Filed 2/4, Verified In Person 2/26 - As Of Date Keeps Changing But No Return Showing

I filed my tax return on February 4th and went to verify my identity in person on February 26th as requested on the IRS2Go app. According to WMR and the IRS website, nothing is changing except for my 'as of date'. It went from 2/26 to 3/18 and now shows 3/25. My transcript is still showing no tax return filed at all? I've checked the IRS website FAQ section and the processing time estimates, but this doesn't seem normal. Did this happen to anyone else? Is this common for new residents filing in the US? I'm wondering if I need to take additional steps...

The 'as of' date is actually a processing marker in the IRS system that indicates when your account information was last updated or when it's scheduled to be updated next. Have you verified which transcript you're checking? There are several different types: Account Transcript, Return Transcript, Record of Account, and Wage & Income Transcript. For current year processing, you want to check the Account Transcript specifically. What filing status did you use, and did you claim any refundable credits like EITC or CTC?

I think I might be looking at the Account Transcript? It's the one that shows sort of like a summary of my account activity, I believe. I'm not entirely sure if I'm checking the right one though...

Would it make a difference if they verified identity in person rather than online? It's like having a passport stamped at customs but then still waiting in the immigration line - does the in-person verification speed things up or just confirm eligibility for processing?

This happened to me last year and it drove me CRAZY. My 'as of' date changed 4 times while showing no return filed. I was comparing it to my previous years when everything processed within 2 weeks. After about 6 weeks of this date-change game, my transcript suddenly updated with everything at once and my refund appeared 5 days later. It seems way worse than previous years but at least you've already done the ID verification which was what held mine up.

According to the IRS Processing Delays page on their site, this is actually becoming more common. I had the same experience last year - multiple 'as of' date changes before any transcript update. The IRS.gov/refunds page mentions this can happen with returns that need 'additional review' without specifying what triggers that review. Seems like it's just part of their verification process now.

Ur in the IRS processing loop hell rn. Happens to tons of ppl, esp after ID verify. The system is SLOW AF this yr! I was stuck for 51 days w/ changing dates b4 any movement. If u need answers fast, try Claimyr.com to get thru to an IRS agent (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) - they'll connect u directly instead of waiting on hold 4ever. I got thru in 20 mins when the wait was 2+ hrs. Agent confirmed my return was just in a processing queue, nothing wrong. Worth it if ur anxious abt the delay!

Don't worry too much about the changing 'as of' dates. This is normal system behavior, especially after an ID verification. Your return is in the system but likely in a post-verification processing queue. Try checking your account on the IRS website rather than just the transcript - sometimes the account shows different information. Also, make sure you're looking at 2023 tax year information (for returns filed in 2024), not 2024 tax year which would show as empty.

I had this exact issue last tax season. Filed on January 28th, 2023, verified identity on February 15th, and then my 'as of' date kept changing weekly (2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, etc.). My transcript showed nothing until March 31st, when everything suddenly appeared at once. The IRS is seriously backed up this year - I spoke with a representative on April 2nd who said they're prioritizing returns with refundable credits and pushing others to later processing batches.

Did you ever find out why they made you verify your identity in the first place? I'm wondering if there's something specific that triggers that requirement or if it's just random checks?

I've analyzed exactly 214 similar cases from this tax season. In 87% of them, returns with identity verification showed transcript updates within exactly 45-60 days from filing date. The remaining 13% took between 61-78 days. The current IRS processing backlog is approximately 8.7 million returns as of March 15th, which is actually 12% better than this time last year.

Have you checked your Return Transcript specifically? Sometimes the Account Transcript shows no activity while the Return Transcript shows the return has been received. Also, did you receive a CP01 Notice after your identity verification? That would confirm the IRS processed your verification. Your IDRS status code might be stuck in '570' hold which happens frequently after ID verification.

The 'as of' date changing without other updates might possibly indicate your return is in the Error Resolution System (ERS) queue. This doesn't necessarily mean you made an error - it could be something as simple as a mismatch between information reported to the IRS by employers and what's on your return. I would suggest waiting at least until after your next 'as of' date (3/25) before taking any action, as contacting them before then might not yield any new information.

Back in 2021, I had the same issue with changing 'as of' dates. What I learned is that this indicates your return is actively being worked on in batches. The IRS processes returns in weekly cycles, and the 'as of' date is when your account is scheduled for the next processing cycle. If you verified in person on 2/26, you're about 4 weeks into what can be a 6-9 week process post-verification. I'd expect to see movement by mid-April based on current processing patterns.

I'm going through the exact same situation right now! Filed on 2/8, verified identity in person on 2/28, and my 'as of' date has changed from 3/4 to 3/11 to 3/18 and now shows 4/1. My transcript still shows absolutely nothing for 2023. It's so frustrating because the IRS2Go app just keeps saying "still processing" with no real timeline. I've been checking daily and it's honestly making me more anxious. Has anyone here actually gotten through to speak with an IRS representative about this specific issue? I'm wondering if calling would even help or if they'd just tell me to wait longer.
