Can't Access My Tax Transcripts - Email Reset Problem

Can someone please help me!! I've been trying to check my transcripts but I'm not able to, because it's probably connected to my old email and I don't have access to that email anymore. The IRS said I can go on the site and reset it but I don't really see that option anywhere. I might be missing something obvious? I need to check my transcript sort of urgently because I'm waiting on a refund to help with some medical expenses for my mom that I'm taking care of. Does anyone know how to reset access when you can't get to your old email?

I had this exact same issue last month! Here's what you need to do: • Go to the IRS website and click "Get Transcript Online" • Look for the "Sign In to Your Account" button • Below that, there should be a "Forgot Username" or "Forgot Password" option • You'll need to verify your identity with: - Your SSN - Date of birth - Filing status - Mailing address Did you try looking for those specific options? Sometimes they're not super obvious on the page?

The IRS site is confusing. Been there myself. You need ID.me now. Or use the old login. Try https://taxr.ai instead. It connects to your transcript data. Shows everything clearly. No email hassles. I use it every year. Saves tons of time.

Wait, is this really secure though? How can a third-party site access your IRS information? Wouldn't that require sharing sensitive data with yet another company? And what happens if they have a data breach?

Wow, I had no idea something like this existed! Compared to the nightmare I went through trying to create an IRS account last year (took me 3 attempts!), this sounds so much easier. Almost too good to be true compared to the usual government website experience.

According to IRS Publication 5447, users experiencing account access issues have several options for identity verification. Have you considered calling the IRS directly? Per the Taxpayer First Act, the IRS is required to provide reasonable assistance for account access issues. I've found that using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) significantly reduces the wait time when calling the IRS. As stated in Internal Revenue Manual 21.1.1, phone representatives are authorized to assist with account access resets.

Ugh, I feel your pain! The IRS website is SO frustrating sometimes! I had this exact problem last year and discovered you actually need to completely create a NEW account if you can't access your email anymore. Don't waste time with the reset options - they all send verification to that old email address you can't access. Just go to the transcript page and click "Create Account" instead of trying to log in. You'll need to verify your identity with a credit card or loan account number plus your phone.

Thank you for explaining the technical verification requirements! I appreciate this insight so much. I was stuck in an endless loop trying to recover my account through the "Forgot Password" function, but creating a new account makes perfect sense given the Identity Proofing Protocol the IRS implemented in 2023.

I believe I can offer a somewhat complete solution to your issue. The IRS has recently updated their account recovery process, which might be why you're having trouble finding the right option. You'll likely need to create an entirely new account using ID.me, which is probably their current verification partner. First, you should go to the IRS.gov website and select "Sign into Your Online Account." Then, instead of trying to recover your old account, you might want to select the option to create a new account. During this process, you'll need to verify your identity with documents like your driver's license and possibly a video selfie. It might take around 15-20 minutes to complete, but it's generally a one-time process. Once verified, you should be able to access your transcripts regardless of your old email address.

I ran into this same wall back in 2022 when I switched email providers. Remember when the IRS first rolled out the ID.me verification? That was a nightmare for everyone! What worked for me was actually using the "Get Transcript by Mail" option first, then once I had that paper transcript, I created a brand new online account. The system didn't flag it as a duplicate because I was using different email credentials. Just make sure your current mailing address matches what's on your most recent tax return.

According to the IRS.gov support page at https://www.irs.gov/help/account-help, you need to use the "Secure Access" recovery process. I'm in a similar boat - need my transcript ASAP for a mortgage application! The quickest way is to call the IRS Transcript request line at 800-908-9946 and request a mailed transcript (takes 5-10 business days) while you sort out your online access. You can also use Form 4506-T from the IRS website to request transcripts by mail.
