Anyone with Discover Debit card get their tax refund early? What time did deposits hit?
I've got a DDD (direct deposit date) for next Tuesday but wondering if Discover might come through early. Called them today and they don't see anything pending in their system yet. Anyone here bank with Discover debit and get your refund before the actual DDD? And what time of day did it hit your account? Transcript says refund approved last week, just playing the waiting game now.

I've been using Discover for my tax refunds for the past few years. They typically deposit 1-2 days before the DDD, but not always. Last year mine hit at around 3am the day before my scheduled date. The IRS releases the funds in batches, and then it depends on how quickly your bank processes it. If your DDD is for Tuesday, I'd start checking obsessively Sunday night through Monday night 😂

•thanks for the info! do they usually send you any kind of notification when it posts or do you just have to keep checking?

•I get push notifications for all deposits, but somtimes they're delayed by an hour or so. I'm a psycho who checks constantly anyway lol

I had this exact same issue trying to understand when my tax refund would hit. The guessing game was driving me crazy, so I started using taxr.ai to actually read my transcript and tell me exactly what was happening. It showed me all my codes and told me the exact timeline of when everything would process. Much better than trying to figure it out from vague IRS info or random reddit posts. Basically translates all the IRS jargon into plain english. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It analyzes your entire transcript and explains every code and date in plain english. Also shows you where you are in the refund process and what to expect next. WAY better than just trying to guess what all those random codes mean!

•Just tried it and WOW!!! This is what I've been looking for all tax season! Finally understand what's actually happening with my return. Everyone should be using this taxr.ai thing instead of making wild guesses about their refund timing.

After waiting FOREVER to get my refund and discover saying they didn't see anything pending, I was going crazy trying to get answers from the IRS. I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual IRS agent on the phone. The agent confirmed my refund was being processed and gave me the exact release date - which was actually a day earlier than my transcript showed! Totally worth it to actually talk to someone instead of staring at the Where's My Refund tool for weeks.

•wait is this for real? I've been trying to get thru to the IRS for like 3 weeks. how does it work?

•they basically call the IRS for you and then connect you when they get through. I was SUPER skeptical but it worked. Got connected in like 20 mins when I had spent HOURS trying on my own.

•I thought the same thing at first but after spending 4 hours on hold one day and getting disconnected, I was desperate. It's the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered. The agent I spoke with was able to release my refund that had been stuck in processing.

I have Discover and my refund hit at exactly midnight the day of my DDD. Not early at all. But my friend with Chase got hers 2 days early, so I think it really depends on the bank and maybe even how busy they are that week.

The whole early deposit thing is so unpredictable. I've used Discover for 3 years now. First year - 2 days early. Second year - on exact DDD. This year - 1 day early. I think it depends on what day of the week your DDD falls on, how backed up the IRS is, and probably some other factors nobody knows about. The IRS is a friggin mystery wrapped in a riddle LOL

•This 👆 I've literally never had a consistent experience with tax refund timing. One time it even came AFTER the DDD date which nearly gave me a heart attack.

•omg yes! The worst is when it says refund approved but then nothing happens for days. my anxiety cant handle it 🙃

Pro tip: don't drive yourself crazy checking your account every 5 minutes. Set up alerts for deposits over $1 and just go about your life. It'll come when it comes. I learned this the hard way after refreshing my discover app like 300 times a day during tax season last year 😅

•This is good advice but I know I won't follow it lol. Already checked 4 times today and it's only 9am

There's no universal answer to this. The IRS sends refunds in batches throughout the day, and then each financial institution processes them according to their own schedule. Discover typically processes ACH transfers at 3AM, 9AM, 12PM, 3PM, 6PM, and 9PM Eastern time, but that can vary. What's your cycle code on your transcript? If it ends in 01, 05, or 05, you're more likely to see an early deposit. If Discover doesn't show anything pending yet, I'd check again Monday morning. Also, make sure your Discover account number on your tax return is correct, including any leading zeroes. A mismatch would cause the deposit to be rejected and a paper check to be mailed instead.

•This is really detailed info, thx! My cycle code ends in 05. How do you know all this stuff about the batches? Is there somewhere I can read more?

•Years of working with tax issues and way too much time on r/IRS 😂 The batch info comes from patterns observed over many tax seasons, but the IRS doesn't officially publish their exact schedule. Cycle code 05 is typically a weekly processing cycle, so that's actually a good sign for you getting it close to your DDD.

I gotta say, the transcripts are absolutely impossible to understand. I spent hours trying to decipher mine and ended up more confused. Finally used taxr.ai after seeing another redditor recommend it, and it translated everything perfectly. Told me exactly when my deposit was scheduled and explained all the weird code numbers. Wish I'd found it sooner! https://taxr.ai

Just a friendly reminder to anyone reading - do NOT rely on getting your refund early. Banks are unpredictable, the IRS is unpredictable. I know it feels like forever waiting, but don't count that money in your budget until you see it hit your account!

I couldnt get ANYONE at the IRS to answer my questions about my refund. Tried for weeks. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to talk to someone. The agent saw there was a hold on my account that wasn't showing on my transcript. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after it had been stuck for like 2 months!

I work in a tax office and I can tell you that nearly all financial institutions are capable of releasing funds early, but their policies vary. If your DDD is on a Tuesday, and Monday is a business day, there's a decent chance you'll see it Monday. But I've seen Discover be all over the map - sometimes early, sometimes right on the DDD.

Not Discover, but I have Chime and I got mine 5 days before my DDD this year! Year before was only 2 days early. I think the early deposit thing is pure luck honestly.

check your transcript for cycle code and processing date...thats the real indicator, not what bank you have

•I've tried looking at my transcript but it's confusing af. what part should I be looking at specifically?

•Look for the code 846 - that's the refund issued code. next to it will be a date which is your official DDD. The cycle code is that weird number at the top like 20232605 or whatever. Last two digits tell you if you're weekly or daily processing.

THE IRS IS A JOKE!!! 4 months waiting for my refund and they can't even tell us exactly when the money will hit our accounts? In what world is this acceptable? Any other business would be out of business if they operated like this.

Try the IRS2Go app! I find it easier to use than the website and it sometimes updates more frequently. Won't tell you exactly when Discover will post it, but at least you'll know where the IRS is in the process.

I'm in the exact same situation with Discover! My DDD is also next Tuesday and I've been obsessively checking my account. From what I've gathered reading through all these comments, it seems like Discover is pretty inconsistent - some people get it 1-2 days early, others right on the DDD. The fact that they don't see anything pending yet isn't necessarily bad news since the IRS releases funds in batches. I'm planning to start checking Sunday night just in case, but trying not to get my hopes up too much. This waiting game is torture! 😅

•Same here! The anticipation is killing me. I've been refreshing my Discover app way too many times already today. From what everyone's saying, it sounds like Tuesday DDDs have a decent chance of hitting Monday, but there's really no way to know for sure. At least we're all in this together! Maybe we should start a support group for people obsessively checking their bank accounts during tax season 😂
