Can I Still Get a DDD if IRS Requested W2-G and 1099 Forms?

Hey everyone! Quick q - is it possible to get a DDD (direct deposit date) if the IRS is requesting additional forms? Specifically a W2-G and 1099? My friend's baby father was supposed to get $ on March 15th. He never got the refund tho. Then today they said IRS sent a letter requesting those forms. I'm a bit nervous bc I'm in a similar situation (int'l student w/ gambling winnings). Checked everything 3x before filing but now I'm worried. Thx in advance for any info!

Oh no, this is definitely a delay situation! When the IRS requests additional documentation like W2-G (gambling winnings) and 1099 forms, they've basically put your refund on HOLD until they receive and process those documents. The original DDD becomes invalid at that point. I'm seeing this happen A LOT this tax season with gambling income verification. They're really cracking down on this area!

How long does it usually take for them to process after you send in the requested forms?

To add some precision to this - once you submit the requested documents, it typically takes exactly 6 to 8 weeks for processing. Though I've seen cases resolve in 4 weeks and others take up to 12 weeks, depending on current IRS workload and whether the documents fully satisfy their verification requirements.

I should point out that this verification process is somewhat standard procedure when there's gambling income involved. The IRS tends to be cautious with W2-G forms because they want to ensure all winnings were properly reported. In my experience working with international students, I've found that responding promptly and thoroughly to these requests is your best approach.

Did your friend's baby father actually receive the letter yet? What exactly does it say? Sometimes these are just verification requests rather than missing document notices. Does he still have copies of his original W2-G and 1099? Did he include these forms with his original filing or just report the numbers?

I went through almost the exact same situation last year! My W2-G from a casino triggered a verification check. After getting the letter, I spent DAYS trying to reach someone at the IRS to confirm what I needed to send. Busy signals, disconnects, and hold music for hours. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. Totally worth it! The agent confirmed exactly what documents they needed and where to send them. Got my refund about 5 weeks after sending in the docs.

Had this happen in February. Got letter 4115C. Requested W2-G verification. Sent documents March 1st. New DDD appeared April 12th. Refund received April 17th.

Wait, so it's like your tax return goes back to square one? That's like running a marathon and then finding out you have to run another one right after! Did they at least pay you interest for the delay?

I'm wondering, has anyone here had experience with international student status complicating this process? I think that might possibly add another layer of verification, especially with gambling winnings that might be subject to different withholding rates?

I had a similar situation as an international student last year. They also requested additional verification of my student visa status along with the gambling forms. The agent I spoke with mentioned that non-resident aliens sometimes have different withholding requirements on gambling winnings. Took about 2 months total to resolve.

Based on the current processing timeline, I'd recommend your friend submit the requested documents by April 30th at the latest. If they do that, they could potentially see a new DDD by June 15th. Another option is to check if they can upload the documents through the IRS online account portal rather than mailing them - as of March 1st, 2024, the IRS expanded their digital document submission options for certain verification requests.

Just to clarify, per Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6, taxpayers responding to these verification requests should retain proof of submission. The IRS allows 30 days from the date of the letter for response before taking adverse action, though extensions may be requested by calling the number on the notice.
