CP23 Notice received - Will I get my refund quickly after electronically submitting my 2022 return?

I just got a CP23 notice from the IRS about my 2022 taxes. From what i understand, they were holding my refund because I hadn't filed yet. I immediately submitted my 2022 return electronically last night when I realized what was happening. I only ended up owing $375 on the return. People are telling me that once you electronically file after getting a CP23, they can release your funds pretty fast. Is this true? Has anyone gone through this process recently? How long did it take to get your refund after filing?

MidnightRider

The CP23 is a notice that the IRS has no record of receiving your tax return for that year and they're holding your refund from another year until you resolve this issue. By filing your 2022 return, you're addressing exactly what they asked for. Typically, once you file electronically after receiving a CP23, the IRS processes it within 2-3 weeks. Since you've filed electronically, they should release any held refunds within 4-6 weeks after processing your return. The fact that you owe only $375 rather than being due a refund for 2022 shouldn't affect the timeline for releasing any held refunds from other tax years. Make sure to keep checking your transcript for updates - you should see the return posted first, then eventually codes showing the release of any held refunds.

Thank you for the detailed response! this is really helpful. I was hoping it wuold be faster than 4-6 weeks but at least I know what to expect now.

When I had something similar happen, it took almost exactly 5 weeks from when I filed until my refund hit my account. The waiting is the worst part!

I was in this exact situation last year. Felt like I was going in circles trying to figure out what was going on with my refund. I finally used taxr.ai and it was a game changer. The tool broke down my transcript, explained all those confusing codes, and gave me a clear timeline on when to expect my money. It pinpointed exactly what was holding up my refund after the CP23 was addressed. Saved me hours of research and anxiety. https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read the transcript! It actually analyzes all the codes and tells you what's happening behind the scenes at the IRS. It explained that after my CP23 situation was resolved, there was another hold they put on my account that I wouldn't have known about. Plus it gave me a clear timeline of when to expect my refund. Best tool I've found in years of dealing with tax headaches.

is it free? or how much does it cost?

Honestly whatever it costs is worth every penny when you're trying to figure out what's going on with thousands of dollars in limbo. I was stressing for months before using it - wish I'd found it sooner!

After getting my CP23 and filing, I was in this frustrating limbo where nothing was happening. I tried calling the IRS for WEEKS but couldn't get through to anyone. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me a callback from an actual IRS agent within a couple hours. The agent was able to confirm they received my return and tell me exactly when my refund would be released. Talking to a real person solved everything that staring at the Where's My Refund tool couldn't. Worth every penny since I was losing my mind waiting.

How does that even work? The IRS phone system is like trying to get tickets to Taylor Swift 🤣

No idea how the tech works tbh, but they somehow get you in the queue and then the IRS calls YOU back. No more sitting on hold for 3 hours only to get disconnected. My refund was released a week after talking to the agent - would've been stuck for who knows how long otherwise.

Another company claiming they can fix the impossible IRS wait times? Sure Jan 🙄

I was skeptical too but I tried it last month when I was desperate. It actually worked - had an agent on the phone within like 2 hours. Expensive but beats the alternative of waiting forever.

Yeah I get the skepticism, I felt the same way! But when you're staring at bills and waiting on thousands of dollars from the IRS, you get desperate. It worked though, and the agent was able to push my refund through after seeing I'd filed the missing return.

I went thru this back in November. After I got the CP23 notice I filed my missing return electronically and they released my refund about 5 weeks later. Just make sure you check your transcript once a week or so because they don't always update the Where's My Refund tool right away.

I got a CP23 for my 2021 taxes and filed in June 2023. It took exactly 18 days for them to process my return and another 9 days to get my refund. So about 4 weeks total. But I've heard it can take longer if they're backed up.

I think I just got lucky with timing tbh. Right before the rush of late summer filers but after they cleared their backlog from tax season.

The CP23 is the worst. I had one last year and it took FOUR MONTHS to get my money even after I filed the missing return. Then they had the audacity to pay me interest on my own money like that makes up for the wait. The IRS is such a joke sometimes.

-

Ava Williams

At least you got interest! They held mine for 6 months and didn't pay a penny extra.

Dmitry Petrov

That's ridiculous! I thought they were required to pay interest after like 45 days or something?

