Filed early February, IRS claims they mailed a letter but never received it - now stuck in endless waiting game
I submitted my return on February 5th and it was accepted February 6th. WMR showed a message that a letter was being sent to my address but I never received anything. I called the IRS on March 15th and the rep told me she was sending out another letter that day and if I didn't receive it by April 1st to call back. This waiting game is ridiculous and I'm getting so frustrated. It's mid-April now and still nothing! Just want my refund at this point... seems like my return is stuck in limbo.

Your refund is likely being held because the IRS suspects potential identity theft or needs to verify certain information. Here's what you should do: • Call the IRS again at 1-800-829-1040 and explain you've been waiting for multiple letters that never arrived • Check your address is correct in their system • Request they verify your identity over the phone if possible • Ask specifically what information they need from you • Check your transcript online at irs.gov to see any codes that might explain the hold • Sometimes they place a 570 code (refund hold) followed by a 971 (notice issued) Make sure your mail isn't being intercepted or sent to an old address. Unfortunately, this happens a lot during tax season - they're overwhelmed and letters get lost or delayed.

Thanks for the detailed response. I have tried calling again but keep getting the "due to high call volume" message and they hang up. My address is definitely correct. I'll check my transcript.

Good luck getting through to the IRS by phone 🤣 I spent 6 hours on hold last month and then got disconnected!

I had the EXACT same situation last year. Turned out there was a mismatch on my AGI from previous year that triggered fraud protection. Finally got it sorted after 3 months 😑

Yeah getting through is the hardest part. Try calling right when they open (7am EST). Or use Claimyr.com - it holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of waiting.

What's this Claimyr thing? Never heard of it but willing to try anything at this point tbh

It's a service that navigates the IRS phone tree for you and calls you when there's an actual human ready to talk. Not free but worth every penny to not waste your whole day on hold.

You know what's crazy? I was in the same exact situation last month and was going insane trying to figure out what was happening with my return. My transcript had all these weird codes I couldn't understand. Then someone recommended taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly why my refund was held up (turns out there was a discrepancy in reported income). Way better than trying to piece things together from random reddit posts or spending hours on the phone. You should check it out at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It explains what every code means in plain English, tells you exactly why your refund is delayed, what steps you need to take, and gives you a timeline of what's happening. It even told me what specific form I needed to submit to fix my issue. Honestly saved me weeks of stress and confusion. Best tax tool I've found in years.

I get the skepticism - I was hesitant too. The difference is this one actually delivers what it promises. It's like having an IRS insider interpret everything for you. My refund got released 2 weeks after I followed the steps it recommended. No more guesswork or anxiety.

After dealing with the same thing (filed early, told letter was sent, never got it, etc.), I finally got frustrated enough to try a calling service called Claimyr. Got me connected to an IRS agent in about 45 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was wrong (they needed more verification for my dependents) and I was able to fax the documents they needed that same day. Refund showed up a week later. Worth checking out at claimyr.com if you're as frustrated as I was.

Yeah I get why it sounds sketchy but it's legit. All it does is navigate the phone system and waits on hold for you. When an agent actually answers, it calls your phone and connects you. Talking to a real person solved my problem in minutes after weeks of frustration.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? The IRS phone system is literally designed to make people give up lol

I know right? The system is totally designed to wear you down. But this actually works - it just automates the hold process so you don't have to sit there listening to the same terrible music for 3 hours. Talking to an agent was what finally broke my logjam.

this happened to my sister last year. turns out they had a wrong address for her even tho she thought she updated it. make sure ur address is correct with them, u might need to fill out form 8822 to update it. also check ur transcript if u can, it will show if they actually sent any notices and what codes are on ur account.

The IRS is a joke. Their "letter" is probably sitting in some pile somewhere or never got printed at all. They're so understaffed and underfunded that basic things like sending mail fail constantly. I bet if you wait another month they'll just release your refund without ever getting the letter to you. That's what happened to me.

Nah don't listen to this advice. If they need verification and you ignore it, they'll just adjust your return and you could lose credits or deductions. Better to be proactive.

Ok smartypants, how exactly is OP supposed to be "proactive" about a letter they never received? 🙄

By calling like they already did and asking specifically what info they need or what's holding up the return. By checking their transcript. By using tools like taxr.ai that can tell you exactly what's happening. There's plenty you can do besides just waiting.

