Anyone with Discover bank getting refund early despite TurboTax issue?

Anyone who TurboTax couldn't do the 5 days early thing for getting their deposit early anyway? WMR shows 3/14 as my deposit date. I bank with Discover, they normally credit 5 days early anyway so idk if that's the issue or something else. Been filing for years but this is my first time with this situation.

This is related to the Refund Transfer Processing Protocol (RTPP) that TurboTax and other tax prep software utilize. When your Direct Deposit Information (DDI) is transmitted through the e-file system, it passes through multiple verification checkpoints before being queued for disbursement. The 5-day acceleration feature is actually a separate arrangement between TurboTax and specific financial institutions, not an IRS function. Your Discover account's standard early deposit feature operates independently of this arrangement.

According to IRS Publication 2043-B, these early deposit arrangements are considered "Refund Anticipation Products" and are subject to different regulations than standard direct deposits. The financial institution may still process your deposit early based on their own policies, regardless of TurboTax's acceleration program limitations.

I've had somewhat similar issues in the past, and I found that it might be helpful to check your transcript for the actual release date, which could possibly be different from what WMR shows. In my experience, the IRS systems sometimes update in different sequences. You might want to try https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript - it helped me understand the actual status of my refund when there seemed to be conflicting information between WMR and what my bank was telling me. It basically translated all the tax codes and gave me a more accurate timeline than what I was seeing on WMR.

I'm with Discover too and had this exact situation last tax season. WMR showed March 15th, but I got my deposit on March 11th - still early but not the full 5 days. The ACH transfer protocols between the Treasury Department and Discover seemed to override whatever TurboTax was trying to do. Honestly, I was impressed with how Discover handled it despite the TurboTax issue.

I've been in this situation before. Here's what worked for me: ā€¢ Check your transcript instead of WMR (more accurate) ā€¢ Look for code 846 which indicates refund issued ā€¢ Don't rely on TurboTax's estimates ā€¢ Be patient - Discover will likely still deposit early If you need definitive answers, try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I used it last year when my deposit date passed with no money. Got through to an IRS agent in 15 minutes who confirmed my bank rejected the deposit due to name mismatch. Saved me weeks of waiting and wondering.

Word of caution here - I had Chime last year with their "get paid early" feature, and TurboTax had a similar issue. Ended up with my refund being sent to a temporary account first, then to me, which actually delayed it by 8 days! šŸ˜© The whole early deposit thing sometimes creates more problems than it solves. Might want to check if your refund is going directly to your Discover account or through some TurboTax holding account first.

FYI - there's actually a diff between the "TT 5-day early" program and your bank's standard early deposit feature. TT partners w/ certain banks for RT (Refund Transfer) products, which is separate from Discover's standard early deposit policy. Your WMR DDD (Direct Deposit Date) of 3/14 is the official IRS date, but Discover will likely still do their thing and release it early regardless of whether TT's special program applies to you.

Is there a way to check if my refund is going through a temporary account first? I've heard about this on the IRS.gov website under "Refund Status" but I'm not sure where exactly to look. Does the WMR tool show this information or would I need to check my transcript?

I had this exact situation with Discover last month. Here's what happened: 1. WMR showed March 1st as my deposit date 2. TurboTax couldn't do their 5-day early thing for me 3. I still got my deposit on February 26th (3 days early) 4. Discover processed it early based on their standard policy Discover's early deposit feature works independently of TurboTax. They see the incoming ACH from the Treasury and process it early as they would with any direct deposit. You'll likely still get your money before the official date, just maybe not the full 5 days early.

Have you checked if your TurboTax fees were taken out of your refund? That's usually what causes this issue. If fees are deducted from your refund, it goes to a temporary account first, which can interfere with early deposit features. Most people here have found that Discover still deposits 2-3 days early in these cases, just not the full 5 days. So relieved when I figured this out last year after panicking about my refund!
