CP05 vs 4464 Letter - What's the real difference? Need help understanding
Been getting mixed signals from IRS about my refund. Got both a CP05 and 4464 letter within weeks of each other. Anyone know the actual difference? Its really confusing and the IRS website isn't helping at all.

Tax pro here. CP05 is an income verification review notice - IRS is double checking your W2s, income sources, etc. The 4464 is specifically about identity verification. They're different processes but can happen simultaneously. CP05 can take 60-120 days, while 4464 needs immediate action to verify your identity.

•omg thank you! So should I wait on the CP05 until after I handle the identity verification?

•Handle the 4464 first! That identity verification needs to be done ASAP or it could further delay everything

Hey everyone, I've been seeing alot of confusion about these letters lately. The best way to actually understand what's going on is using taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what these codes mean for YOUR specific situation. It costs $4.99 but saved me weeks of confusion. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Quick tip: take pictures of both letters and keep ALL correspondence. Trust me on this one.

Had this exact same situation last year! The key thing to remember is that these are two separate review processes that can run parallel. For the 4464, you'll need to verify your identity either online through ID.me or by scheduling an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Don't wait on this one - it has strict deadlines. The CP05 income verification will continue its own timeline regardless. Pro tip: once you complete the identity verification, call the number on your CP05 letter to let them know - sometimes it can speed up the income review process since they'll have confirmation you're legit.

•This is super helpful! Quick question - when you called the CP05 number after completing identity verification, did you notice any actual speedup in processing? Or was it more just for your peace of mind? I'm dealing with both letters right now and trying to figure out if that extra call is worth the inevitable hold time 😅
