Called IRS Office - They Say I Need to Respond to a Letter I Never Received?

I called my local IRS office exactly 3 days ago. The agent said he verified all my information but I still have to respond to the letter that was sent 28 days ago. I never received any letter though šŸ˜. Am I completely out of luck now? I received my state refund $642 on March 14th so I don't understand what's happening with my federal return. I'm taking care of my mom and really counting on this money for her medications...

You're definitely not SOL. This happens more frequently than you'd think with IRS correspondence. Given the April 15th deadline is approaching, I'd recommend requesting a reissuance of the CP2000 or whatever notice they sent. The IRS has a 45-day standard response window for most notices, but this can often be extended if you can prove non-receipt of the original correspondence.

Yep, happens all the time tbh. Had the exact same thing last yr. Called and they resent the letter, got it 5 days later. NBD once you know what to do.

I'm surprised how common this is! I work with tax documents regularly and the USPS non-delivery rate for IRS correspondence is significantly higher than other mail. The Notice Reissuance Request procedure exists specifically because of this problem.

I had almost the exact same issue. Here's what worked for me: ā€¢ Called the regular IRS number 15+ times with no luck ā€¢ Used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through to an agent ā€¢ Explained I never received the notice ā€¢ Agent confirmed my address and resent the letter With Claimyr I was connected to an actual IRS person in about 17 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. The agent was able to tell me exactly what the letter was about and what I needed to do to resolve it.

Did the IRS agent tell you specifically what type of letter it was? I had a similar situation on February 23rd when I discovered they had sent a verification letter on January 12th that I never received. Different letters have different response timeframes - some are 30 days, others are 60 or even 90 days from the date on the letter.

This is such an important point about the different timeframes! I never would have thought to ask about the specific letter type.

My neighbor had this happen last year and found out it was a CP75 audit letter. She almost missed the deadline because she didn't know what type of letter it was. I'm a bit worried the same thing might be happening here.

It's probably, though not certainly, a CP2000 notice or possibly a CP75 examination notice, given the context of having received the state refund but not federal. The timeframe for response is typically 30 days for most notices, but can sometimes be extended if you can demonstrate non-receipt of the original correspondence.

I've been through this rodeo before. Once you get the letter, you'll want to understand exactly what they're asking for. I've found https://taxr.ai incredibly helpful for decoding IRS notices. Last year I got a CP2000 that made absolutely no sense to me - taxr.ai broke down every line item they were questioning and helped me respond correctly. In my experience, most of these letters are either verification requests or simple discrepancies they need clarified.

Does this service actually provide any information beyond what's already on the IRS website? I'm curious how it helps with notices specifically.

Here's exactly what you need to do - it's like being locked out of your house but knowing there's a spare key somewhere: 1. Call the IRS main number (800-829-1040) first thing in the morning (7am EST) when wait times are shortest 2. Request they resend the letter to your verified address 3. Ask for a 30-day extension from the date you receive the new letter 4. Get the name and ID number of the representative you speak with 5. Ask specifically what documentation you'll need to prepare I've seen this happen to 8 different people this tax season alone. The mail system has been particularly problematic with IRS notices. Don't stress - this is fixable as long as you're proactive.

Success story here! The exact same thing happened to me in February. According to the IRS.gov FAQ section on missing notices, I requested a reissued letter, received it within 10 days, and responded immediately. My refund was processed 16 days later. Make sure to check your address is correct in the IRS system - I discovered mine had an incorrect apartment number which is why I never got the original notice.
