Anyone used Chime/Column Tax instead of TurboTax? Need reviews before switching
Getting ready to file and thinking about switching from TurboTax to either Chime or Column Tax this year. TurboTax was a nightmare last year and im looking for something different. Anyone have experience with either of these? How long did it take to get your refund?

Tax pro here - both are legitimate services, but make sure you understand what you're getting. Chime's tax service is actually powered by Column Tax. They're newer players but have good security. The main difference from TurboTax is the interface and pricing structure.

ā¢Thanks! Did you notice any difference in processing time between these and turbotax?

ā¢Processing time is basically the same - its all about how quickly the IRS moves, not which service you use tbh

Hey everyone! I see alot of questions about processing times and refund status. The best way to actually track this is using taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats going on with your refund. Its $4.99 but totally worth it. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

ā¢Its scary accurate! It looks at all your transcript codes and tells you exactly whats happening and when to expect your money. Way better than the where's my refund tool

My refund on turbo tax is more than my refund on chime/column Anyone know why that is? I double checked and made sure I put in all the same info and docs

ā¢That's weird! Could be a difference in how they calculate deductions or handle certain tax situations. Maybe one is missing a form or credit that the other caught? I'd double check that both are importing all your W-2s and 1099s correctly

ā¢@Connor Gallagher is right - definitely check that both are pulling in all your forms correctly. Also make sure you re'claiming the same filing status and dependents on both. Sometimes different software handles things like the earned income credit or child tax credit slightly differently too. You might want to go line by line on the 1040 comparison to see exactly where the difference is coming from.

ā¢Also worth checking if one software is applying different tax law interpretations or if there are any fees being deducted automatically from your refund that might make it appear smaller. Sometimes the "refund amount" shown includes or excludes filing fees depending on the platform. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples!

I've been using Column Tax for the past two years and honestly it's been solid. Way cheaper than TurboTax and the interface is super clean. Last year I got my refund in about 10 days with direct deposit. The only downside is if you have really complex tax situations (like multiple rental properties or business income), you might want to stick with something more robust. But for standard W-2 + basic deductions it's perfect!

ā¢That's really helpful @Finnegan Gunn! 10 days is way faster than what I got with TurboTax last year. I'm just doing W-2 and standard deduction so sounds like Column might be perfect. Did you have any issues with customer support if you needed help, or was the process pretty self-explanatory?

I actually switched from TurboTax to Column Tax this year and it was honestly a game changer! The whole process was so much smoother and way less expensive. I filed about 3 weeks ago and got my refund in 8 days with direct deposit. The interface is super intuitive - took me maybe 30 minutes total compared to the hours I used to spend fighting with TurboTax's upselling nonsense. Only thing is make sure you have all your docs ready because unlike TurboTax it doesn't hold your hand as much, but that's honestly a good thing imo. Definitely recommend making the switch!

ā¢This is exactly what I needed to hear! The upselling from TurboTax was driving me crazy last year - felt like every screen was trying to get me to upgrade to some premium version I didn't need. 8 days for your refund is amazing too! Did you notice any difference in the accuracy or did Column catch all the same deductions that TurboTax would have found? I'm pretty straightforward tax-wise but want to make sure I'm not leaving money on the table by switching.

ā¢@GalacticGuru that's such a relief to hear! I'm definitely leaning towards Column now. Quick question - when you say it doesn't hold your hand as much, do you mean it's less guided through the deduction process? Like does it still ask you the standard questions about charitable donations, student loan interest, that kind of stuff? I'm worried I might miss something obvious since I'm not super tax-savvy.

ā¢@GalacticGuru Yes it still asks all the standard deduction questions! It walks you through charitable donations, student loan interest, medical expenses, all that stuff. When I say it doesn't hold your hand I mean it doesn't have those annoying popup explanations for every single field or try to upsell you on "audit protection" every other screen lol. It's actually more streamlined - asks what it needs to ask and moves on. I actually caught a deduction I missed the year before with TurboTax (home office expenses) so the accuracy is definitely there. You won't miss anything obvious, promise!

I made the switch from TurboTax to Column Tax this year and honestly wish I'd done it sooner! Filed about 2 weeks ago and just got my refund yesterday - super quick turnaround. The whole process was way less stressful than dealing with TurboTax's constant upselling. Column's interface is clean and straightforward, plus it's significantly cheaper. For basic returns like mine (W-2, standard deduction, some student loan interest) it handled everything perfectly. The only thing I'd recommend is having all your documents organized beforehand since it moves through the process pretty efficiently. Overall really happy with the switch!

ā¢@Paolo Moretti That s'awesome to hear! I m'definitely convinced to make the switch now. Two weeks turnaround is exactly what I m'hoping for. Quick question - did you have to manually input all your tax info or does Column Tax import from previous years/other software like TurboTax does? I m'wondering if I ll'need to dig up all my old documents or if there s'an easier way to transfer everything over from my TurboTax account.

ā¢@Paolo Moretti @Ben Cooper From what I ve experienced,'Column Tax can import some basic info from previous years if you upload your prior year return PDF , (but)it s not'as seamless as TurboTax s year-to-year'transfer. You ll likely'need to manually input your current year documents like W-2s and 1099s, but honestly it only takes a few extra minutes and the interface makes it pretty painless. I d recommend'gathering your docs beforehand - W-2s, any 1099s, student loan interest statements, etc. The trade-off of a few minutes of manual entry for the cost savings and better experience is totally worth it imo!

I actually just switched from TurboTax to Column Tax this year after dealing with their ridiculous price increases and constant upselling. Filed 3 days ago and the whole experience was so much smoother! The interface is way cleaner and more intuitive - no annoying popups trying to get me to upgrade every 5 seconds. Cost me like $25 compared to the $120 TurboTax wanted for basically the same service. Still waiting on my refund but based on what everyone's saying here, sounds like I should expect it pretty soon. Honestly kicking myself for not making this switch years ago. The only thing is you do need to be a bit more organized with your documents since it doesn't hold your hand as much, but that's honestly refreshing after TurboTax's hand-holding turned into aggressive upselling lol
