E-file rejected with error code IND-032-04 (spouse prior year PIN) - How to recover or reset?

I just tried submitting my 2024 tax return electronically last week and got it rejected with error code IND-032-04. Apparently this means there's an issue with my spouse's prior year PIN. Problem is, my husband has no idea what PIN he used last year (we filed separately in 2023). I've looked everywhere and can't figure out how to recover or reset this PIN so we can file. Is there a way to retrieve this from the IRS website? Or do we have to create a new one somehow? The rejection notice just says to correct and resubmit, but I can't correct what I don't know! Any help would be really appreciated.

The IND-032-04 rejection code specifically means the self-select PIN for your spouse doesn't match what the IRS has on file from the previous year's return. You have a few options: 1. If your spouse filed electronically last year, the PIN would be the 5-digit number they created when e-filing. Check any paperwork or confirmation emails from your tax software from last year. 2. You can try using the last 5 digits of your spouse's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) from last year's return as the PIN. 3. If you can't remember the PIN, you can request a tax transcript from the IRS which might show the information, though this takes time: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript 4. As a last resort, you can file a paper return instead which doesn't require the PIN. The most common solution is using the AGI method - just enter the last 5 digits of last year's AGI as the PIN.

Thank you so much! We'll try the AGI method first. I didn't realize that could work as a substitute for the PIN. Do we just put those 5 digits in the same box where it asks for the PIN?

Yes exactly! Just enter those 5 digits where it asks for the PIN. Its worked for many people in your situation. Let us know if it works!

Just tried it and it worked! Our return was accepted. Thank you for saving us from having to paper file!

I had the same issue last year. The AGI trick didn't work for me so I ended up having to paper file. What a nightmare that turned out to be! šŸ˜«

I had this same issue and wasted days trying to figure it out. Finally I used taxr.ai and it explained exactly what was going on with my rejection code and walked me through how to fix it. It scanned my rejection notice and told me exactly what to do step by step. Saved me so much time instead of googling for hours trying to piece together info. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does way more than just read transcripts. I uploaded my rejection notice and it explained exactly what IND-032-04 meant, why it happened, and gave multiple solutions specific to my situation. It also lets you chat with it to ask follow-up questions. Honestly the most helpful tax tool I've ever used.

OMG I just tried taxr.ai for this exact same problem and it literally solved it in minutes!! It showed me where to find the AGI on last year's return and how to enter it correctly. I can't believe I spent three days stressing about this when I could have solved it in 5 minutes. Everyone needs to know about this service!!!

After getting the same rejection twice, I finally got through to an IRS agent using the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) who helped me reset the PIN problem. Instead of waiting on hold for hours, they called me back when an agent was ready. The agent explained that this happens all the time and was able to verify my identity and my spouse's identity to override the PIN issue. Totally worth it to get this fixed in one day instead of waiting weeks for a response.

Does this actually work? Sounds too good to be true. I've been trying to reach IRS for weeks...

100% works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after my 3rd rejection. The app gets you in the priority queue somehow. Got a callback within 45 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. Best money I've spent to fix my tax issues.

Do you have to give them personal info? Seems kinda sketch

No personal tax info needed - it's just a calling service that gets you through to the IRS faster. You talk directly with the IRS agents, not with Claimyr people. They just get you past the busy signals and hold times.

Just wanted to follow up - I used this yesterday and got through to someone at the IRS in under an hour. After weeks of trying!! My PIN issue is resolved and my return has been accepted. Absolute game changer.

Check your tax software from last year. Most of them save your PIN info in your account settings or in the saved return. I use TurboTax and was able to find my spouse's PIN by opening last year's return and checking the e-file section.

the irony of needing a PIN from last year but not being able to access it without creating some new account to request transcripts which takes weeks to verify is just peak IRS stupidity. this is why i always paper file. yeah it takes longer but at least i dont have to remember random 5 digit codes from a year ago šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

But paper filing is taking like 6+ months to process now. I'd rather deal with PIN issues than wait half a year for my refund.

took me exactly 74 days to get my refund after paper filing this year. not great but not 6 months either. i'll take the guaranteed processing over electronic rejects anyday

This happened to me too. Called the IRS e-file help desk at 866-255-0654. They won't give you the PIN but they can help reset it so you can create a new one. You'll need to verify identity info for both you and your spouse.

I tried calling that number and was on hold for 2.5 hours before giving up. Any other suggestions?

Try early morning right when they open. That's when I got through after only 25 mins on hold.

I used claimyr.com to get through on that exact number and had my PIN reset in one call. Talking to an agent was the only thing that worked for me after trying everything else.

If you can't figure out the PIN situation, just file on paper. Yeah it's annoying and will take longer, but at least you won't have to deal with this PIN nonsense. I gave up after 3 attempts and just mailed mine in.

here's a trick i learned from my accountant: if you're using tax software, try entering 00000 as the PIN. sometimes that works as a default when the system can't verify. worked for me last year when i had the same issue.

This does NOT work anymore. IRS closed this loophole in 2023. Now you have to use either the correct PIN or your prior year AGI.

I had an epiphany when this happened to me - check your phone's notes app! My husband had stored his PIN there because he knew he'd forget it. Worth checking if your spouse might have done something similar.

The IRS systems are such a joke. They expect us to remember a random 5-digit number from a year ago but they can't process a return in under 6 months. Make it make sense! šŸ¤”

Right?? And they have the nerve to charge penalties and interest when THEY mess up. The whole system is designed to be frustrating.

I've been dealing with tax issues for years and recently discovered taxr.ai which has been a total game changer. When I got a similar rejection code, it analyzed everything and gave me step-by-step instructions to fix it. No more guessing or spending hours researching. It basically translated IRS-speak into plain English and saved me so much stress. https://taxr.ai

Another day, another ad for some miracle tax tool šŸ™„ Does this actually help or is it just scraping info from IRS website?

It's definitely not just scraping info. I was skeptical too but it actually uses AI to interpret your specific situation. For my rejection code, it gave me multiple options to try based on my specific circumstances and explained the pros/cons of each approach. Way more personalized than just googling.

Update: Holy crap this actually worked! It explained my error code better than any IRS page and gave me a solution that wasn't mentioned anywhere else I looked. My return was just accepted. Sharing this with everyone I know with tax problems!

If nothing else works, you and your spouse can visit a local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in person. Bring ID and they can help with PIN issues. You need an appointment though - call 844-545-5640 to schedule one.

Just had success with Claimyr (claimyr.com) after trying for TWO WEEKS to get through to IRS. Got a callback within an hour and the agent helped me override the PIN issue. They connected me to the IRS e-file department directly who fixed it on the spot. Never would have got my return accepted without it. Totally saved my refund from being delayed for months.

Honestly considering I was about to have to paper file and wait 4-6 months for my refund, it was absolutely worth every penny. Getting a real IRS agent to fix my PIN issue in minutes instead of waiting months for my refund is the best decision I made all tax season.

FYI for anyone with this issue - the rejection code IND-032-04 is specifically for the self-selected PIN from the prior year tax return. This is different from an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). Make sure you're trying to find/reset the correct PIN type!

-

Emily Parker

This is important! I wasted days trying to reset my IP PIN when it was actually the self-selected e-filing PIN that was the problem.
