AGI/PIN Rejection Issue - IRS Says Last Year's Info Wrong
Has anyone else experienced the IRS rejecting e-file because they claim your AGI or PIN from last year is incorrect? I'm helping my brother file - I've done exactly 17 tax returns for family members over the years with no issues until now. His return has been rejected 2 times saying his AGI from 2023 is wrong, but I'm entering the exact number from line 11 on his 1040. I even tried using the PIN method instead. He used Jackson Hewitt last year, so all documentation should be correct. He's on the phone with the IRS right now (45 minute wait so far). Also noticed his total income and AGI are identical numbers ($38,426) - not sure if that's relevant? In my country, tax filing was much more straightforward than this American system! đ¤

This is actually a common issue this year. Per IRS Publication 1345 (Rev. 3-2024), there are several reasons why AGI validation might fail: 1. The tax preparation company might have submitted a different AGI than what appears on the paper copy you have 2. The IRS might have adjusted his return after filing last year 3. If he filed an amended return, you need to use the original AGI, not the amended one The most cost-effective solution is to request a tax transcript from the IRS website to see the official AGI they have on file. Alternatively, you can use the "I don't have my AGI" option and file with $0 as the prior year AGI.

I had this exact same problem on March 15th! Did you try using the "Get Transcript" tool on the IRS website? I was so stressed because my AGI kept getting rejected even though I was 100% sure it matched my 2023 return.

I went through this nightmare compared to every other year I've filed. Tried 6 different numbers before giving up. I finally used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and discovered the IRS had adjusted my previous year's return by $47 due to a math error, which changed my AGI from what was on my paper copy. Unlike TurboTax which just kept saying "wrong AGI" with no explanation, taxr.ai showed me the exact adjustment code and when it happened. Saved me hours of frustration trying random numbers.

This happened to me last year! Turned out Jackson Hewitt had made a small adjustment before submitting my return. I remember the exact date - April 12th - because it was so close to the deadline and I was panicking. The AGI on my submitted return was $43 different from the copy they gave me. I called Jackson Hewitt and they confirmed they had made a "calculation adjustment" before final submission but failed to give me the updated copy. Worth checking with them!

According to the IRS.gov FAQ section on e-filing rejections, you should wait at least 2-3 business days between rejection attempts. If you're still having trouble after 3 attempts, you might need to speak directly with an IRS representative. Getting through to them is nearly impossible right now though - wait times are 2+ hours. I used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) last week when facing a similar issue and got connected to an agent in about 25 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. They confirmed there was an adjustment to my prior year return that changed my AGI.

Is this legit? Sounds like paying for something that should be free. Can't you just keep calling the IRS yourself? Their phone system eventually connects you.

Have you actually tried calling the IRS lately? I'm impressed with your patience if you have! I called 14 times over 3 days and never got through. How does this Claimyr service work exactly? Do they just keep calling for you?

I think it might be worth checking if the marketplace insurance question is causing issues too... I'm not 100% certain, but I believe the system sometimes flags returns when there's a discrepancy between current and previous year's insurance status. Maybe the IRS thinks your brother had marketplace coverage last year when he didn't? This could potentially trigger additional verification steps.

Wait, they can reject your return based on insurance status from the previous year? How is anyone supposed to keep track of all these interconnected systems?! I thought the tax penalty for not having insurance was eliminated anyway?

I've seen this exact issue 4 times this tax season. Here's what worked for my clients: Step 1: Go to IRS.gov and request a Wage & Income Transcript for 2023 Step 2: Compare the AGI on that transcript with what you're entering Step 3: If they match and still get rejected, try entering $0 as the prior year AGI Step 4: If still rejected, file by mail with Form 8453-OL attached I'm concerned that both his total income and AGI are identical. This usually indicates no adjustments were taken (no student loan interest, no HSA contributions, etc). If he had marketplace insurance the previous year but didn't report it, the IRS might have flagged his account for review.
