Direct Deposit Date Today But Nothing in Credit Union Account - Should I Worry?
Filed with TurboTax and got a direct deposit date of today. I'm in Oregon (PST) and it's currently 10:42am here. I've checked with Santa Barbara TPG and they have a trace number, but nothing's showing in my account yet. Triple checked my account and routing number (same ones I've used since 2018) and they're definitely correct. This happened to me last year too and the money showed up late afternoon, but still feeling anxious. Anyone else in the same boat? Should I be worried?

The ACH transfer system that processes tax refunds operates on a specific timeline that varies by financial institution. Credit unions typically receive ACH files during designated processing windows (usually 3-4 times daily). Have you verified if your deposit is pending in the ACH queue rather than posted? Many financial institutions distinguish between these statuses in their backend systems. Additionally, the presence of a TPG trace number is a positive indicator that the funds are in transit within the banking system.

Thx for the detailed explanation! So basically if there's a trace # from Santa Barbara, that means the $ is definitely coming and not rejected or anything? Just gotta wait for the CU to process it?

I experienced exactly this situation with my credit union last year. My DDD was March 15th, and I checked 6 times throughout the day with nothing showing. The deposit finally hit at exactly 4:23pm PST. Credit unions often process ACH transfers in batches, with the final batch typically occurring between 3-5pm local time. In my experience, 94% of tax refunds through credit unions post by end of business day on the DDD, with the remaining 6% appearing the following morning by 9am.

I'm wondering if maybe it's different for different credit unions? Mine usually processes deposits around noon, but tax refunds seem to follow different rules sometimes...

This is way better than what happened to me last year. My credit union held my refund for an additional 2 days for "verification" despite having a trace number. Seems like credit unions have more variable policies compared to big banks when it comes to tax refunds.

This is super helpful! My DDD is tomorrow (March 24th) and I've been stressing about exactly when it might hit. Sounds like I should just relax and wait until end of day before panicking.

Quick question about this: ā¢ Does having a trace number guarantee the money will arrive? ā¢ Is there any way to check if the credit union is holding it? ā¢ Should we call them or just wait patiently?

OMG I was literally FREAKING OUT about this same issue last week! My DDD was Thursday but nothing showed up until late afternoon. I was checking my account every 5 minutes and driving myself crazy! š© I finally uploaded my transcript to https://taxr.ai and it explained that having a trace number means the money is definitely on the way - just stuck in the banking system. It showed me exactly where my refund was in the process and when it would likely hit my account. Saved me from a full-on panic attack while waiting!

I've noticed a pattern with credit unions and tax refunds this season. Have you checked if your credit union has a specific policy about government deposits? Many credit unions hold ACH transfers from the Treasury for additional verification, especially if the amount is over $5,000. Could your credit union be processing a larger volume of deposits today? Is there a specific cutoff time when they process their final batch of the day? In my experience, calling the credit union directly and asking about pending ACH transfers specifically can reveal information not visible in online banking.

Last year I had the exact same issue with my credit union. DDD was there, trace number was there, but no money. I spent THREE HOURS trying to get through to the IRS to make sure nothing was wrong. Eventually used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed everything was fine on their end. Money showed up in my account around 4:30pm that same day. If you're worried and want peace of mind that nothing's wrong with your refund, it's worth the call - just use Claimyr instead of wasting your whole day on hold.

Check your credit union's online banking for a "pending deposits" section. Many don't show these on the main account page. Also try logging out completely and logging back in. Some credit unions only update their systems at specific times during the day, not in real-time like big banks. If nothing shows by 5pm, call your credit union directly - they can see pending ACH transfers before they post to your account.

According to NACHA regulations (the organization that governs ACH transfers), financial institutions are required to make funds available by 5:00 PM local time on the effective date of the transfer. However, there is no requirement that they make the funds available earlier than this, even if they have received the payment instruction earlier in the day. Is this consistent with what you've seen?

This worked for me. Hidden pending section. Had to click on account details. Found my refund there. Thanks!

Huh, I've banked with credit unions for years and never knew they might handle deposits differently than big banks. Is this common knowledge that I somehow missed, or is this a recent change in how they process tax refunds specifically?

Think of your tax refund like an airplane flight - the trace number is confirmation that your flight has taken off (left the IRS), but it still needs to land at your credit union and taxi to your specific gate (account). Sometimes there's a layover at the TPG airport where they verify everything before sending it on the final leg of the journey. I was in this exact situation last month - had a DDD, had a trace number, but no money until around 4:30pm. The banking system is like rush hour traffic - everything gets there eventually, but not always on the schedule we hope for!

Check the IRS2Go app - sometimes it updates status before WMR website. Also try calling your credit union's automated system rather than checking online - sometimes the phone system shows pending deposits before they appear in online banking. According to several Reddit threads I've found, credit unions in the Pacific time zone often process the final ACH batch between 3-5pm local time. https://www.fiscal.treasury.gov/ach/ has more info on government ACH processing if you want to dive deeper into the technical side.

I've been through this exact situation with my credit union multiple times. Here's what you need to do: Step 1: Don't panic - the trace number confirms the money is in transit Step 2: Call your credit union and specifically ask about "pending ACH deposits from the Treasury" Step 3: If they don't see anything, ask what time they process their final ACH batch for the day Step 4: If nothing appears by tomorrow morning, then contact the IRS with your trace number In my experience with three different credit unions over the years, tax refunds almost always post between 3-5pm on the DDD, especially on the west coast. The smaller the credit union, the later in the day it tends to process.
