Direct Deposit Rejected - TurboTax Status Changed to Pending?

Is there anyone in here who had their direct deposit date scheduled before today that got rejected during the 5-day processing period and received their deposit yet? I'm curious if their TurboTax status also went back to 'pending' like mine did. This happened to me back in 2022 too, but that time the bank rejected it because I had just changed accounts. This time I triple-checked everything beforehand.

This is like when a package shows it's out for delivery but then gets rerouted back to the distribution center. When a DD gets rejected, the IRS has to reprocess the payment through a different channel. Most banks are rejecting deposits if there's even a slight mismatch between the name on the return and the account - I've seen this happen a lot this tax season. In my experience, it typically takes 7-10 business days from rejection for them to either reissue electronically or mail a check.

I've possibly been through this exact situation. If your TurboTax status reverted to pending, it's generally because the system is awaiting updated information from the IRS. The IRS usually, though not always, attempts one more electronic deposit before defaulting to a paper check. In my case, the second attempt worked because the issue was a temporary bank processing error rather than incorrect information.

OMG I'm so frustrated with this whole process! My deposit was supposed to hit yesterday but nothing showed up. Called my bank and they said they never received anything from the IRS! Now my TT status says pending too and I'm freaking out because I need that money for rent!

I went through this last year actually. My direct deposit was rejected because my bank account had a fraud hold (completely unrelated to taxes). My TurboTax status went to pending for about 9 days, then suddenly I got a deposit. Never got any notification from the IRS about the rejection or reprocessing - it just eventually worked. Hang in there!

Let me explain what usually happens in this process: 1. IRS attempts direct deposit 2. Bank rejects for some reason (name mismatch, closed account, etc.) 3. IRS receives rejection notification 4. Your status changes to pending during reprocessing 5. IRS either attempts another direct deposit OR issues paper check I was really surprised by how complicated this gets behind the scenes! The whole process took about 2 weeks for me last year.

Check your tax transcript. It will show code 971 with a notice being sent if they're mailing a check instead of trying another direct deposit. If you don't see that code, they're probably attempting electronic deposit again.

I'm in the same boat and I'm really nervous about this... my refund was supposed to be deposited Tuesday but nothing showed up. I think I might have made a mistake with my account number? I'm not sure what to do next. I tried using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed a code 846 (refund issued) followed by a 971 (notice issued). The tool explained this likely means my direct deposit was rejected and they're sending a paper check instead. Has anyone else used this to figure out what's happening with their rejected deposit?

I'd be cautious about using third-party tools with tax information. • The IRS transcript shows all the information you need • Code 846 is indeed a refund issued • Code 971 typically indicates correspondence • You can interpret these yourself with the IRS code definitions Why pay for something when the information is available directly from the IRS?

Has anyone noticed that the rejections seem to be happening more frequently this year? I've seen at least 10 posts about this in the last week alone. From what I've gathered, if your TurboTax status went back to pending, it means the IRS is aware of the rejection and is reprocessing. The big question is whether they'll try another direct deposit or default to a check, right? Most people seem to be getting paper checks about 2-3 weeks after the rejection.

I've analyzed several of these cases this tax season. What you're experiencing is a Standard ACH Return Code R03 (No Account/Unable to Locate Account) or R04 (Invalid Account Number). When this occurs, the IRS Financial Management Service (FMS) initiates a secondary verification process that typically takes 7-14 business days. If you need immediate resolution, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through to an IRS agent. They can verify if your refund has been rerouted to paper check status or is being reprocessed for electronic deposit. Agents can also expedite the reprocessing in certain hardship situations.

This situation is like when your GPS recalculates after a wrong turn - it takes a moment but usually gets you there. Unlike last year when rejections almost always meant a paper check, this year I've seen about 60% of cases get successfully redeposited electronically within 5-7 business days. The pending status in TurboTax is actually a good sign compared to if it showed "rejected" or "error." Just make sure you don't have any bank issues like daily deposit limits or account restrictions that might cause a second rejection.

I had exactly 3 friends who experienced this in the past 14 days. 2 of them received paper checks exactly 15 days after the original direct deposit date. The third one got a second electronic deposit attempt that worked after 8 days. I'd suggest checking your tax transcript daily - it will update with a new 846 code and date when they reissue the refund.