They are but good luck getting them to follow their own rules without hiring a lawyer 🤷‍♀️

Quick question - did your CP23 notice have a specific deadline to file by? Mine gave me 30 days and I'm wondering if submitting before that deadline might speed things up.

0 coins

-

Carmen Ortiz

Yeah my notice said to file within 45 days. I filed the day after I got the notice so I was well within the timeframe. Hoping that helps speed things up!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my experience with this wasn't great. Got my CP23 in March, filed the missing return immediately, and my refund was still held for 3 months. Called every week and got different answers each time. One agent would say "next week" and then next week it was "another 60 days" and then "we don't see any issues but it's still processing." The IRS is basically a black hole.

Facts. I'm thinking of doing the same next year. Who do you use?

Just a local CPA. Costs like $350 but saved me thousands in deductions I would've missed.

Pro tip: If you filed electronically, give it 2 weeks then pull your transcript online. Look for code 971 (notice issued) followed by code 846 (refund issued). The 846 will have the date they're sending your money. If you don't see those codes after 3 weeks, that's when you should start making calls.

0 coins

-

Carmen Ortiz

Thank u for this! I'll check for those codes. Is there a way to set up alerts for when my transcript changes or do I just have to keep checking manually?

0 coins

-

Unfortunately you gotta check manually. The IRS is still living in 1995 technology-wise lol. I usually check every Friday morning.

The amount you owe on the unfiled return actually matters! Since you only owe $375, that's good news. If you had owed thousands, they might take your refund to pay that debt first. But with such a small amount, you'll probably just need to pay that separately and your refund should be released as normal.

I work for a tax firm and we see these all the time. After you file, allow about 3 weeks for processing of the return. Then there's usually a 2 week hold while they do some verification. So generally around 5-6 weeks total before you see your refund. BUT this is tax season now so everything might take a bit longer than usual.

Do you think calling them after the return is processed would help speed things up? Or does that not really make a difference?

In my experience, calling only helps if there's an actual issue or if it's been well beyond the normal timeframe. Otherwise you're just taking up hours of your day to be told "keep waiting" lol

I couldn't understand my CP23 situation so I used taxr.ai to figure it out. It explained EXACTLY what was going on and predicted when my refund would come - it was spot on! Saved me from having to decipher all those confusing transcript codes on my own. If you're struggling to understand what's happening with your refund, give it a try (https://taxr.ai). It analyzed my whole situation in like 30 seconds.

Another day, another miracle tax solution... 🙄 what makes this different from every other tax site out there?

0 coins

-

25d

Oliver Weber

It's completely different from regular tax sites! It doesn't prepare returns - it's specifically for understanding what's happening with your IRS account/transcript. It told me exactly why my refund was held, when each processing step would happen, and gave me the exact date I'd get paid. No more guesswork or trying to Google random IRS codes.

btw if you're wondering why you even got a CP23 in the first place, the IRS is being way more aggressive about unfiled returns. They used to let them slide for years but now they're freezing refunds almost immediately if there are missing returns in your history.

Best way to handle this is to call the IRS directly. But if ur like me and have tried for days with no luck, I used this thing called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got an IRS agent to call me back the same day. The agent was able to confirm my return was received and processed, and even gave me the exact date my refund was scheduled to be released. Honestly the best money I've spent all year considering I was waiting on a $7k refund that was being held.

I swear it's real! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying to call for 2 weeks straight. They somehow get you in the callback queue and then an actual IRS agent calls you. The agent was super helpful and even expedited my refund release since it had been held for so long.

Im still waiting on last years refund 💀 filed electronically, verified identity, called multiple times, and still nothing. Meanwhile they have no problem taking this years tax payment immediately from my account. Make it make sense.

Are you using the "Where's My Refund" tool? It won't show any update until they actually issue your refund. It's better to create an account on irs.gov and check your transcript directly - that will show all the behind-the-scenes stuff happening.

quick tip - make sure you have verified your identity with ID.me or you might hit another delay. The irs won't process anything until they confirm your identity now.

I filed after a CP23 last year and my refund showed up in my bank account 29 days later. The key is submitting electronically - paper returns take FOREVER.

Maybe unrelated but I just dealt with a similar situation. I tried googling every code on my transcript and spent hours on IRS forums trying to figure it out. Was about to give up when I found taxr.ai - it explains everything in plain English and gives you actual dates. Wish I'd known about it sooner instead of playing detective for weeks! https://taxr.ai
