What's the difference between CP05 vs 4464C IRS verification letters?
Just got both a CP05 and 4464C letter in the mail. Super confused about what the difference is and which one I should respond to first. Already waited 4 months for my refund and now this happens. Anyone know what these actually mean and what I need to do next?

The CP05 and 4464C are actually different types of verification notices. CP05 means they're reviewing your income, withholding, and tax credits - usually related to EIC, child tax credit, or education credits. The 4464C is letting you know they selected your return for a general review and they need more time. You don't need to do anything for the 4464C unless they ask for more info later. For the CP05, wait for their specific document request before sending anything in.

•Usually 60-120 days but honestly with the backlog rn could be longer 😩

Hey if you want a really clear picture of whats going on and when you'll actually get your refund, check out taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats happening. Its only $1 and WAY better than trying to piece everything together yourself. https://taxr.ai

Bruh I got both of these last year. The 4464C is basically them saying 'we see you' and CP05 is them saying 'we REALLY see you' 😂

Had this happen 2 me last year. Just dont send anything unless they specifically ask for it. I made that mistake and it delayed everything even more ngl

Got the same exact combo of letters last month! The waiting is brutal but definitely don't send anything unless they specifically request documents. I made the mistake of calling the IRS helpline 15 times and they just kept saying "wait for further notice" 🙄 Your refund is still processing, just gotta be patient unfortunately. The system is backed up big time this year.

•Ugh the calling is so pointless! I tried that too and they literally just read the same script every time. At least now I know I'm not alone in this mess. Did you end up getting your refund eventually?

I went through this exact same situation last year! Got both letters within a week of each other and totally panicked. The key thing is DO NOT send anything unless they specifically request documents in writing. I made the mistake of proactively sending bank statements and it actually slowed down my case because they had to match everything up. The CP05 review took about 16 weeks total for me, but once it was done my refund hit my account within 2-3 business days. Hang in there - the waiting sucks but you'll get through it! 💪

•This is super helpful! 16 weeks sounds like forever but at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. I'm definitely not sending anything proactively after reading this - sounds like that just makes things worse. Did you have to do anything special when your refund finally got approved or did it just automatically deposit?

Same boat here! Got my CP05 in December and still waiting. The anxiety is real when you're counting on that refund 😅 One thing that helped me was setting up an IRS online account so I could check my transcript regularly - at least then you can see if there's any movement on your case. The automated phone system (1-800-829-1040) also gives basic status updates without having to wait on hold for hours. Just remember these letters don't mean you did anything wrong, they're just part of their verification process. Stay strong! 🤞

•Thanks for the tips about the online account and phone system! I just set up my IRS account and can see my transcript now - it's actually kind of reassuring to see that things are moving even if slowly. The anxiety is definitely real when you need that money! How often do you check your transcript? I'm worried I'm going to become obsessed with checking it every day 😅
