Is anyone else constantly stuck with 'Saving' MESSAGE on TaxAct during 2025 filing?

I'm going absolutely crazy with TaxAct this year. For the past 3 days, I keep getting stuck on a perpetual "Saving" message that never goes away! I've tried reloading the page, logging out/back in, different browsers, even tried on my wife's laptop. Nothing works! I'm about 75% through my return and I'm terrified of losing all my progress. I've got a bunch of 1099 income plus a W-2 from my part-time job, and I don't want to start over. The message just hangs there forever, and the progress wheel keeps spinning but nothing happens. Has anyone else run into this? Any solutions? Getting pretty desperate as the filing deadline is approaching and I need to get this done!

I've seen this issue before with TaxAct and a few other tax software platforms. This is usually a browser cache/cookie issue or a server connection problem. Try these steps: 1. Clear your browser cache and cookies completely 2. Try using a private/incognito browser window 3. Check your internet connection stability - sometimes intermittent connections cause this 4. If you're using any browser extensions or add-ons, try disabling them temporarily The good news is that TaxAct generally auto-saves your progress even when this message appears, so your data is probably still there. You might also want to check if TaxAct is having any known server issues by checking their social media or support pages.

Thanks for the suggestions! I tried clearing my cache and cookies, but still getting the same issue. The incognito window actually worked for about 10 minutes before getting stuck again. Do you think I should just wait a day or two before trying again? I'm worried about my data getting corrupted.

Waiting a day might help if it's a server-side issue with TaxAct. Their systems might be overloaded as we get closer to the filing deadline. Your data should be fine - in my experience, these tax platforms save information as you go through each section, even if the visual "saving" indicator gets stuck. Try contacting their customer support directly. They might have a known issue they're working on or could help reset something on your account. If you're really concerned about losing data, you could also try taking screenshots of your entries as a backup.

After dealing with the exact same issue on TaxAct last week, I finally gave up and tried using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) instead. It was like night and day difference! I uploaded my tax documents and it not only extracted all the info automatically but it didn't freeze or get stuck on any "saving" messages. The interface is so much smoother than TaxAct. What I really liked was that it showed me exactly which deductions I qualified for based on my documents rather than making me answer a million questions. Saved me hours of frustration compared to fighting with TaxAct's constant saving loops.

Does it handle complex tax situations? I've got rental income, some stock trades, and a small business. That's why I've stuck with TaxAct despite the issues - I'm worried other options might not handle everything.

How much does it cost though? I've been using TaxAct because it's cheaper than some of the other options. If I'm already halfway through my return, is it worth switching?

It actually handles complex situations really well. I have a side business with a Schedule C plus some investment income, and it organized everything correctly. The document recognition is what impressed me most - it pulled all the numbers from my forms without me having to enter anything manually. As for the cost question, I found it to be worth every penny for the time saved alone. And yes, even if you're halfway through, I think it's worth switching rather than fighting with a system that keeps freezing. You'll probably finish faster starting fresh with taxr.ai than continuing to battle TaxAct's saving issues.

Just wanted to update everyone. After seeing the recommendation for taxr.ai, I decided to give it a try since I was still stuck with the TaxAct saving issue. I was honestly blown away! Uploaded my documents and within minutes it had extracted all my information correctly. No more endless "saving" messages or freezing pages. What really surprised me was how it caught a home office deduction I was eligible for that I completely missed in TaxAct. The whole process was so much smoother, and I actually finished my return in one sitting instead of the multi-day struggle I was having before. Definitely making the switch permanent next year.

If you're still having TaxAct issues and need to talk to someone at the IRS about any tax questions (especially if you're getting close to the deadline), I highly recommend Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was trying to verify some information about my filing status after having similar software issues, and was dreading the famous 3+ hour hold times with the IRS. Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. It was seriously a game-changer when I needed to verify how to handle some information that TaxAct kept giving me errors about.

Wait, how exactly does this work? I don't understand how any service could get you through to the IRS faster than calling them directly. Does it use some special number or something?

Yeah right. Nothing gets you through to the IRS faster. I've literally spent 5+ hours on hold before. This sounds like a scam that just takes your money and gives you the regular IRS number. No way this actually works.