Hate to break it to ya but ur probably looking at a 60-120 day wait from when u called. thats how long it took for me. they say theyll mail something but half the time they dont. if u want faster service u need to call an actual human at the IRS and find out exactly whats going on.

Call them. Seriously. Stop waiting and call. Use a service like claimyr.com if u have trouble getting thru. i waited for 3 months like an idiot before calling and found out they needed one simple form from me.

Could be anything - identity verification, income verification, EIC audit, random review... without knowing what specific letter they were trying to send, it's impossible to know. When you called, did they tell you WHY they were sending a letter?

Jay Lincoln
No, they just said they were sending another letter but wouldn't tell me what it was about. Something about security protocols not letting them disclose that over the phone. Which makes zero sense.

Classic IRS. "We can't tell you what we need from you, but we need something from you." 🤡 Try checking your transcript online - it might have codes that explain what's happening.

There's a tool called taxr.ai that breaks down all the transcript codes and explains exactly what's happening with your return. Much easier than trying to decipher it yourself. https://taxr.ai

Have you tried checking your transcript? Log into irs.gov and look at your account transcript for 2023. It will show all actions taken on your account including any letters they claim to have sent.

I had a similar problem and it turned out my identity got flagged by the IRS fraud detection systems. Had to verify my identity before they would process my refund. The problem was they never sent the letter telling me to verify! Try calling the ID verify line directly: 800-830-5084

Be prepared for a looong wait time on that number too. I tried for 2 weeks and could never get through. Ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and called me when an agent was available. Worth it to finally get through.

This is totally common this year. IRS is sending letters out weeks after they say they will, or sometimes not at all. Try calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 877-777-4778. They can sometimes help when you're stuck in IRS limbo.

Taxpayer Advocate is useless now too. They're so backlogged they're only taking "hardship" cases where you're about to be evicted or have utilities shut off.

Just an FYI, I worked for the IRS until last year. If they said they're sending a letter, they generated it in the system but that doesn't always mean it actually gets printed and mailed. Their system is ancient. Your best bet is getting someone on the phone who can tell you exactly what's needed.

Try calling right at 7am EST when they open, or use one of those services that waits on hold for you like Claimyr. Also avoid Mondays and the day after holidays - those are the worst.

I spent 4 months playing this game last year. Filed in January, kept being told letters were sent, never got them. Finally got through to someone in May who told me they needed verification of my dependents. Sent that in and got my refund 3 weeks later. The system is broken AF.

If your return included EIC or Additional Child Tax Credit, those often get extra scrutiny and can trigger letters asking for more documentation. Do you claim any of those credits?

Jay Lincoln
Yes, I claimed EIC. That must be it.

Almost certainly what happened then. They do extra verification on those because of past fraud issues. You probably need to provide additional documentation to verify your eligibility.

The IRS has lost over 50% of my mail over the years. I now send EVERYTHING certified mail with return receipt. For your current situation, try requesting your account transcript. It will show any holds on your account and what they're waiting for.

i was in this exact situation. filed feb 1st. wmr said letter sent feb 12. never got it. called march 1st, they said another letter sent. never got that either. finally in april got through to someone who said they suspected identity theft and froze my refund. had to verify in person at a tax office. what a nightmare. check ur transcript for code 570 (refund hold).

Have you looked at your account transcript? If so, what codes do you see? That will tell you exactly what's going on. 570 means refund hold, 971 means notice issued, 420 means audit, etc.

Jay Lincoln
I see codes but I'm not sure what they mean. There's a 570 and a 971 from around when they said they sent the first letter.

570 is a refund hold and 971 is a notice issued. So they definitely generated a letter but it either got lost in the mail or went to wrong address. You'll need to call to find out what the notice was about specifically.

Pro tip: Go to your local IRS office in person. Make an appointment through the website. They can pull up your file and tell you exactly what's going on, and sometimes even resolve simple issues on the spot.

Bro the IRS is playing games with all of us this year 🤡 I finally got my issue fixed last week after dealing with this since January. My "letters" were being sent to an address I hadn't lived at in 3 years despite me updating my address on every tax return. The system is broken af.
