Can't verify ID without notice number - need phone number for IRS verification
Need help verifying my identity with IRS. There's a notice on my account but I haven't received the letter yet. Can't verify online without the notice number and can't even see the notice in my account. Anyone know a direct number to call for identity verification?

The IRS Identity Verification number is 800-830-5084. They're open Mon-Fri 7am-7pm local time. Wait times can be pretty long so call first thing in the morning. Make sure you have your prior year tax return handy when you call.

ā¢Yeah wait times can be rough š© Best bet is calling right when they open at 7am. If you get the 'high call volume' message just keep trying every 30 mins or so

Before you spend hours on the phone, try taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what's going on with your account and what steps you need to take. It's only $1 and saved me so much time trying to figure out my verification issues. https://taxr.ai

ā¢100% legit! I was skeptical too but it actually showed me exactly why I needed to verify and what documents I needed. Way better than waiting on hold for hours šÆ

The ID verify letter (5071C) usually takes 2-3 weeks to arrive. If you haven't gotten it by then, you can request a transcript and it might show the notice number there. Otherwise calling is your best bet

Protip: if u cant get thru on the main line try the taxpayer advocate service at 877-777-4778. Sometimes they can help with id verify stuff too

Another option is to try calling the general IRS customer service line at 1-800-829-1040 and asking them to transfer you to ID verification. Sometimes you can get through faster that way than calling the direct ID verify line. Also, if you have a local Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) near you, you can make an appointment and they can help verify your identity in person - might be faster than waiting on the phone!

Check if your local library has any free tax help programs too! A lot of them have VITA volunteers who are familiar with IRS verification issues and might be able to help you figure out next steps. Also worth trying the IRS2Go mobile app - sometimes it shows notices that don't appear on the website. Good luck! š¤