It uses a combination of technology that navigates the IRS phone tree and holds your place in line. Basically, they call and wait on hold instead of you, then call you when they reach an agent. It's all explained in that video I linked. No special phone number - they're just using the same IRS lines everyone else uses, but their system waits on hold so you don't have to. They only call you when there's an actual agent ready to talk. I was skeptical too until I tried it and was talking to someone at the IRS in minutes instead of hours.

I need to eat crow here. After posting my skeptical comment earlier, I was still having issues with TaxAct and needed to ask the IRS a question about my 1099-NEC reporting. Decided I had nothing to lose and tried Claimyr. I'm honestly shocked - it actually worked exactly as described. Got a call back in about 20 minutes saying they had an IRS agent on the line. Saved me from spending my entire afternoon on hold. The agent was able to clarify my reporting question in just a few minutes. Completely worth it for the time saved alone. I'm still having TaxAct saving issues, but at least now I have my tax questions answered and can try some of the other suggestions in this thread.

Have you tried using a different tax software entirely? I gave up on TaxAct two years ago after similar issues and switched to FreeTaxUSA. It's much more reliable and I haven't had any saving issues with it. Plus it's cheaper than TaxAct for most situations.

I'm definitely open to switching at this point! Have you found FreeTaxUSA to be fairly straightforward to use? And does it handle things like investment income and home office deductions well?

FreeTaxUSA is super straightforward! The interface isn't as flashy as some others, but it's reliable and doesn't freeze up. It handles all those things well - I have investment income, a small side business, and claim home office deductions too. The questions are clearly worded and it walks you through everything step by step. The best part is that you only pay when you file state taxes (federal is free), and even then it's much cheaper than most competitors. Definitely worth trying if you're fed up with TaxAct!

I'm having the exact same issue with TaxAct! Did you try calling their customer support? I was on hold for 45 minutes yesterday and then got disconnected. I'm thinking about just switching to a different software at this point.

I tried calling yesterday too and also got disconnected after waiting forever. Super frustrating! Based on the suggestions here, I'm actually going to try switching. Seems like several people have had better luck with alternatives. I'll let you know how it goes!

I had a similar issue with TaxAct last year and found that it was actually related to my internet connection stability. Even though my connection seemed fine for browsing, tax software requires a more consistent connection for the constant auto-saving features. Try using a wired ethernet connection instead of WiFi if possible, or test from a different location with a different internet provider (maybe a friend's house or local library). Sometimes switching to mobile hotspot can help identify if it's an ISP-specific issue. Also, make sure you're not running other bandwidth-heavy applications while using TaxAct. I found that streaming services or large downloads in the background can interfere with the saving process even when the internet seems fast enough.

That's a really good point about the internet connection! I never thought about how tax software might need more stable connectivity than regular browsing. I've been using WiFi this whole time and do have Netflix running in the background usually. Going to try the ethernet cable approach and see if that helps before I completely give up on TaxAct. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've been dealing with this exact same TaxAct saving issue for the past week! What finally worked for me was a combination of things: first, I switched to using Microsoft Edge instead of Chrome (apparently some tax sites work better with Edge), then I made sure to disable all browser extensions, and most importantly - I found that the saving issue happens less frequently if you manually save your progress every few minutes by clicking on a different section and then coming back. Also, if you're worried about losing your data, TaxAct actually keeps multiple backup copies. You can access previous versions by going to "My Account" and looking for "Restore Previous Version" - this saved me when I thought I lost everything last Tuesday. The system usually auto-saves even when the visual indicator gets stuck, but having that backup option gave me peace of mind. One more tip: try working on your return during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening). I noticed the saving issues were much worse during typical work hours when their servers are probably getting hammered by everyone trying to file before the deadline.

These are really comprehensive suggestions! I'm particularly interested in the Microsoft Edge tip - I've been using Chrome this whole time and never thought the browser choice might make a difference for tax software. The manual saving by switching sections is clever too. Quick question - when you say "off-peak hours," what time range worked best for you? I've been trying to work on this mostly in the evenings around 7-9pm, but maybe that's still too busy? I might try getting up early tomorrow and tackling it around 6am before everyone else is online. Also super helpful to know about the "Restore Previous Version" feature - that definitely gives me more confidence to keep trying with TaxAct instead of starting over somewhere else!
