Anyone still waiting on trace number with DDD of 4/16?

Filed early March. Got accepted right away. Refund approved with DDD of 4/16. Still no deposit. Checked my transcript. Shows refund issued. Called bank. Nothing pending. Need this for medical bills. Anyone else?

This happens more often than you'd think! The 'trace number' is basically the IRS's receipt that they sent your money. When a direct deposit doesn't land as scheduled, there's usually a hiccup between the Treasury and your bank. Could be an account number typo or a bank verification issue. Give it 5 business days after your DDD before getting too worried - banks sometimes hold these deposits for verification. 😅

To clarify what happens with these delayed deposits: Step 1: IRS approves your refund and assigns a Direct Deposit Date Step 2: Treasury Department initiates the transfer on that date Step 3: ACH network processes the payment (1-2 business days) Step 4: Your bank receives and posts the deposit The delay typically happens between steps 2-4. If it's been more than 5 business days since your DDD, you should request a trace.

I was in the exact same situation last year - DDD showed up but no money for over a week. Compared to my previous refunds, this was unusual. I tried calling the IRS regular number and spent 3 hours on hold before getting disconnected. Eventually used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They initiated a trace and found my deposit had been rejected by my bank due to a name mismatch. Much better than waiting weeks wondering what happened.

Hmm, not sure about paying for something that should be free tbh. Couldn't you just keep calling the IRS yourself? Their website says to wait 5 days after your DDD before even worrying. Seems like an unnecessary expense when patience might solve the prob...

I was skeptical too until I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through on my own. Called at opening time, during lunch, right before closing... nothing worked. Finally used Claimyr on April 2nd when my March 19th refund still hadn't shown up. The agent confirmed my bank had rejected the deposit because my married name was on the return but my maiden name was still on the account. They reissued a paper check that day. Worth every penny for my peace of mind!

What bank do you use? Have you checked if your routing/account numbers on the return match your actual account? Is your name exactly the same on both?

I had exactly this issue with my refund that had a DDD of April 3rd. After waiting 7 days with no deposit, I uploaded my transcript to taxr.ai and it identified a specific code (846 followed by 971) that indicated my direct deposit was rejected. The tool explained this meant a paper check would be issued within 14 days. Without understanding those transcript codes, I would have been waiting for a direct deposit that wasn't coming. My paper check arrived exactly 12 days later.

Have you verified that your bank account information on the return is accurate? According to IRS Publication 5344, if there's a mismatch between your tax return and bank records, the deposit will be rejected and automatically converted to a paper check. This typically adds 2-3 weeks to the refund timeline.

BE CAREFUL about calling too early! I had a DDD of March 22nd and called on March 25th. The rep told me I needed to wait a FULL 21 days after my DDD before they could help. I called back on April 12th and they told me my direct deposit had been rejected on March 23rd and they had already mailed a paper check on April 5th. Wasted almost 3 weeks because I didn't know the system!

I think most people don't realize that the DDD is just when the IRS *sends* the money, not necessarily when you'll *receive* it. Your bank might possibly hold it for a day or two, especially if it's a larger amount or if there's maybe some kind of verification flag. I was worried about my refund too, but it showed up eventually, just a little later than expected.

My DDD was 4/9 and I just got my refund yesterday. It's like watching a package get stuck in shipping - the IRS says they sent it, the bank says they don't have it, and your money is just floating in limbo somewhere. I needed that money for rent ASAP. Called my bank daily until they finally told me there was a hold on it for "verification" that nobody bothered to tell me about.

Back in 2022, I had this exact issue. My transcript showed a refund issued but nothing in my account for 2 weeks. Turned out my bank had merged with another bank and although my routing number was still technically valid, there was some backend issue with how they were processing government deposits. The money eventually appeared, but I learned to always double-check my banking info before filing.

Just to clarify something important - a trace request can't be initiated until 5 business days after your DDD for direct deposits. For paper checks, you need to wait 4 weeks. If you call before these timeframes, they'll just tell you to wait.
