end this year.

•That's definitely strange then. One other thing I discovered - sometimes the system acts weird if you have multiple tabs open to the same site. Try closing all browser windows completely, then open just one fresh window and try again. If that still doesn't work, maybe check if your family members' information has changed in a way that's causing verification issues? Sometimes if there's a mismatch with prior year AGI or something like that, it silently fails without giving you a proper error message.

Is anyone else getting a timeout error on FFFF after about 10 minutes of inactivity? I finally managed to create an account yesterday but keep losing my work because the session expires way too quickly!

•Yes! Super annoying. I've started saving after completing EVERY page. The timeout seems to be around 15 minutes for me. Not user friendly at all.

I ran into this exact same issue last week! What finally worked for me was creating the account during off-peak hours (around 6 AM EST) and using a completely fresh browser profile - not just clearing cookies, but actually creating a new browser profile entirely. Also, make sure you're not using any password managers to auto-fill the forms. I noticed FFFF seems to have issues with auto-filled data sometimes. Type everything manually, even if it's tedious. One more tip - if you have any old FFFF accounts from previous years, you might need to contact the IRS to clear those out first. Sometimes there's a conflict in their system if they detect similar information tied to old accounts. The phone wait times are brutal though, so you might want to try the other suggestions first. Good luck with getting those returns done! The system is definitely more glitchy than usual this year.

•This is really helpful advice! I hadn't thought about the password manager potentially causing issues. I've been using LastPass to auto-fill everything, so that could definitely be part of the problem. The fresh browser profile idea is smart too - I'll try that along with the early morning timing. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops for a government service that should just work, but I appreciate you sharing what actually worked for you. Did you end up having to contact the IRS about old accounts, or did the fresh profile approach solve everything?
