This happened to me last month. The hold was because I claimed Child Tax Credit and they were just verifying my kids' info. The letter just asked me to confirm some information. I sent it back right away and got my refund about 2 weeks later. It's annoying but at least they're processing them eventually.
Same boat here. Filed January 20th, accepted same day, and got the same call about a hold. My letter arrived yesterday (took 16 days, not the 14 they promised š). It's asking me to verify my identity through ID.me or by calling them. Hoping this speeds things up because I need this money for car repairs.
Will do! The agent I spoke with said it should be about 9 business days after verification, but we'll see if they actually stick to that timeline.
I waited 9 weeks last year, and when I finally got through to the IRS, they just told me it was "in process" and to keep waiting. This year I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent after waiting 5 weeks. Got connected in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening and when to expect my refund. Worth every penny to not sit on hold for 3+ hours.
I might try that if nothing changes by next week. Getting really frustrated with the wait and no information.
Have you checked your account transcript on the IRS website? Sometimes that will show pending refund info even when WMR doesn't update. Look for an 846 code with a date - that's your refund date.
I tried but can't seem to access my transcript online. Says something about not being able to verify my identity. Might have to request it by mail which takes even longer š¤¦āāļø
Did you receive any kind of confirmation email from SBTPG with details? And have you checked if there might be any fees they deducted that could be causing a difference in the amount? Sometimes banks will reject deposits if the amount doesn't match exactly what was expected.
I waited from March 15th to March 23rd last year with the exact same situation. SBTPG said sent, nothing in my Chime. When I finally got through to the IRS, they told me SBTPG had returned the money because of a "name mismatch" - but nobody bothered to tell me! Had to wait another 6 weeks for a paper check. Don't wait as long as I did to start investigating - every day matters when it's your money.
I remember last year when I used H&R Block, they had a similar verification process that confused me. From what I've gathered from tax forums, these extra verification steps are actually beneficial - they're checking for common errors that trigger IRS reviews. In my previous experience, the returns that went through these extra checks actually processed faster because they had fewer issues when they reached the IRS. Have you tried checking your tax transcript directly from the IRS website? That might give you more insight than WMR.
According to the TurboTax support forum at https://ttlc.intuit.com/, this is a known issue with the 2024 software. It's related to their enhanced error-checking algorithm. The forum suggests this happens most often with returns claiming certain credits or with self-employment income. It doesn't cause delays by itself, but it might be flagging something in your return that could cause a delay. Check out the IRS processing issues page at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations for current known processing delays.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt! š When this happened to me last year, I spent 3 days trying to get through to the IRS on their regular line. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in like 15 minutes. They explained it's just a display issue in their system and nothing to worry about. Apparently it happens more often with certain tax prep software - Credit Karma being one of them. Saved me from going gray over nothing!

Have you considered that this might actually be by design? The IRS has been modernizing their systems gradually, and perhaps they're streamlining some of the tracking elements that aren't essential for taxpayers. As long as you have your deposit confirmation from your bank and the refund amount matches what you expected, isn't that what really matters? You could always request a wage and income transcript as additional documentation if you're concerned about record-keeping.
