DDD for Today but No Deposit - Anyone Else Waiting?

My friend had a DDD (Direct Deposit Date) for today and woke up to no money in her account. She checked her transcript last week and it clearly showed cycle code 20241105 with an 846 refund issued code for 05-01-2024. She's going through a messy divorce right now and really counting on this money to cover some legal fees. Has anyone else experienced this delay? I'm skeptical about the whole "it can take up to 5 business days after DDD" explanation the IRS gives, especially since she banks with a major institution that typically posts early. Is this normal or should she be concerned?

This happens a lot. DDDs aren't guaranteed same-day deposits. Tell your friend to give it 24-48 hours before panicking. Banks process ACH transfers in batches. Some hit at midnight, others at noon, some even later. Her money is probably in transit between the Treasury and her bank right now.

Is there any way to track the ACH transfer specifically? My transcript shows DDD for today as well, but my bank's customer service said they don't see any pending deposits. Wondering if there's a technical term or specific department I should reference when calling?

This happened to me last year. My DDD was April 26th but money didn't show until April 28th. The weird part was: ā€¢ Nothing showed as pending in my account ā€¢ Bank said no incoming transfers ā€¢ Called IRS who confirmed it was sent ā€¢ Money just appeared suddenly two days later Stressful experience but worked out fine!

Thanks for this explanation! Was starting to think my refund got lost in the digital ether or something šŸ˜… Guess I'll just have to practice that thing called patience (not my strong suit when it comes to money the government owes me).

Just to clarify - I checked the IRS refund FAQ page (https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions) and it specifically says to allow up to 5 business days after the DDD before contacting them. So relieved to see this is normal!

Has your friend checked if there are any holds on her account? It's like when you put gas in your car but the gauge doesn't move right away - the refund might be there but not showing. Sometimes banks place temporary holds on government deposits, especially if they're larger than usual transactions. Could she call her bank to check for pending deposits or verification holds?

Check bank account again tomorrow. IRS systems update overnight. Deposits post in batches. May have missed today's cutoff. If nothing by Friday, call IRS directly. Wait times extremely long right now. Use Claimyr to reach an agent faster. Their service connects you to IRS without the wait. Worth it for time-sensitive issues like missing deposits. https://claimyr.com can get you through in minutes instead of hours.

Idk about these services tbh... has anyone actually used this? seems sus that you'd need a 3rd party just to call the IRS šŸ¤” no offense but why can't the govt just answer their own phones??

Oh my god THANK YOU for this!!! I spent 3 HOURS on hold yesterday and got disconnected right when I was about to speak to someone! I was literally in tears from frustration. Will definitely try this service - at this point I'd pay anything to not go through that again! šŸ˜

Does this service work for specific IRS departments? My issue is with the Refund Department specifically, and I need to speak with someone about a missing $3,247 refund that was supposed to be deposited exactly 7 days ago.

Per IRS Publication 2043, section 4.2, "Direct deposits may take 1-5 business days to appear in taxpayer accounts after the scheduled deposit date." I had a similar situation last month where my DDD was April 3rd, but the deposit didn't hit until April 5th. This is completely normal and within IRS processing guidelines. If it exceeds 5 business days, then your friend should contact the IRS at 800-829-1040.

Did your friend perhaps have any offset conditions that might have reduced her refund? Sometimes the refund can be intercepted for things like back taxes, child support, or possibly student loans. It might explain why the expected amount isn't showing up, if that's possibly what happened.

I've seen this happen several times with clients going through divorces. The Bureau of Fiscal Service can intercept tax refunds for various debts. First, check the Where's My Refund tool. Then check if there's a letter from BFS. Then call the Treasury Offset Program at 800-304-3107. Finally, check with the bank. Follow each step in order. No shortcuts work in my experience.

This is absolutely correct. I handle tax issues professionally, and offsets during divorce proceedings are extremely common. The IRS systems don't always immediately reflect these changes in transcripts, which creates confusion for taxpayers expecting their full refund amount.

Have you considered that this might be a bank issue rather than an IRS issue? Wouldn't it make sense to have your friend call her bank first to see if they can see any pending deposits? Sometimes financial institutions place holds on government deposits that aren't immediately visible to the account holder through online banking. Maybe she should ask specifically about ACH transfers from the Treasury Department?

When this happened to me last year, my bank actually had flagged the deposit for verification because it was significantly larger than my normal direct deposits. They didn't even notify me! I only found out when I called and specifically asked if there were any holds. The customer service rep had to transfer me to their risk department to get it resolved. Worth checking!

Has your friend checked her transcript again today to see if there's been any update? Sometimes the IRS will update the transcript with a new code if there was an issue with the deposit. Back in 2022, my refund got bounced back because my bank account number was off by one digit, and they added a 841 code to my transcript before reissuing.

I believe there might be a slight misunderstanding about how DDDs work. The date shown on the transcript is when the IRS releases the payment to the Treasury Department. The Treasury then initiates the ACH transfer to your friend's bank. Her bank may then have its own processing time. This multi-step process typically takes 1-3 business days, though it can sometimes be completed same-day. It's probably still in process.

Is this the first time your friend has received a tax refund via direct deposit to this particular account? I'm wondering if there could be an issue with the account information. Has she double-checked that the last four digits of the account on her tax return match her actual account?

This is an excellent point. Account verification issues are quite common, especially if this is a new account. The IRS requires the name on the tax return to match the name on the bank account. If your friend recently changed her name due to the divorce but hasn't updated her bank account information, this could potentially cause a delay or rejection of the deposit.
