Filed 2/2/24 - Just Got 570 Code with 3/11 As Of Date - No 971 Code Yet
I filed my taxes on February 2nd and have been checking my transcript obsessively. It was showing N/A forever and I was getting so worried! š° Today it finally updated but now I have a 570 code with an as-of date of 3-11-24. There's no 971 code though which I've read usually comes with it? I'm freaking out a little... is this bad? I'm a student and really counting on this refund for my summer tuition payment. This is so stressful!!! Has anyone else had this happen?

A 570 code without a 971? Isn't that just the IRS's way of saying "we're looking at your return but not telling you why"? Have you checked if there were any math errors on your return? Did you claim any education credits that might need verification? I've seen this happen with first-time filers who claimed education expenses the IRS wants to verify.

I appreciate this insight so much! I'm in a somewhat similar situation and possibly facing the same issue. My refund is definitely needed rather urgently for some medical expenses that I can't really postpone much longer.

Thank you for explaining this! I had a 570 code for exactly 14 days before it updated to a 971 notice issued code. Then exactly 7 days after that I got my DDD. Such a relief to understand what these codes actually mean.

Thanks for breaking this down. Guess the IRS is just playing their favorite game of "hurry up and wait" with all of us again this year! š At least now I know what to expect.

Think of the 570 code like a yellow traffic light - it's not saying stop, but it's not giving you the green light either. The IRS is like a cautious driver checking their mirrors before proceeding. In my experience, the 971 notice often follows within 7-10 days, like the next traffic signal down the road. For many people on tight budgets, this delay feels like being stuck in traffic when you're already late for an important appointment.

Thanks for this explanation. Makes sense. Will watch for updates. Hoping for resolution soon. Need this refund badly.

I've seen this traffic light pattern play out many times. The 570 code is just a temporary hold. Most of the time, it resolves itself without you needing to do anything. Just keep checking your transcript every few days. Don't panic until you actually receive a notice explaining a problem.

OMG I had the EXACT same thing happen last month! 570 code w/ no 971 and I was freaking tf out. Turns out it was just bc I claimed the AOTC (American Opportunity Tax Credit) for my classes and they were double-checking my eligibility. Took about 2 wks but then got the 971 followed by a DDD! Hang in there - prob just verification of smthn on ur return!

I'm surprised how complicated education credits have become for verification. The IRS website makes them seem straightforward, but I've seen several resources online suggesting they're increasingly flagged for review.

Did you do anything to speed up the process? Here's what I'm wondering: 1. Did you call the IRS? 2. Did you receive any letters in the mail? 3. Did you have to submit any additional documentation? I'm trying to understand if there's anything proactive I should be doing.

So relieved to hear this compared to my sister's situation last year - hers was a full audit that took 6 months to resolve! A 2-week delay would be amazing in comparison.

Was your refund amount adjusted at all during this verification process? The Refund Hold procedure (RHP) sometimes results in adjustments to education credits if the Qualified Education Expenses don't match what the educational institution reported on Form 1098-T.

I had this exact situation on February 15th! 570 code with March 4th as-of date and no 971. I waited until February 29th and still nothing updated, so I finally broke down and called the IRS. After 3 hours of trying, I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 30 minutes. They confirmed it was just a random review of my education credits and released my refund while I was on the phone! DDD showed up in my transcript the very next day.

According to Internal Revenue Manual section 21.5.6.4.7, a TC 570 (Transaction Code 570) indicates a refund hold has been placed on your account. Per IRS procedural guidelines, this is often a temporary measure during return processing. Regulation 26 CFR Ā§ 601.103 allows for examination of returns prior to issuance of refunds. Statistical data indicates approximately 73% of 570 codes without accompanying 971 codes resolve within 14-21 days with no taxpayer intervention required.

I think I might be experiencing something similar to your situation... My transcript updated with a 570 code about a week ago, but I'm not entirely sure what it means. From what I've gathered, it seems like it could possibly be related to verification of information? The responses here have been quite helpful in understanding what might be happening.

Last year I had a 570 code show up with no 971 and panicked just like you. Called the IRS every day for a week with no luck getting through. Then suddenly my transcript updated with a 971 followed by an 846 deposit code the very next day! The IRS never even sent the notice they generated. My theory is they do random verification checks during busy season and most clear automatically. Don't worry too much yet!

I've been through this exact scenario and here's what I learned: ā¢ 570 code = temporary hold on refund ā¢ No 971 often means it's just in review queue ā¢ As-of date is not when it will resolve (common misconception) ā¢ Most education credit reviews resolve automatically ā¢ If you claimed AOTC or LLC, this is extremely common Hang in there! Mine resolved after 17 days with no action needed.

Be careful with your expectations here. I had a similar Refund Freeze Code (570) last filing period, and it took approximately 6 weeks to resolve. The absence of a 971 Notice Issued code initially seemed positive, but in my case, it simply meant the systematic review was in a preliminary stage. The verification process for education credits has intensified significantly since the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report identified substantial improper payments.
