WMR Shows REFUND APPROVED with DD Date - What About TurboTax Early Access?

Just checked my WMR status and finally got the REFUND APPROVED notification with a DD date of 2/24. First time filing as MFJ and the process has been slower than I expected. Here's my question - I opted for the TurboTax '5 day early' deposit feature when I filed. Does anyone know if this means I'll actually get the deposit before the weekend hits? The IRS direct deposit date is 2/24 but I'm trying to figure out if TurboTax's early access means I'll see it sooner. Need to plan some payments and this timing matters.

I went through this exact situation last month. The TurboTax 'early access' feature is actually a bit misleading. What happens is TurboTax partners with a bank that *might* front you the money when they see the IRS payment pending. In my case, I got the WMR approved message with a DD date of 1/28, but the deposit hit my account on 1/26 - so only 2 days early, not 5. The 'up to 5 days' is the key language they use to protect themselves.

Did TurboTax notify you when they released the funds early or did it just show up in your account?

This is exactly right. I've used the TT early deposit thing for 3 yrs now and nvr got it 5 days early. Usually 2-3 days max. And they don't always send notifications either, just randomly appears in ur acct.

Thank you for explaining this! I've been wondering how this works. Do you know if there's a way to track when they actually release the funds, or do we just have to keep checking our bank accounts?

Have you actually read the fine print on that TurboTax agreement? The '5 day early' feature isn't guaranteed at all - it's 'up to' 5 days. And did you consider whether your bank holds deposits? Some banks won't release funds until the actual date even if they receive them early. Or what if the deposit arrives on a Friday? Many financial institutions don't process weekend transactions until Monday. The system has more variables than most people realize.

I was in this EXACT situation last week and needed my refund ASAP for a car repair! The TurboTax early deposit was only 2 days early for me. When I called the IRS to see if they could expedite it (lol, I know), I spent 3 hours on hold before giving up. Then I tried Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) and got through to an IRS agent in like 15 mins who confirmed my deposit was already scheduled and couldn't be changed. Saved me from wasting a whole day on hold! At least I knew for sure when to expect it.

The IRS ACH transfer protocol initiates 24-48 hours before the official DD date in most cases. TurboTax's Refund Advance service operates through their banking partner (typically Green Dot Bank) which receives the ACH notification and can choose to front the funds. Their internal risk algorithm determines whether you get it 1, 2, 3, 4, or the full 5 days early based on various factors including deposit amount, your history with them, and overall system liquidity at the time of processing.

This is not entirely accurate. I worked at a tax prep company until January 2024, and the early deposit timing depends more on when the IRS releases the ACH file rather than an 'algorithm.' The IRS typically transmits refund data on Wednesdays for Friday deposits, but can vary during peak season (like now). The banking partner simply passes it through when received, minus their processing time.

Is there any way to check with Green Dot directly about the status? I'm wondering if they have their own tracking system separate from the IRS Where's My Refund tool?

TurboTax early access isn't guaranteed for 5 days. It's up to 5 days. Usually 2-3 days early. Depends on when IRS sends the ACH. Weekends complicate things. Banks don't process on weekends. Your 2/24 date is a Saturday. You'll likely see it Thursday or Friday. Could be Monday if your bank holds weekend deposits. Check your bank's deposit policies. That matters more than TurboTax's promise.

This matches what I've seen with other tax services too. I've used both H&R Block and TaxAct in previous years with similar early deposit features, and it's never been the full advertised time. It seems like the tax prep companies all use similar banking partners with comparable timeframes. In my experience with a credit union, deposits that arrive on Friday or Saturday typically show up Monday morning, though some larger banks might process weekend deposits.

Think of the TurboTax early deposit feature like a weather forecast that predicts rain. They say there's a chance of rain (early deposit) but can't guarantee exactly when or how much. I made the mistake of counting on mine last year for a time-sensitive payment. Even though WMR showed approval with a Thursday date, the money didn't hit until Wednesday - just one day early. Had to scramble to cover a mortgage payment. Better to plan as if you'll get it on the actual IRS date and be pleasantly surprised if it comes earlier.

OMG the stress of waiting for tax refunds is THE WORST! 😫 I've used the TurboTax early deposit feature for three years straight now. First year: got it 4 days early (amazing!). Second year: only 1 day early (disappointing). This year: 3 days early. There's absolutely no consistency! The community wisdom here is don't make firm plans based on getting it early. The IRS date is the only somewhat reliable date. Anything earlier is just a bonus!
